I saw Pantera 12 times throughout the 90s, and there was a period there - somewhere between 1995 and 1998, I suppose - where Phil Anselmo would address the crowd, which he did 50 times a show, and eventually get to the topic of Metallica, where he would say Metallica did this and did that and sold out and went soft, etc, and that "we [Pantera] are the new kings of heavy metal. No radio play, no MTV videos, just you the fans and us. We are the new kings of heavy metal."
Of course it was true, Pantera were a ruthless, relentless touring act. I mean, they came to my town (Detroit) twice a year in those days. And every one of those Ozzfests in the late 90s back then. And they were the new kings of heavy metal, it was undisputed.
However. Whenever Phil would go off on one of those rants, you could clearly see Dimebag (and maybe the others) shuffling their feet in discomfort, listening to the spokesperson of their band sort of insult their personal heroes, and they would have to listen through it, having those words represent themselves despite the fact they probably didn't represent how they actually felt.
Anyway, just saw Pantera and Metallica last night at Ford Field and apparently its all good now LOL.

its funny to read some of the messages about Panteras "glam days". What does it matter what their sound was in the early to mid 80's? Metallica's sound change dramatically from Kill em all to the black album. Many bands shift their sound as they find their way, and most of the glam hair metal stuff they were doing was before Phil joined the band. They did one "glam" record with him before they started to shift towards the CFH sound that got heavier and heavier with each new album. If the Pantera haters are trying to bash the group because they had a sound that just about every band had in the 80's, that's pretty weak. But its cool, if you hate Pantera for how they sounded when they were 15 years old, oh well. What they did for metal, real metal, in the 90's will always out weigh their early days. Even Rex says the glam stuff isnt Pantera, that wasn't their true identity. They discovered that once Phil came in. Metallica may have made millions in the 90's but Pantera carried the flag for metal during that period. And it says a lot that during their shows together how many comments ive read from people saying this version of Pantera was far better than Metallica. Metallica will always have their spot on the mt rushmore of metal, but Pantera has their argument to be in the conversation.

Back in the day you had to buy albums and your musical knowledge was incredibly thin compared to today's kids listening to 80 different genres on Spotify or TH-cam. You simply didn't have the same spectrum of influence and knowledge. It was incredibly common listening to 5 or 6 mainstream artists and then maybe find a cassette of some underground band. It was totally plausible for Pantera listening to big mainstream artists and being influenced by them. For example it's incredible how many metal bands loved Kiss, they all grew up with them even if kiss are not even an "influence" in their music, grunge and metal bands all f with Gene Simmons and company. So, no, it's not strange at all that Pantera were glam at 16, they didn't have a time machine in the 80s in order to use Spotify and listen to different artists.

    • @-........
      @-........ หลายเดือนก่อน

@@gabrielegagliardi3956 Back in the day, the musical landscape was a completely different beast compared to what we have now. You didn’t have the luxury of having thousands of songs from every imaginable genre at your fingertips. No, instead, you had to go out and physically buy albums, or if you were lucky, tape them off the radio or borrow a cassette from a friend. And let’s be real, your musical knowledge was painfully limited compared to today’s kids who can explore 80 different genres on Spotify or TH-cam without breaking a sweat. The sheer spectrum of influence and knowledge available to them is astronomical, and they don’t even realize how good they have it.
Back then, it was incredibly common, almost a given, to listen to just 5 or 6 mainstream artists-who were pretty much force-fed to you by radio stations and MTV. If you were really adventurous, you might stumble upon a cassette of some underground band, but that was more the exception than the rule. There was no algorithm curating a playlist of obscure tracks for you; you had to dig through record stores, relying on word of mouth or pure luck. So it’s not surprising at all that a band like Pantera started out glam when they were teenagers. They didn’t have a time machine in the 80s to jump forward and use Spotify to broaden their horizons and discover different artists that might have led them down another path. They were simply products of their time.
And let's not forget how pervasive mainstream artists were back then. It’s incredible how many metal bands from that era absolutely idolized Kiss. Even if Kiss didn’t directly influence their music, they were still a massive part of the cultural backdrop. Grunge, metal, punk-these bands all had mad respect for Gene Simmons and company. It’s almost hilarious to think about how deeply Kiss wormed their way into the hearts of musicians who went on to create vastly different sounds. But that’s what happens when your access to music is so restricted. You latch onto what’s available, and sometimes that means that the glam rock theatrics of Kiss end up seeping into the consciousness of bands that would later help define much harder and darker genres.
So, no, it’s not strange at all that Pantera was glam when they were 16. People seem to forget that these were kids growing up in an era with limited musical exposure. They didn’t have the luxury of hopping onto TH-cam and exploring a dozen different subgenres in an afternoon. They were shaped by what they could get their hands on, and at the time, glam was what was accessible and popular. Expecting them to have been anything else at that age is absurd when you consider the constraints of the time. Honestly, it’s a testament to their growth that they evolved from that glam sound into the iconic metal force they eventually became.

It has nothing to do with the band supposedly being racist or bigots (learn the difference). They could care less about that or anything sociopolitical. I can show you metal bands that propagate actual racism without being a virtue-signaller! Apart from punk, there is a hint of classic rock in Master.
