    The Wii can also use component cables and go up to 480P with those cables, which is technically "Enhanced Definition" and not standard definition. But that's still not High Definition like the other consoles of the time (even though many PS3 and Xbox 360 games didn't have native HD resolutions). All technicalities aside, the point I'm making in this particular video is that the perception around the Wii is that it was in standard definition and the Xbox 360 and PS3 were in high definition.

      To be honest , my brother Hedi was a big nintendo fanboy who used to draw mario everywhere and he is now making a mario bros clone for android devices , just because he wants to be hired by nintendo (in kyoto, Japan) , because he wants to meet Shigeru Myamoto , he really loves the dudes working there and he actually have Satoru Iwata's picture on the wall (nintendo manager who died in 2015 , he used to cry and pray for Satoru Iwata) .
      He even has Yamuchi's (nintendo founder) photo on the wall too .

    I've been a gamer for over 30 years. NES was my first gaming experience back in 1986. As much as I love PS and PC gaming but my true love has always been for Nintendo. The best thing about them is that they're not afraid to do things outside the box plus they're always proud with their identity that games is for everyone. Despite their ups and down over the years I'm glad they're still here fighting in the console business. Hoping for another great year for Nintendo in 2020 and beyond.

      Cartidge Bandit Really?
      Who pioneered the now-standard D-pad, shoulder button and analog thumbstick?
      Who made an adapter for playing portable games on a TV console?
      Who made rumble a quasi-standard console experience?
      Who brought touch screens to portable gaming?
      Who popularized motion controls?
      Who made the first major console to incorporate all of these features in one elegant package and sell like perfect hotcakes for it?
      And who's doing this TODAY, because they're actually still in the console business?
      You get one guess.

      Cartidge Bandit CD games: NEC, with the PC Engine CD add-on in 1987.
      TV games on a portable: NEC, with portable PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 models.
      6-button controller: Nintendo, with the standard SNES controller. Shoulder buttons count and are easier to access all at once. Sega's 6-button controller wasn't until 1993.
      16-bit console: NEC. PC Engine/Turbo Grafx-16 again.
      Portable with TV tuner add-on: Sega. But the Game Gear was too battery-hungry, so it hardly mattered then.
      Backwards compatibility: Atari. The 7800 could play VCS games.
      16-bit-to-32-bit jump: Sega. But it was ALREADY partially a 32-bit console, so it's a Schrödinger's jump.
      Developed the launch day: The F does that even mean? If you're talking prerelease hype, that was nothing new.
      Celebrity games: Sega. But they're just as much a pox on the industry as they are a boon.
      Most arcade ports: Sega. They ARE primarily an arcade company, after all.
      Clamshell boxes: Atari. Gatefolds are a progenitor of plastic clamshells.
      3rd revision: NEC.
      Still making the popular console in Brazil: Brazil's most popular console is actually the Xbox 360, so that question has no answer.
      Still making the most popular console in the Americas: The Nintendo DS holds the title of most popular portable and the PS2 is the most popular TV console in the Americas. So, again, no answer.
      Best game of 1991 award: Oh, wow, that means SOOOOO much more than all of the best-game-of-the-year awards that Sega DIDN'T win! It only counts when Sega does it! Yup, yup, yup!
      Online gaming: Depends on how you define it. Nintendo took a stab at it with the Famicom with DLC for some games, but Sega briefly had a stint with online multiplayer with the Genesis.
      Broke Nintendo's dominance: NEC did it in Japan, then Sega did it in the West. Dony was the first to do it worldwide.CD games: NEC, with the PC Engine CD add-on in 1987.

      Marketing: Most successful, certainly, was Sega. Gotta give due credit. But the marketing was also rather shallow, at least in America, and xenophobic. Sega is infamous for infighting between the West and Japan despite being founded by Americans in Japan. Nintendo's was consistently good barring their weird tryhard N64 days, and even then they pushed Pokémon, practically an industry in itself, with aplomb.
      Friendly to gamers: Microsoft. Sega may be friendly to fangame makers, but that's to get out of doing the right thing with Sonic, which they're now positioning as a joke franchise.
      And Sega wasn't always supportive of unofficial games, though they did allow the Game Genie to be a licensed product for their consoles. Whoopie-do.
      Edgier company: Yes, Sega. But leading to the creation of the ESRB, which benefitted everyone, Nintendo included. And Midway made Mortal Kombat anyway, so it's only partially a Sega thing. Also, Sega had its own share of "kiddie" games on its systems, and, Western censorship not withstanding, Nintendo systems had unique dark games. Or do RPGs not count to you? Not every edgy game is XTREEEEEEAM or hyper-gory.
      Thank you for playing and good night.

    The Wii also started the misconception that "Nintendo hardware has never been powerful and always behind a generation from the competition." Some people actually believe that just because they have done that since the Wii. Despite the fact that a little research on the specs of their pre Wii consoles show that misconception is wrong.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Yeah, a lot of people think the PS2 is more powerful than the GameCube. PS2 discs can hold more data than GameCube discs but the hardware itself is more powerful for GameCube.

    • @CarbonRollerCaco
      @CarbonRollerCaco 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Retro Bird True, but the difference in media size tended to matter more than the difference in power, plus PS2 controllers were clearly superior input-wise to GCN ones. And plenty of people seriously think that PS1 and Dreamcast discs store more than GCN discs just because of their physical size differences even though the opposite is true due to the different data densities of the disc types.

    • @CarbonRollerCaco
      @CarbonRollerCaco 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's a muddy question. The major consoles of the third to sixth generations were about equally capable in different ways. As an example, the Genesis had a superior main processor and superior resolution to the SNES, but the SNES had more color depth and RAM, plus its specialized hardware let it pull off advanced graphical and audio effects with greater code efficiency than the Genesis.

    • @mikeymacaque
      @mikeymacaque 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I remember people saying that about the Gamecube too, even if it was wrong. But when Nintendo’s response to not having a DVD player was “we’re a game company,” it felt tone deaf, especially when the Gamecube wasn’t much cheaper than the Xbox and PS2 and had DVD players, the other two systems felt like more bang for your buck. It also helped justify having a game console on the family TV and not just in the kid’s bedroom/play room. I know my parents bought my brother and I a PS2 *because* they wanted a DVD player for their TV and the PS2 was a better value proposition.

    One small correction to the Wii segment, there were official component cables that you could purchase that made the Wii look much nicer and cleaner. I bought them soon after launch and the difference was huge. Any time I went to someone else's house to play Smash Bros Brawl, I could tell immediately if they were using composite cables because the image was so much blurrier and less defined.

    • @RetroBirdGaming

    Even though I'm a huge Nintendo fan I skipped on the Wii U. Was waiting to get it for BOTW but the game kept getting delayed and by the time the official release date was established the Switch was announced as well was BOTW as a launch title. So I just got the Switch. Then Nintendo has slowly been porting the Wii U games to Switch with improved versions of the games. So there is less reasons to own a Wii U other than for game/console collecting.

      I got my Wii U this year... had very little interest in it while it was still alive, I had moments were I would think about it and then chose not to bother, I'm usually at least a console generation behind anyway and that opens up to get the system as it's dying and everyone's bored with it. But with the Wii U there were no store clearance or anything, so had to get it used, got really lucky to get one with a pristine screen, not a single scratch not even a small light one (which was just a gamble).
      As a hacked machine it is very nice, it plays everything Nintendo all the way back to Game & Watch through emulation or in hardware as Wii and Gamecube (the latter using Nintendont). It's just a great emulator box, and it's nice to be able to play all of it as a handheld, and I would argue it's way more comfortable to hold than the Switch since it's not intended to be portable outside the house. A hacked Switch might be very comparable though - only it can't run Wii and GC; Nintendo DS emulation will not be with two screens and I'm not sure you can use the joycons as a substitute for a light gun, like you can the Wii-motes - also not as easy to do and still requires hardware to make it happen as far as I know.
      Looking at game library the Switch is miles ahead of it though, that's just undeniable. I'll get into it once it's dying off. 😄

    In early 2013 we were burglarized and lost about $10k worth of electronics and jewelry. Some of what we lost included a Wii, a backwards compatible PS3, and our copy of Castlevania SOTN which was inside of it. Our homeowners insurance cut us a decent check that covered most of it and for my birthday later that year, my wife surprised me by buying me a Wii U Deluxe. That console may not have had the best 3rd party support, but I sure did enjoy the hell out of Nintendo's first party releases for it and I have some really special memories of 5 player Nintendoland with my wife and 3 kids. The Wii U was also the first console my son, born in 2010, had ever really played. It was his introduction to Mario and so many other awesome Nintendo franchises. So while most other people have no trouble at all forgetting the Wii U, it will always have a very special place in my family's history.

The Wii was disliked by hardcore gamers, but a lot of wii consoles are compatible with gamecube stuff. What seemed like a throwaway capability at launch has become a huge boon to the system.

My first ever console was a SNES but then I skipped the N64 and got a PS1, then back to Nintendo with the GameCube but also had a PS2, then I had mixed feeling on the Wii even though I owned one so I went with the Xbox 360 since Sony priced themselves out of my family at the time with the PS3, then I went with PS4 last gen due to the Wii U not appealing to me and I also got a launch model Switch which is still kicking to this day, and now I have an Xbox Series S and a gaming PC for my raw power setup and my Switch for the exclusives. I've been playing Japanese third parties and indies on all my current gen platforms more than anything these days as there's some neat stuff coming out but still love to fire up an emu or one of my old consoles every now and then. The massive problem with Nintendo is that it feels like totalitarianism where everybody has to like every Nintendo orientated game. It's called being a Nintendo fanboy. There's no freedom of expression, only a loyalty echo chamber.
    Growing up in the UK I learned to grow up exposed to a variety of different gaming and learned about different platforms because of the adventure of exploration. I'm a massive Sega fan and Amiga fan but I'll happily criticise those platforms or companies. Nintendo fans are conditioned not to and that is the problem. What Nintendo has done as a company especially with emulation makes me hate them even more. This is why 90% on American TH-camrs have a very Nintendo centric slant to the videos they put out. Most of the ZX Spectrum and Amiga libraries (which have thousands of games each) are obscure on TH-cam. They shouldn't be because they are well known in Europe yet get next to no coverage by USA or Japanese TH-camrs keeping newer generations in ignorance of game history. There's no excuse for maintaining ignorance because of loyalty.
    Guys there's a whole world out there with tons of platforms to explore, games to delight the senses or terrors to make you scream. When Nintendo fans or specifically gamers in North America do that maybe they might find out that a lot of their Nintendo games, specifically those for the NES...were actually crap or overrated? 😆

    I think most of the hate Nintendo gets in modern times has more to do with many of their baffling and often hostile decisions. Like going after fan projects, lacking vital functions and optimizations or options in games that should be a given, and all that.
    It often seems like they are going out of their way to enforce dumb practices that only makes them look bad in the eyes of their own fans, with there really being nothing for them to gain from doing so :/

Like was said in the video their strength is in their first party titles and I'm not really a super fan of any of them (I don't like 3D platformers and never cared for the early 3D Zeldas) so it's never really justified me buying a console. I think the main reason why the Wii U failed was because that system didn't really have a main Mario or Zelda game. If upon release, there was a must have 3D Mario game, then people would have had to buy the new system to play it. But since those games didn't come out, people just didn't really know it was there. That and the fact of the name. I didn't buy one until right before it got cancelled as I wanted to play the Mario Maker game.

      So I count Breath of the Wild as a Switch game. So really the Wii U didn't have a leading Mario or Zelda game during it's main cycle. Or even a Metroid game. I didn’t get into gaming until I was a preteen, so I have no real nostalgia for Nintendo games like I do with PS1 games. However, the only reason I bought Nintendo products for years was to play Pokemon, and I’m glad the Switch forced me to bite on Nintendo’s next console because I’m loving it. With that being said, my main gripe with Nintendo is twofold: 1) their games are way too expensive and never go on sale/drop in price, and 2) their online capabilities aren’t even on par with the first Xbox, never mind contemporary systems. Nintendo has so many good multiplayer games, but their online services make going online a chore, and I don’t understand the strategy behind being a family-friendly console and charging $60 for games that came out on the Wii U when new Playstation and Xbox games drop in price months after release day. My suspicion is Nintendo’s business strategy is to “hook” people like me: people who really care about one franchise enough to always follow it on the next generation (your Zelda players, Smash players, Kart players, Pokemon, Metro, Mario, etc), which is how they can charge so much for every new franchise entry, but it’d be nice if they encouraged more exploration by lowering prices. For instance, I always wanted to check out Fire Emblem, but $60 for a game I may not enjoy is too steep. I caught the game on a freak sale at Game Stop one day and finally bit the bullet, and now I’m glad I did. I think Nintendo should do more of this.

Mario games are great fun to play but he and his pals have always been a bit dull to me. Wish Nintendo would stop relying on the same old settings and character roster. Also while I'm ranting sorry, Nintendo should give us free cloud saves, guarantee backwards compatibility for future consoles and fix its rubbish store. Bird you left out some of the obvious stuff.
    The reason it took Nintendo so long to get back 3rd party support goes back to the Nintendo.
    They had some really hardcore service agreements with game makers. It was good and bad.
    The good was it endured most games were pretty good and they always worked right. This was fallout from the video game crash of the 80's. People forget or don't know how bad it was at one point. From Atari to all the home computer consoles it was always hit or miss.
    The bad is game developers felt burned by Nintendo and they had a point.
    Once there were options for these companies they decided get away from Nintendo.
    Then you have an entire generation that grew up with Nintendo being overshadowed by Sony & Xbox.
    Another fun fact: Total consoles sold including hand held, Nintendo's numbers still beat out Xbox in sales.

Although I recently got a Switch, I am a bit disappointed with the fact that most of the games are ports of Wii U games but still sell for £35-£50. There is only 1 original Mario game in Odyssey (not including Rabbids) and maybe you could include Mario Maker 2 although that is almost a port. There isn't even a new Mario Kart and they charge extra for all the new tracks.
    Xbox Game Pass & PS equivalent offer new games for free. NSO online only offers classic games and to play N64 games it costs £70 a year 😮

Luckily I went in huge on Wii and WiiU. Love those consoles. Switch... is largely overpriced ports it seems. It's not about a kiddy image for me, it's about games. I'm fine with casual type games. Go Vacation and Fishing Resort on Wii are fun. A console needs variety. That means games for everyone. If you rate your masculinity or maturity by a type of game you play... I don't know. Some levity is fine now and then. But preference is fine too. I see it like the first Superman movie. He's catching thieves and all that, but he stops to get a cat out of a tree. Why?
