The skull and bones cutie mark was a bit of a shocker... As for a Zebra's "cutie mark", it could easily be a tribal tatoo or brew ritual. Never seen a mark on Saddle Arabians either. The Brony Notion comes up with quite interesting CM Theories.
Right now, I'm trying to decide which episode deserves the title of best of the season: This or No Second Prances. I will say that this is definitely the second best CMC episode of the entire series. Gabby is the best Griffon we've had so far, and the best character introduced this season. As for the song, while I don't think it's as good as Say Goodbye to the Holiday, it IS one of the best of the season.
Definitely a good song, didn't quite stand out like some others have though. Nothing wrong with it, just doesn't have as much emotional punch as some. But yeah, this is the best CMC episode this season, and in the top 5 of the entire series for me.

well after the recent friendship summit in Griffinstone, that's why twilight was missing the daring do convention (stranger than fan fiction), I would like to see more of the Griffin culture to see if the friendship summit had any affect on the griffins.
Gabby stole my heart in this episode 💖 I can't help but have Gabby as a role model. She alone, as you said, represents all the elements of harmony: laugh: she may not be a comedian who throws parties and jokes like Pinkie, but her energy and optimism certainly brings smiles. honesty: she couldn't keep up a lie that was when she got the cutie mark, it was discovered soon after. loyalty: she cared not to disappoint the CMC and painted herself a cutie mark for them to feel fulfilled, in addition to giving her best to achieve something that seemed impossible to help her original people generosity: giving your time to others to help and understand them is an act of generosity in itself. kindness: well, it's self-explanatory, she feels good helping others. magic: hmmm... how does that specific element work?? It's the most elusive in my opinion, I don't know if she has it, maybe it's the only one that doesn't?? in any case, Gabby is great!
Pirates were already confirmed, remember Pipsquek? First time he was indroduced during Nightmare Night? He had a pirate costume, all the way back then. Additional note: Notice how all griffins so far have name that starts with G?
I thought of that, but Pipsqueak was only wearing a costume, and we've seen many costumes in the Nightmare Night episodes based on things that shouldn't exist in this world, like the space suit Rainbow Dash was wearing. As costumes though, they could have been based on works of fiction. The fact that the parents thought their daughter might actually become a real pirate suggests that there ARE (or at least were) real pirates somewhere in this world. I know, it's nitpicking at details, but that's my reasoning in a nutshell.
Applegeek Well, you never know. Maybe there used to be pirates or the parents were so into fiction that they were blinded by it. I suppose if they read Daring Do, they would have gotten the right idea right away.
I've gotten emotional over episodes but have never been brought to tears. This one almost made me tear up. It was So BEAUTIFUL!!! If Gabby and I were ponies, we'd have the same cutie mark.

When I first watched this episode I was amazed how much Gabby believed in the Cutie Mark Crusaders even though she was trying to do something that's physically impossible

Yeah that intro gag was gold ^^ Love how you called that they can still find Gabby's purpose! Hahaha thumbs up twice for that! I love how the CMCS go from "WHat kind of stranger is this?" to becoming legit good friends with Gabby btw. Scootaloo was gold in this episode.
This was an adorable episode; while it didn't have as many laughs I love the lesson that it gave, plus Gabby is super adorable! Like oh my gosh! Also the moment where Scootaloo brings up the fact that she wants to fly but can't, that just broke my heart right there. The fact that they brought it up again just made me teary eyed. Great reaction and can't wait for more! XD.
I guess that part didn't really hit me emotionally, as it was more just a passing comment than it was an item of focus. I had originally thought that this might be the episode that focuses directly on Scootaloo's handicap, but it ended up going a whole different direction with Gabby. Still need a Scootaloo-focused episode, but I was glad to see her take charge in this one, big step up for her.
Applegeek Scootaloo is my favorite out of the CMC, I can relate to her so much. I have a back disorder called Scoliosis and had to have a ton of back surgeries until 2008; not pleasant in the slightest let me tell you. so I can relate to characters like Scootaloo a lot. So her bringing that up, just as a passing comment for even a brief moment shocked me into getting teary eyed the first time I watched this episode. (Just because I wasn't expecting her to bring that up). But I can understand why others wouldn't get teary eyed at the moment, it was just a one time thing; just because I was so shocked by her bringing that up like that. Yeah Scootaloo needs to have another episode the Sleepless in Ponyville and the Flight to the Finish (although that episode is more CMC with Scootaloo struggling to accept her limitation on the side); either way she definitely needs more episodes. (Introduction to any of her family members would be nice as well).
Sorry to hear about your condition. I'm sure there's many people in the fandom who find her relatable for a similar reason. I personally want desperately for her to be able to fly, but at the same time I recognize that she represents a lot of people who are disabled in some way. I just wish that whatever direction they decide to go, that they'd address it head-on at some point and not leave us constantly guessing as to what's really going on with her inability to fly, or as to what her family situation is.
Applegeek Thank you, but you know what they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Thankfully I haven't needed a back surgery since 2008; so it's all good. And yeah Scootaloo definitely represents people who are disabled in some way. I honestly think that they did address it in Flight to the finish when she couldn't fly; I think that was them saying Scootaloo can't fly without actually saying it, and then the comment she made in this episode basically confirmed that she will never be able to fly. (Which is sad for her, but good for people/kids who have a disability, that way they can relate to her; at least on some level).
She's my favorite CMC too for somewhat similar reasons. Back in 2008 i had a slightly botched stromech surgery that caused both of my legs to get blood clots at the same time. I went into the hospital and nearly died as a result of the complication. As a result from this problem, both of my legs have swelling issues and the left one in particular is quite annoying and inhibits me from walking correctly. I still lost a ton of weight so far but the leg problem remains unfortunately. If an episode ever gets made that is centered around Scootaloo coming to terms with her disability and rising above her problem instead of letting it take control of her life, there will be some serious tears during my reaction and it very well may be my most favorite episode in the series if done right. COTLM was feelsy and left me liquid pride, my reaction to that future episode would be full on sobbing. Thanks for sharing and i hope things are doing better for you nowadays.
Another feel-good episode to add to the list. =) It warms my heart knowing what a positive impact the Crusaders have left on Ponyville with their efforts. As for Gabby, she is just so adorable and endearing! She really is the Pinkie Pie of Griffonstone, and I hope she never loses that chipper attitude. Scootaloo really wowed me in this one, as she seemed to be the one taking the most charge with helping Gabby. I think this is the closest the show's ever come to confirming that she might really be disabled, and I was surprised and impressed with how mature she was. I only have two minor regrets with this episode, though the first is contestable. First, I feel like Diamond Tiara should have had a slightly bigger cameo than popping up in the background in the beginning. Helping her reassess her destiny was what led to the Crusaders getting their marks in the first place, and she's always had a big impact on their lives, for better or worse. Second, I don't wanna imagine Twi's disappointment when she realizes griffons don't really earn cutie marks, and that Gabby was just faking. Ah well. Still an excellent episode and another excellent reaction! =)
I empathize with you in regards to Diamond Tiara, but honestly I'd rather see her be a main focus character in another episode rather than have her be a distraction in an episode like this. Background characters and cameos are fun, but they can be distracting as well if not done right.
The funny thing about this episode is that in the midst of the CMC trying to help Gabby find her purpose in life, I made a random wild card of a prediction that she would become an honorary member of the CMC and low and behold; my prediction actually came true! I know that Gabby's personality stands out from most griffons but, I can't help but wonder how Griffonstone is fairing at the time after that friendship summit that Twilight and Celestia attended; including Gilda's task in making friends with her kind?
Yeah, I really wish we had gotten to see a bit of what's going on there, but like I said, given Gabby still hoping for a cutie mark in order to be able to effect big changes, I'm guessing it's been slow going. A society like that doesn't change quickly, or easily.
Have you heard of kisscartoon? It has a ton of free cartoons and its sister site kissanime has a lot of anime (if you're interested in that). Kisscartoon normally updates the day that the episode is aired and it's free, don't have to sign up or anything. XD.
I did that to for awhile. But its not the best way to see them. I stopped because I'm not sure if all of them are safe to see I think one of the scooby doo ones gave my computer a virius. (But thats also a risk on websites and TH-cam as well) I also don't know if they got them legally. I like the reactions better as long as their well done like this. Even despite the annoying changes TH-cam is still pretty great. Sometimes they have parts to episodes or full b movies that or its copyright ran out or TH-cam doesn't notice it is thier yet.

Technically Zebras, Horses, and Donkeys are all members of the Equine family so it's not really a stretch for them to all be considered ponies here although for some reason donkeys don't get cutie marks

I gotta say i really enjoyed this episode actually it was really good. I really like the way scoots has really accepted her disability it really gives me a positive feeling inside. Her positive outlook on life is really wonderful i really like that. Makes me look at positive side of things even more.
true i can agree with ya there id like to see more mane chars as well as some fan fave background chars have a real good song. such as spikes song it was so very well done and it covered lotsa ponys in r/l discrimination proving that just cause of the sins of one or the sins of many it doesnt mean all of those ones are bad. i want to see more char develop like for celestia and luna trixie starlight glimmer. etc.
It's always fun to meet somebody like that. I wish I could be that positive all the time, but I struggle a lot with cynicism and negativity. This show helps remind me to think positively.
I can't belive I'm saying this but I actually would like to see Chrysi return. It would be neat. I'd like to see them dive deep into her back story the Bronys community has me really wondering with the theory. Was Chrysi really a pony at one time. It would be nice to know. Ya know. What made her go bad what made her hate love only to see it as food. And Thorax is he the only changling that is good or are the other just like him but scared to go against the queen. I'm also wanting to see him like be come Uncle Thorax to Flurry. Or maybe like a big brother. That would make for an interesting tail as well.

Interesting perspective on the title, Applegeek. When I first saw the episode title, it made me think that the CMC's themselves had cutie mark problems (even though they sort of addressed that in 'On Your Marks'), or that there was something flawed about their cutie marks.
I originally thought, based on the title, that the episode was going to be about them exploring the meaning of the unique symbols in their cutie marks, with a strong focus on Scootaloo's. Since that didn't happen, I was struggling to figure out the meaning of the title. Not sure if I got what the writers intended or not.

Hmm, good point about more things we share in common with griffons, unfortunately. XD Regarding the title, I was struggling to identify the meaning of it, given the episode. I actually expected something completely different. Back when I first heard about this episode title, I thought that this would be focused heavily on Scootaloo as she tried to figure out the meaning of the wing and lightning bolt insignia on her cutie mark, and that the title would be referencing the fact that she thought there was a fault with it because it didn't accurately represent her due to her handicap. Lacking that, I struggled to see where the fault was with any cutie marks in this episode, and the misunderstanding about what the mark is about is the only thing I could come up with, so I hope it's right.

I think in this case, it was intended to be obvious what she was good at so that instead of the focus of the story being finding out what she's good at, it would instead be the realization that she was already fulfilling her purpose, and didn't need a cutie mark to tell her that.

This was a cute and adorable episode. I initially thought it was gonna be about the Cutie Mark Crusaders exploring the more individual aspects of their cutie marks (feather in lightning bolt, note in star, apple heart) and I thought it was gonna be a heavy episode dealing with Scootaloo's handicap (the FAULT in our cutie marks), but even though it wasn't as huge I was expecting it to be but still good. I am glad they referenced it again though in the episode. I think all equine creatures can get cutie marks, like zebras (Zecora) and horses (but donkeys (Cranky + Matilda) & mules (Mulia) don't evidently?). I am glad they didn't give Gabby a cutie mark because I think that would have hampered the message about one can still have a purpose that is not confined to a specific occupation. Her being an honorary crusader I felt was a satisfying ending. And I loved Gabby. She's a great character and parallel to the more familiar behaviors of the other griffons. She's a very endearing character and her caring and bubbly personality is infectious. I definitely related with the profound desire to help and bring joy to others. Your entire first paragraph is pretty much EXACTLY what I thought this episode was going to be about, until Gabby entered the picture. Due to how it went with Gabby, I struggled to understand the meaning of the title for this one, not sure if I got out of it what the writers intended or not.
Yeah, I agree. The title was misleading in a way when you think about the fact that its based on The Fault in Our Stars, which is why I thought it would deal with Scootaloo's inability to fly. Not to mention the fact that they pushed the episode back to later in the season. But hopefully they will address it in Season 7.

As for a Zebra's "cutie mark", it could easily be a tribal tatoo or brew ritual. Never seen a mark on Saddle Arabians either. The Brony Notion comes up with quite interesting CM Theories.
Right now, I'm trying to decide which episode deserves the title of best of the season: This or No Second Prances.
I will say that this is definitely the second best CMC episode of the entire series.
Gabby is the best Griffon we've had so far, and the best character introduced this season.
As for the song, while I don't think it's as good as Say Goodbye to the Holiday, it IS one of the best of the season.
Definitely a good song, didn't quite stand out like some others have though. Nothing wrong with it, just doesn't have as much emotional punch as some. But yeah, this is the best CMC episode this season, and in the top 5 of the entire series for me.

I can't help but have Gabby as a role model.
She alone, as you said, represents all the elements of harmony:
laugh: she may not be a comedian who throws parties and jokes like Pinkie, but her energy and optimism certainly brings smiles.
honesty: she couldn't keep up a lie that was when she got the cutie mark, it was discovered soon after.
loyalty: she cared not to disappoint the CMC and painted herself a cutie mark for them to feel fulfilled, in addition to giving her best to achieve something that seemed impossible to help her original people
generosity: giving your time to others to help and understand them is an act of generosity in itself.
kindness: well, it's self-explanatory, she feels good helping others.
magic: hmmm... how does that specific element work?? It's the most elusive in my opinion, I don't know if she has it, maybe it's the only one that doesn't??

Pirates were already confirmed, remember Pipsquek? First time he was indroduced during Nightmare Night? He had a pirate costume, all the way back then.
Additional note: Notice how all griffins so far have name that starts with G?
I thought of that, but Pipsqueak was only wearing a costume, and we've seen many costumes in the Nightmare Night episodes based on things that shouldn't exist in this world, like the space suit Rainbow Dash was wearing. As costumes though, they could have been based on works of fiction. The fact that the parents thought their daughter might actually become a real pirate suggests that there ARE (or at least were) real pirates somewhere in this world. I know, it's nitpicking at details, but that's my reasoning in a nutshell.

I guess that part didn't really hit me emotionally, as it was more just a passing comment than it was an item of focus. I had originally thought that this might be the episode that focuses directly on Scootaloo's handicap, but it ended up going a whole different direction with Gabby. Still need a Scootaloo-focused episode, but I was glad to see her take charge in this one, big step up for her.
Applegeek Scootaloo is my favorite out of the CMC, I can relate to her so much. I have a back disorder called Scoliosis and had to have a ton of back surgeries until 2008; not pleasant in the slightest let me tell you. so I can relate to characters like Scootaloo a lot. So her bringing that up, just as a passing comment for even a brief moment shocked me into getting teary eyed the first time I watched this episode. (Just because I wasn't expecting her to bring that up). But I can understand why others wouldn't get teary eyed at the moment, it was just a one time thing; just because I was so shocked by her bringing that up like that. Yeah Scootaloo needs to have another episode the Sleepless in Ponyville and the Flight to the Finish (although that episode is more CMC with Scootaloo struggling to accept her limitation on the side); either way she definitely needs more episodes. (Introduction to any of her family members would be nice as well).
Sorry to hear about your condition. I'm sure there's many people in the fandom who find her relatable for a similar reason. I personally want desperately for her to be able to fly, but at the same time I recognize that she represents a lot of people who are disabled in some way. I just wish that whatever direction they decide to go, that they'd address it head-on at some point and not leave us constantly guessing as to what's really going on with her inability to fly, or as to what her family situation is.
Applegeek Thank you, but you know what they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Thankfully I haven't needed a back surgery since 2008; so it's all good. And yeah Scootaloo definitely represents people who are disabled in some way. I honestly think that they did address it in Flight to the finish when she couldn't fly; I think that was them saying Scootaloo can't fly without actually saying it, and then the comment she made in this episode basically confirmed that she will never be able to fly. (Which is sad for her, but good for people/kids who have a disability, that way they can relate to her; at least on some level).
She's my favorite CMC too for somewhat similar reasons. Back in 2008 i had a slightly botched stromech surgery that caused both of my legs to get blood clots at the same time. I went into the hospital and nearly died as a result of the complication. As a result from this problem, both of my legs have swelling issues and the left one in particular is quite annoying and inhibits me from walking correctly. I still lost a ton of weight so far but the leg problem remains unfortunately.
If an episode ever gets made that is centered around Scootaloo coming to terms with her disability and rising above her problem instead of letting it take control of her life, there will be some serious tears during my reaction and it very well may be my most favorite episode in the series if done right. COTLM was feelsy and left me liquid pride, my reaction to that future episode would be full on sobbing. Thanks for sharing and i hope things are doing better for you nowadays.
Another feel-good episode to add to the list. =) It warms my heart knowing what a positive impact the Crusaders have left on Ponyville with their efforts. As for Gabby, she is just so adorable and endearing! She really is the Pinkie Pie of Griffonstone, and I hope she never loses that chipper attitude.
Scootaloo really wowed me in this one, as she seemed to be the one taking the most charge with helping Gabby. I think this is the closest the show's ever come to confirming that she might really be disabled, and I was surprised and impressed with how mature she was.
I only have two minor regrets with this episode, though the first is contestable. First, I feel like Diamond Tiara should have had a slightly bigger cameo than popping up in the background in the beginning. Helping her reassess her destiny was what led to the Crusaders getting their marks in the first place, and she's always had a big impact on their lives, for better or worse. Second, I don't wanna imagine Twi's disappointment when she realizes griffons don't really earn cutie marks, and that Gabby was just faking.
Ah well. Still an excellent episode and another excellent reaction! =)
I empathize with you in regards to Diamond Tiara, but honestly I'd rather see her be a main focus character in another episode rather than have her be a distraction in an episode like this. Background characters and cameos are fun, but they can be distracting as well if not done right.

The funny thing about this episode is that in the midst of the CMC trying to help Gabby find her purpose in life, I made a random wild card of a prediction that she would become an honorary member of the CMC and low and behold; my prediction actually came true! I know that Gabby's personality stands out from most griffons but, I can't help but wonder how Griffonstone is fairing at the time after that friendship summit that Twilight and Celestia attended; including Gilda's task in making friends with her kind?
Yeah, I really wish we had gotten to see a bit of what's going on there, but like I said, given Gabby still hoping for a cutie mark in order to be able to effect big changes, I'm guessing it's been slow going. A society like that doesn't change quickly, or easily.

I did that to for awhile. But its not the best way to see them. I stopped because I'm not sure if all of them are safe to see I think one of the scooby doo ones gave my computer a virius. (But thats also a risk on websites and TH-cam as well) I also don't know if they got them legally. I like the reactions better as long as their well done like this. Even despite the annoying changes TH-cam is still pretty great. Sometimes they have parts to episodes or full b movies that or its copyright ran out or TH-cam doesn't notice it is thier yet.

Interesting perspective on the title, Applegeek. When I first saw the episode title, it made me think that the CMC's themselves had cutie mark problems (even though they sort of addressed that in 'On Your Marks'), or that there was something flawed about their cutie marks.
I originally thought, based on the title, that the episode was going to be about them exploring the meaning of the unique symbols in their cutie marks, with a strong focus on Scootaloo's. Since that didn't happen, I was struggling to figure out the meaning of the title. Not sure if I got what the writers intended or not.

Hmm, good point about more things we share in common with griffons, unfortunately. XD Regarding the title, I was struggling to identify the meaning of it, given the episode. I actually expected something completely different. Back when I first heard about this episode title, I thought that this would be focused heavily on Scootaloo as she tried to figure out the meaning of the wing and lightning bolt insignia on her cutie mark, and that the title would be referencing the fact that she thought there was a fault with it because it didn't accurately represent her due to her handicap. Lacking that, I struggled to see where the fault was with any cutie marks in this episode, and the misunderstanding about what the mark is about is the only thing I could come up with, so I hope it's right.

I wrote this pre halfway through the episode, why does Hasbro have to make the solution so obvious?
I think in this case, it was intended to be obvious what she was good at so that instead of the focus of the story being finding out what she's good at, it would instead be the realization that she was already fulfilling her purpose, and didn't need a cutie mark to tell her that.
+Applegeek i understand that but even still all of the last 5 episodes that Hasbro has released has been super obvious from the beginning what the solution is. I just wish Hasbro made it harder to figure out the answer.

This was a cute and adorable episode. I initially thought it was gonna be about the Cutie Mark Crusaders exploring the more individual aspects of their cutie marks (feather in lightning bolt, note in star, apple heart) and I thought it was gonna be a heavy episode dealing with Scootaloo's handicap (the FAULT in our cutie marks), but even though it wasn't as huge I was expecting it to be but still good. I am glad they referenced it again though in the episode.
I think all equine creatures can get cutie marks, like zebras (Zecora) and horses (but donkeys (Cranky + Matilda) & mules (Mulia) don't evidently?). I am glad they didn't give Gabby a cutie mark because I think that would have hampered the message about one can still have a purpose that is not confined to a specific occupation. Her being an honorary crusader I felt was a satisfying ending.
And I loved Gabby. She's a great character and parallel to the more familiar behaviors of the other griffons. She's a very endearing character and her caring and bubbly personality is infectious. I definitely related with the profound desire to help and bring joy to others.

Your entire first paragraph is pretty much EXACTLY what I thought this episode was going to be about, until Gabby entered the picture. Due to how it went with Gabby, I struggled to understand the meaning of the title for this one, not sure if I got out of it what the writers intended or not.
Yeah, I agree. The title was misleading in a way when you think about the fact that its based on The Fault in Our Stars, which is why I thought it would deal with Scootaloo's inability to fly. Not to mention the fact that they pushed the episode back to later in the season. But hopefully they will address it in Season 7.
