@Keller Mulumba I liked Outliers. I got into that book around a time I needed to hear that message. I lost my mom and found it hard to cope in school and even failed that semester. Without going into details (because I want other people to enjoy the book as well) reading that book and the way he presented how mediocre people achieve things you’d except privileged people to attain inspired me. Anyway, at the time, it helped me see things in a new light, and eventually, I overcame my circumstances and graduated with my B.A. Of course, that is nothing compared to the success stories he describes in his book but, each one presents a unique aspect to success. You don’t have to be a genius to achieve your goals, you just have to practice more.
Malcolm Gladwell is the man that came up with the 10,000 hrs theory. Basically, if you practice something for 10,000 hrs you become a master in that craft.

Robert Green is nowhere near the great author Malcolm is. Greene basically just writes self help books that are actually common sense. Malcolm is a much more versatile author.
Charlamagnes ideal on "White Privilege" is so minuscule. When people refer to this privilege they're not referring to an individual thought process that you can just channel, its a Cultural structure that we live in.
cole council I don't compare the two. I think about it the other way. I don't believe in White Supremacy. Having Privilege does not make you Supreme and having Economical Power doesn't make you Superior.
Char really is a simpleton. He lacks the ability of analytical and critical thinking. I'll give him credit for being a reader--which accounts for lots of his success--but he only regurgitates the information, without self-analysis or in-depth examination of the ideas. Char was sincerely heartbroken when Gladwell was on TBI and said he had changed his opinion on some of his analysis in his books, because Char had taken those ideas as gospel without applying any personal insight. Sadly, I think critical thinking is something the brain has to be trained to do from a young age and continually developed over a lifetime. It may be too late for Char in this regard.

This a fascinating interview. I'm from the old school, middle-class Black population. What Charlamagne and Malcolm are talking about is something we called "social graces" when I was growing up. Social graces were about learning what was appropriate to do; say; wear and when it was appropriate. I learned it at home and had it reinforced at school; at church and at play. So many of today's young people have none of what I had and so they have learn things on the fly or get humiliated because they don't know. Governments cut after-school activities first where children might such things. Some of today's parents feel nobody should discipline or speak about their angel/devil children. Or parents live far away from their support systems where children might be exposed to proper manners/social graces. Or parents have to earn a living and simply don't have time to teach their children. These are some of the reasons why young are the way they are today. I wonder what I can do as an old-school, Black elder looking at all these problems. I don't think it's enough to complain about them without having some solutions in mind.
patchwork bluez This is so true and as a 23 yr old who came from a pretty well off black family, these are things we are taught from birth. How to operate in this society is kind of 2nd nature to us but it also is a downfall for me because I didn't REALLY know about the true struggles of the black community Until recently, because I was sheltered from those hardships.
Guess what? You can teach yourself about the Black community. Libraries have books about us. There are lectures you can attend. With the internet, you can go online and order books about us too. This may sound silly but first-hand knowledge is always a good thing. So you could hangout at senior citizen centers and nursing homes. They're always looking for volunteers. Trust me, you'll hear some great stories from our elders there. I hesitate to suggest this but if religion is your thing, church is another place to find us, too. In this age of political action, joining a rally or a march or a visit to your state or city representative is another place to meet your elders. I hope I've been helpful.

Very good report. You're exactly correct. That's the way it was back then, blacks had their own culture that was great because we were disciplined by our own leadership to become better citizens. Even though we had little money, treated disrespectful, we had the ability to stand above our tormentors with dignity and courage.
This is an impressive interview. I had not heard of this author before and now I have just added him to my podcast and reading list and its a long list. He was write about the reading thing and working in the time to do it. One of the reasons why reading has increased because we have awakened to the fact that we have been miseducated and now we have to catch up and make sure our children do the same.

See, based on the comments here, FAR TOO MANY Black people are looking at what they interviewers are doing or how they are taking Gladwell off subject. That’s not as important as the jewel that Gladwell is offering. I guarantee you that many of these criticisms come from people who has never read One book by Malcom. There is so much relevance particularly at 29:10 area and 35:-40:00. Sadly too many black people are bent and conditioned toward negativity and generational ignorance. Also, get someone like Ray Kurzweil on to discuss the Singularity and Robin DiAngelo to discuss White Fragility. Keep expanding minds!

There is so much Gladwell is educating AfriCan America’s on in this video. See, based on the comments here, FAR TOO MANY Black people are looking at what they interviewers are doing or how they are taking Gladwell off subject. That’s not as important as the jewel that Gladwell is offering. I guarantee you that many of these criticisms come from people who has never read One book by Malcom. There is so much relevance particularly at 29:10 area and 35:-40:00. Sadly too many black people are bent and conditioned toward negativity and generational ignorance. The cycles can be broken but when it’s Not you end up with severely broken communities for generations to come.
I am a teacher, educator, health psychology professional but I’m still a black mother who FEELS what is said here and I appreciate it. ✌🏽❤️

The big BONG theory is scientisms pride and joy. But it's all speculation. No human was there to see it so it's a guess. At least we used to have scientist's. Like Einstein when he PROOVED his theory of relatively by wiewing several solar eclipses. Scientism is an idea holds no weight. They just talk about things they can't prove and believe.

Malcolm never disappoints, so good call there. Please also consider having Gregory Porter on to talk about his music (your audience who may not know who he is yet will love his sound and those who do know him will be stoked for you to have him on). Also, get someone like Ray Kurzweil on to discuss the Singularity and Robin DiAngelo to discuss White Fragility. Keep expanding minds!

I love Charlemagne's interview style, he always asks follow up questions. It shows he's listening to the information being discussed. Envy, on the other hand, always buts in and asks questions that are so off topic. It's like he's just asking a question to get a question in. It's so annoying.
Aye YO!!!??? The fact that the BC brought Malcolm Gladwell on to speak. I have all of his books and love his train of thought and the way he expresses himself. It's great to see TI and the rest of dem, but having people like Gladwell, Dyson, and Rye that really spark thought and conversation on the show makes a HUGE difference.

Never heard of this guy until now, great guy and, great interview. Will definitely have to read some of his work. As for as charlamagne is concerned i am a big supporter of his. Alot of people dont like him but his intelligent and he keeps it real. He doesnt sugar coat and yes when they have these type interviews he is always the most knowledgeable of the three. I listen to his podcast as well, he's always trying to better people and push the envelope.
Envy asks questions like how he DJs, no blend nor mix, just cuts in with awkward questions...
