Who'll Stop The Rain - No One

  • Suggested by Patreon Subscriber Craig, this key Seventies Vietnam picture from director Karel Reisz is another that was on my very long “reviews to do” list. Craig sort of bumped it. I much prefer it to the tentpole Nam flick releases of the seventies in part because it has much of relevance to say and a more concise and less bombastic way of saying it. It wasn’t a big hit, didn’t get any accolades and was quickly dismissed and forgotten. But not by me - or Craig, apparently.

    I remember when you could come home from the pub, stagger to the telly with it's limited number of channels and actually find a good movie to watch, this was one of them.
    It was as if whoever was selecting these films actually cared about the audience, sadly no longer the case, imo, good review thanks.

      I know, bonpourvous. Three channels. What's the term, quality not quantity?

    A review definitely for the better, such a terrific film. with "Cutters Way" this is my favourite Vietnam movie. Thank you for putting it in the spotlight, it deserves to be rediscovered, it is as sharp as a blade, and the ending is gut wrenching.

    Thanks again Tony, for perceptive and entertaining review. I agree, it probably should have kept the original title. And a film nearly as good as the novel.

    I've considering making my own Vietnam film one day with a unique spin, it would be about the soldiers dealing with one of they're own who's a sadistic bully who's loyal to no one, I'm imagining a lumbering tall almost chubby figure who pushes people around for his own kicks, so the others try to take him down or even attempt to get him purposefully shot by the charlies

    This movie would make a great double feature with Rolling Thunder. The movie was badly marketed in ‘78. It really fits with the films of the first half of the decade more than post-Jaws, Rocky, Star Wars era. At the time of release Grease and Animal House were dominant at box office. Audiences were moving past the 70s back to a fairy tale pre Vietnam USA. Up in Smoke came out around the same time, and was a blockbuster: The counterculture and drug culture were now cartoons. No room for Who’ll Stop the Rain.

      Great shame as I think it's one of the very best movies set around Vietnam. But you make a good point. T.

    I´ve never seen this which I´ll correct ASAP after your usual brilliance Tony. Love Nolte especially in Cape Fear and 48 hours. Most of my heroes are ´bad boys´. So much more aspiring to me than safe and dependable i.e. boring.

    Excellent review of a very good movie that is still criminally underrated. Nolte was on something of a hot streak during this period, at least in my mind with this, North Dallas Forty (greatest sports film ever made imo and the most realistic), 48 HRS, and Teachers. As you say, everyone in the film is brilliant and the Vietnam War courses its way through its veins like a lethal dose, you know won’t end well. As per usual Tony, a thoughtful and intelligent review of a 70s overlooked classic.

    Great review, Tony. I used to own Who'll Stop the Rain on VHS back in the day (late 80's). Underrated and totally forgotten by millennials and zoomers aka The Superhero-Social Justice Generation.

    That poster and title look and sound like an entirely different kind of film. Definitely seems more like 'Coming Home' with Voight & Fonda, or 'The River' with Spacek and Gibson' than what this film actually is. Marketing team needed to re-think that strategy.

    • @tonybush555
      @tonybush555  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Strikes me, along with the title changes/confusion, they were conflicted about how to sell it. Went for the dreamy romantic look, which is misleading in terms of the tone and content of the film. T.

    Nice one Tony. Cheers. I have to agree, I do not find Vietnam War films appealing. This is not because this conflict was lost by the North Americans, but because I do not find the majority of films that cover this subject worthwhile. North American is rarely portrayed as the bad guys, instead opting for tragedy, as if USA weren't the NAZIs. Examples of bad films include "Rambo: First Blood Part II". What a pile of garbage. There is the abysmal John Wayne Flag-Waving wankfest "The Green Berets". "Platoon" was terrible, forgettable trash. I won't go on, lest I spoil my day. Suffice to say; Vietnam? No thank you.

    • @tonybush555
      @tonybush555  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I was always a bit mystified why Platoon was so revered and highly rated. Alternatively, no mystery why The Green Berets was universally trashed. T.

      @@tonybush555 I think 'Platoon' at least showed the ferocity and chaotic nature of the fighting. So it was sort of a visceral acknowledgement of the wrong-headedness of that conflict. Dramatically the film is too simplistic, but it might have served as cathartic to just show how screwed up things were. My best guess anyway. Never re-watched it.
