A Rolex is many things. It can be an investment, a functional watch, a piece of mechanical art, a piece of jewelry, a status statement, or a conversation piece. One thing for sure is that people want them and buy them. It has the most sophisticated marketing of any product ever made.

I am confused people say Rolex is a good investment but when I look into The Watchfinder,The Watch box and other websites to buy a preowned Rolex sometimes it has the buying price and the selling price and if you want to sell to them the price is 40% to 50% less than what they sell to you? So that tells me it is a good investment only for them. I understand that they are in business and must make a profit but I wish people would look into it and stop saying Rolex keeps its value cause it doesn't. I love the Datejust and would like to have one mostly because my parents got married in 1945 but when I am about to pull the trigger and I see all those other boutiques with beautiful watches for the money I walk away.

    • @damachine3

That story is completely different if you can get it from an AD, at retail price. If you could get a steel Submariner, GMT, or Daytona from an AD (retail price), It would be the best and most guaranteed investment you could ever make. I already bought several of the new ones...from my AD, of course.

@@damachine3 The problem is I don't like any of those you mentioned I only like the Datejust for the reason I mentioned but even if I did you can't get them. There is a watch collector on you tube who said he knows a guy who is friends with an AD and he has over 100 new Rolex Daytonas and Submariners that he sells a few at a time and Roman from Luxury bazaars said they rather sell wholesale to other dealers at a discount before selling them to the public to keep prices and demand high. You should also be very careful. I was invited to an interview with a company CEO which based on my experience I should have easily got. Since the role was very well rewarded financially, I dressed appropriately including my most valuable watch (Rolex 5513). I got there and we talked for ages. An hour in he noticed my watch and we got talking about time pieces. He was wearing a Royal Oak himself.
I came out of the meeting expecting a call a few days later inviting me in to discuss terms. Instead I got a call around an hour later from an agent who informed me I wouldn't be invited back because I was too focused on money - Something we did not even discuss!

Doc’s diagnosis is spot on. I really want a GMTM2 Pepsi, because I love the watch. I visited the local AD and I asked about the wait list, more than willing to wait 5 years. She tells me all the watches are “allocated”, I asked “indefinitely” she says “Yes.” She then blurted “but we don’t keep wait lists.” I ignored the glaring inconsistency of allocating watches without a list of who they are allocated to, looked at the near empty case and left. I started thinking about the Tudor GMT, but then decided that would just be rewarding Rolex’s poor customer service. I also wonder why they keep spending money on giant billboards for watches that can’t be purchased unless you spend 100k on other items to get on the non existent allocation list.

I'm surprised all these status seeking hype beasts bother with buying a real Rolex. For less than a thousand you can buy a "super replica" made from the same 904L steel with an ETA movement that looks almost identical side by side. You got yourself a Submariner at 90% off instead of at double MSRP.
*Sure, there are the ethical and moral issues with counterfeit goods but as a status symbol/clout seeker it's very hard to argue against this angle

    • @Mister_Phafanapolis
      @Mister_Phafanapolis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Marcus Maximus Treating a Rolex purchase as some sort of lifetime achievement award is the problem and cause of the brand being a status system. It's not. It's just a watch. Not even the best watch for the money.
I’m skeptical of the quality claims of these luxury watch manufacturers (and their fan boi Stans.) From what I have seen and experienced with reps and microbrands the peak of quality-to-price ratio is around a $1,000-ish maybe up to $2,000. Above that you’re paying for marketing and gilding the lily. Sure, above that you get more polished bevels, higher shine polishing and finer grit brushing but I’m not so sure that means you get a better quality, longer lasting, more accurate product. You are getting _prettier jewelry,_ but not necessarily a _better watch._

For the ridiculous price asked for by retailers for this massively over rated watch, I can buy a 1 year old, solid gold Glashutte, Senator Automatic!

To each his or her own.
Here is America Rolex is the ultimate middle-class watch. For instance, I know 6 people with Rolexes - only half even own a house (and none of them palaces to say the least ) -. These are not rich folks.

I had a Rolex GMT back in the 1960s when in the army and the bracelets were not that good. Mine snapped open whilst fording a crocodile infested river in Malaya and the GMT was lost to the the crocodiles. My present watch is a Seiko SARB035 on a leather strap.

What can Rolex do for me?...
    Rolex can jog on!
Even before the artificially engineered steel sports watch shortages, the ridiculous wait lists, and not even being able to leave the store with the warranty and stickers in place they where still over priced.
Too much stigma, elitism and just paying through the nose for the name. Now they just treat their customers like idiots and think we should line up to worship at the altar of their giant marketing BS!
    Give me a break 🙄
    Sorry, just my opinion.

My problem is I want a new Rolex because I see myself wearing it every day and doing all of these awesome things with it on, like somehow the watch will provide me with that. Or I want a watch that will last a hundred years or more, but for the price I could buy 50 other quality watches one every other year (not going to live 100 years). The problem with all this is, I already have one. Its a watch. It tells the time and date. Nothing more.

Marcus Maximus property investments often oversee the inflation and currency devaluation. For example, your 100k property brought you 10k dividends after tax but the dollar sank 7%, so you really only made 3%. Property is not an international commodity and is definitely not as liquid. You have to go through tons of paperwork and time to sell your property while you can sell a gold Daytona for 40k in an hour and see the cash on hands right away.
