"Is it true that there was friction on set and certain fractious fractions of the crew fractioned in to factions. Is the friction factional, or are the factions fictional?"
I think the impact of the season was due to stripping of hidden complexities and unmasking of darkest parts of characters. It was great to see how far someone can go with their denial. And made an amazing point of how although acceptance is the first step to improvement, it cannot be a final one. Under season 5 trailer, someone wrote that they want to see realistic improvement of characters with relapses and swings, and I totally agree with that desire. Most people who struggle with mental health issues have a non-linear progress, and it is admirable for creators to account for this. The darkness of the season made it both hard to watch and impossible to stop watching, and it definatly subverted expectations of most audience members not taking an easy happy ending rout for BoJack’s recovery. In addition, the new approaches to episode format were used with so much nuance. I loved the “in mind of BoJack” style of episode 6 from season 4, and I love how the creators didn’t stop there, taking new leaps both in format and narrative. Speaking of, the masterful meta-narrative of Philberth being used by viewers to justify their issues paralleled how BoJack can be perceived himself, and the remarks about tv-show characters never truly getting better because show would be cancelled then rang so true. I hope that we will see more happy moments next season, but I want the show to keep pushing it’s realism, artistic approach, and themes to their creative limits. I really love this work, and my only worry is for them to have a solid ending and not being forced to make more seasons if the story reaches it’s conclusion.
Wow. You should definitely review shows. Bojack is an awesome show and you're an awesome analyst. It's crazy how the realest show out there is one with talking animals.
I LOVED the new season. Its amazing: they experimented with narration styles, we got to see backstories and a lot of character development, the realistic depiction of psychotic opioid addiction, the subtle shattering of the fourth wall constantly with those metajokes, and lets not forget the damn *credits song* . It felt smooth to watch and, although it left me with a bittersweet taste , it was a good season, and their darkest yet. The show keeps on getting better.
This season was so real to me. It was one of the darkest and realistic ones. Self improvement is not easy. And you could tell BoJack was trying- really trying. But most of the time we are powerless to fight out inner demons. Inadequate and unprepared for the pain we have to endure to be better. It's easier to numb ourselves than admit we simply can't do it. Our mistakes can be too much and they suffocate us. But when we stop blaming others why we are the way we are, stop making excuses, stop running, stop numbing, stop leaning on our own strength- then we can start to heal. Can't wait for the next season already.
Alec Walker yes I was thinking the same! I’ve noticed a few characters that I believed represented other things like Vance Waggoner was a representation of Bojack (and all of mainstream Hollywood irl)
