They added B.C. in the US for legal reasons and it was a pun on Before Christ. They dropped it as soon as they could. There is a choire singing at the end of Monstrance Clock that wasn't in the music video. It's really good.
Oh man, you have to, YOU HAVE TO! listen to their Beatles "Here comes the sun" cover and how they transformed it into such a 60's dark masterpiece, that sounds like an original and the original like a parody cover of their cover ... such a vibe! Also, another very cleverly written ballad you have to check, is "He is". Such a clever song and with such beautiful harmonies, that It might pass in any church as a christian hit song, if you don't see the visuals.
Whilst it's not always the best from a sound quality perspective, I recommend listening to some live recordings of Ghost because they definitely have an atmosphere and are one of those bands that put on a show. I originally found this song a bit dull and repetitive until I saw it live and it clicked. I think for Mary on a Cross they have an official well-filmed live version in Tampa with good audio.
This is Papa II. His mask/makeup is the most menacing looking of the 4/5. As for this coming out in the 80s, I actually think this band would have been HUGE as an underground band that could have either burned out or blown up. I mean, I remember when we were being warned that DND players were cults and they would set up real missions to kill real people. Like that was a "real thing" in my school, we were convinced to believe it. But I also gravitated toward Dungeons and Dragons, gangsta rap, and heavy metal BECAUSE of people telling me how bad they were for me. I aimed to ONLY buy albums with Tipper's warning. And that is Ghost's whole thing, Tobias has talked about how he "found Satan" as a pop culture icon. He doesn't believe in Satan as this Christian figure of evil. He is subversively taunting the empire of Christianity and other major religions with THEIR beliefs in this childish baby babble that then leads to a massive power structure of oppression. ALSO, you can take this song a couple of ways... one of them is come together as one people, to bring about Lucifer's son in a loving way. OR... come together... to procreate Lucifer's son... ;) Edit: Regarding Mary On A Cross, since it sounds like you're going to do that, despite what the Internet wants you to believe it has nothing to do with the Virgin Mary or sex. And that's straight from Tobias. It's about coming up with your friends and trying to make it. And it's a play on words for marijuana cross. The song, in Ghost lore, was written in 1969 by Papa Nihil and so this was something those bands might do to get around the censors and squeeze in a drug message.
Thanks for the information, that is what we need! I love learning about the why! Sounds like we grew up in the same era or close to it! Once I get the lore and the Papa 1-5 straight, I think we will be in the right track😃
@@professorandknowitall I have come to fall off of them on their last two records but absolutely see them live. One of the best, most fun live bands I've ever seen. Very funny too.
There's a live video of Papa III talking about this before the song..titled...talking about birds & bees.... female orgasm...a sin supposedly....communal orgy and orgasm.. where he says something like....f. ing you all. Lmao. Look up what meaning of monstrance clock is....

I second this, so much. Their cover is amazing. I’m still mad that it’s not on Spotify.

I agree, we are trying to be methodical about going from the beginning on the videos and then hitting the lives, but the call is becoming too great!!😂

Ghost used to close their shows with this song, and the song is about orgasm lol
Really! 😂😂 I think seeing them live is becoming a bucket list item!
