"All of Me" and the lighter side of disability

For more than 40 years Emmy Award-winner Kyra Sedgwick has starred in films and on TV, including the series "The Closer," and has shared the world stage with her husband, fellow actor Kevin Bacon. Now, in the Off-Broadway comedy "All of Me," Sedgwick plays the mother of a young disabled woman who is romantically involved with a disabled man. Correspondent Mo Rocca talks with Sedgwick about the play she calls a "family dysfunction story," and with actors Madison Ferris and Danny J. Gomez, who say they like the play for not indulging in what's been called "inspiration porn."

I’m a disabled adult. I was really glad to see this bit, especially bc CBS Sunday has a very long history of featuring “inspiration p--“ as defined in this bit. However, when the one actress bragged about not living with her mom (good for her, but the framing of living with one’s parents as a negative thing was not necessary) and Kyra Sedgwick said that the measure of success as a parent is your child moving out. Many disabled people can not live independently. And many people live with their parents for other reasons. In some cultures, multi-generational households are the norm. There is no need to add to the stigma of multi-generational households in American society. Our strange fixation on individualism is getting harmful.

I agree with you. I am a disabled adult and never left my parents. Everyone is not the same. In my opinion living your best is different for everyone disabled or not. I would still like to see the play.
