You might have a better catch rate if you turn your trap 90 degrees, so the animal is stepping into the trap. When the trap fires, the loose jaw always comes up first. By him stepping over the loose jaw, it will throw his foot out of the trap. By setting the trap long ways to the hole, the trap will close around his foot and you’ll catch him deeper in the trap. This trick was taught to me by an old trapper ,who raised 12 kids trapping for 40 years. Also, He used beaver castor in his dirt holes. They can’t pass it up! Your looking good, enjoyed your video.

I'm 77 and trap no more but when I did trap I would set my trap like you did in front of a hole. When I would dig out a spot for my trap I would set the trap and put it in place and slip a piece of wax paper under the trip plate and over the two trap jaws. This way when I would sprinkle dirt or snow the wax paper kept dirt and snow from building up under the trip plate.

Thanks bub, being a 2 year old video I wasn't sure if you would answer back so I appreciate it! Il subscribe to you! Have a good rest of your day from Ohio!
Just had a coyote come running through my yard in suburbia today. It's clearly eating well, or it would have snagged on my chickens as they ran away from it. This trap doesn't work at my house, but it'll certainly work about 2 miles away.
More explanation would help a lot. Like, what trap? What was that chain setup you pounded in to the ground? I'm from red dirt part of the country, grew up hunting and have a good grasp on mechanics but I think I have more questions after watching this lol
I have a video on this on my channel!! Approach the dog with caution, I would recommend removing the dog from the trap with a catchpole and then safely releasing it. But PLEASE be careful!!!
These traps are not going to break a hand or just GO off bc you touch it..Then again if you are scared you're probably not or should not be trapping. So many times I've forgot a light & had to re-set in the dark; no problem! If you trap long enough it will happen but we're not scared of it! 😁
@@CarolinaCoyote I just got a Stalker 3” auger and bought the Kobalt 24v drill you were using after finding out my Dewalt 20v wouldn’t turn it. I’m north of Raleigh where you located? Red clay is a killer!
Great vid. Ive gotten heavy into coyote calling for the last year. I have to hunt the same areas and am looking to trap the ones that ive educated. I expect to make mistakes learning so is it as easy to educate them trapping as it is calling? Like if i screw up a set is it pretty much game over for getting that coyote with a similar setup?
Excellent well explained video. I've been educated in a short amount of time. What is that white stuff you buy from Walmart? What purpose does it serve? Also, we have fox in my area that I do not want to kill. Can you recommend a video on how to release unwanted animals that have been caught? Thanks..!
The white stuff is pollyfill or pillow cushion. I use it to put it under the pan so that dirt doesn’t keep the pan from firing. Some people use pan covers, but I don’t like them.
Why are you setting your trap dead center of the dirt hole you made? Why not offset it for the left or right side/foot? I've never had good luck planning on one walking bow legged into a dirt hole? Also. I didn't understand why the deep hole was so necessary? A simple 3-5" hole wouldn't do the same? No attacking your style or "driving from the back seat" type deal but I didn't understand that part. You are right on gusto though. That's some funky stinking working stuff
I like the deeper hole sets because there’s no way anything can get the bait out of the hole without being caught. I do offset the trap some but not much. Again, since the hole is so deep they will continue to work the set until they get caught. I’ve set some traps before and after getting pretty much finished I’ll realize that the trap isn’t as offset as I would like it to be but that’s where having a deep bait hole will help out.
People complaining about killing a coyote how they are gentle creatures. If coyotes were people theyd all be on death row. When you live on a farm and seen the things they do. Ripping calves from the mother mid labor. Bitting the tail end of deer for days just taking chunks of flesh till the animal dies from blood loss stress and exhaustion. This is the real world. Ive been a trqpper for almost 30 years I have a trapping channel BNO thats mostly water trapping snaring mink etc. So i deal with all the karens too.
When I was a boy coyotes weren't really heavy in Ohio yet and you'd catch a lot of red and Gray fox. Now grays are scarce atleast in delaware, morrow, knox, Now its primarily yotes. From around 2002 they started popping up. Now I catch them literally in the middle of the city for nuisance calls.
Exactly I totally agree with you, my brother, dad and myself live on an old farm that we're trying to rebuild and we've encountered the coyote wolf hybrids, and nature is cruel. These boobs saying that stuff are people who are comfortable inside their little boxes known as houses, these people have zero experience living off the land so why be that surprised or taken back when they're nothing but house pet humans. It's like this, why have a battle of wits with unarmed opponents?
If you want fewer coyotes around, lighten up nature's buffet. Install a Barn Owl nest box. Barn Owl eat rabbits and rodents which is a big part of a Coyote's diet.
@@geoffreyhawn1816 I've anchored to the base of trees under the dirt and to roots for years. Also sometimes use cable around trees but you need to bury all of the cable & is more time & more packing bc it needs to be firm! Use only stainless screws, they won't rust & can stay in for a very long time. Regular screws will break & can rust but stainless is much stronger! At least a 3" screw with a 5/16" hex head in the base of the tree under ground level & have never broke any or lost any animals or traps. Done it this way for years since I trap alot in the woods. Good luck!
He sells them to fox pens. That’s how the damn things got to the eastern states. Sold to fox hunters to put in pens and run with dogs. They didn’t know they could climb the wire and escape. Now there’s no stopping them.
What do you think about the mb450? This will be my first year trapping. We have mostly fox, getting a few straggler coyotes tho. I think the 550 might be to big?
The 450 is a great trap for foxes! That’s what they were made for! They’ll catch a coyote too, as long as you get a deep catch on him. I catch mostly coyotes, that’s why I run the 550s. 450s are just too small for me, but still a great trap!
Pollyfill. It’s pillow stuffing. I use it under my trap pan instead of using pan covers. My catch percentage went up drastically when I made this change!
About the auger. I see those on Amazon going for about $20. Do you know if they will hold up in rough ground? I see no reference where you may have purchased yours or how sturdy it is. Thanks again.
My 2” auger is from F&T but my 3”is from Tom Stalker. They both will hold up. The drill he is using is a good drill even for the 3”. That cheap auger you see on Facebook ads is for planting bulbs in potting soil.
I'm sure that works and it makes your set look all pretty and all that but it's really unnecessary for all that digging and your hole don't need to be but about two or three inches deep and you don't need but a drop of food about the size of the end of a qutip
Mostly animal hole. It just triggers natural instinct & curiosity, yotes, fox, & raccoons will hit a hole set like this!! I've caught mice & put them in the hole, always gets a catch. But many many baits & scents will work. Best type of set IMO! Good luck.
there just dogs! i think they are so pretty! i love em! i could never hurt or kill any animal so beautiful! they have a bad reputation for doing what they've been doing before any of us ever showed up! just trying to stay alive

Is the mat you were kneeling on important, and where do get the scents?
I use it mainly to keep my clothes from getting completely disgusting and wet but it also doubled for scent control. I but all of my lures and scents at F&T Trading Post
Thanks bub, being a 2 year old video I wasn't sure if you would answer back so I appreciate it! Il subscribe to you! Have a good rest of your day from Ohio!
Long ways away bro! But yeah I reply to all of my comments no matter how old or new the video is. Goodluck out there and have a good day!
makes one wonder how the old trappers caught anything with no tools,,, hehehe
nice looking set, i love trapping coyotes
Instead i just love their neat fur and meat
Great video. Don’t listen to the haters👍👍
Awesome set going to have to try on my line this thanks for sharing
That will catch UM , good set.
AMAZING!!!!!!!
Have you tried drilling at a 45 degree angle?
Learning here. New to coyote trapping ! What does the poly fill under the pad do?
Keeps dirt from going under the trap so that the trap will fire!
Really appreciate the response. I’m working on catching some. They are smart.
Absolutely! Good luck on catching them. If you have anymore questions just ask!
If you have any suggestions on lures or bait for the sets. I’m all ears. Tryna absorb as much info as possible.
I’m looking up the products you used. I’m gonna try some of those.
Just had a coyote come running through my yard in suburbia today. It's clearly eating well, or it would have snagged on my chickens as they ran away from it. This trap doesn't work at my house, but it'll certainly work about 2 miles away.
Easy set, big money maker. You did well.
@Papi Kink yeah why not? Beats picking up cans. He did a good job. Taught many people how to work. Laborer is worthy of his wages.
More explanation would help a lot. Like, what trap? What was that chain setup you pounded in to the ground? I'm from red dirt part of the country, grew up hunting and have a good grasp on mechanics but I think I have more questions after watching this lol
Same here I need info from beginning to end
MB 550 2 coil offset jaw, Fox hollow earth anchor
Awesome video. This guy is very good. Canada hates coyotes , they kill too many deer, turkeys rabbits and deer that we like to eat. Thanks
Where did you get the auger and what size is it round
that Cavens stuff smells so foul, it's amazing you can spoon it in without gagging
What do you do if you trap a dog? Have coyotes in my property, but on camera I had also seen several dogs walking by. Thanks
I have a video on this on my channel!! Approach the dog with caution, I would recommend removing the dog from the trap with a catchpole and then safely releasing it. But PLEASE be careful!!!
Great video! What length is that auger bit?
These traps are not going to break a hand or just GO off bc you touch it..Then again if you are scared you're probably not or should not be trapping. So many times I've forgot a light & had to re-set in the dark; no problem! If you trap long enough it will happen but we're not scared of it! 😁
How long does it usually take to catch a coyote from the day you put it in the ground to the day you catch one
Just depends on location and how often coyotes frequent the area. May take a couple of days, but it also could take a week
great videos man, sent you a question on IG
Beautifully set up man, is it only good for one time use or can you set it up at one hole multiple of times
Either way works great!
@@CarolinaCoyote alrighty man thnx I was js worried I'll have to move it every time
What inch drill bit do you use
I have a 1” and a 3” drill bit so that I can have a little bit of diversity in my sets. The 3” works wonders for getting stakes out of the ground!!
@@CarolinaCoyote I just got a Stalker 3” auger and bought the Kobalt 24v drill you were using after finding out my Dewalt 20v wouldn’t turn it. I’m north of Raleigh where you located? Red clay is a killer!
Great video and I'm a new subscriber. Where can I get them auger bits?
F&T Trading Post!! I primarily run the 3inch bit but I do have a 1.5” just to keep it optional
You can drive a stick in the ground and wiggle it round and round to get the same hole. You want have to worry with the drill.
what county are you in?
There were Coyote in a Greenway near my home in Minnesota. Are they a nuisance, or is their fur useful? I mean why trap them?
Here in NC most of the farms that I trap have an issue with the coyotes killing their livestock. You can sale the fur after trapping them as well
They kill everything. they find.
great video.love thats cavens stuff.i do better on top dog here in missouri
Absolutely not. You can always change the appearance of the set and catch them!!
@@CarolinaCoyote I'm kinda pumped to get the last handful that are too smart to come to a call
@black_sheep_fab9411 I have a feeling you’ll enjoy trapping them more than shooting them
Nice , do you have a link for the bait that you put in the hole ?
About to be putting out a video about EVERYTHING that I use! Stay tuned!
@@CarolinaCoyote I hope I get it . I have bunch coyotes . They got a dog few years back and they trying again
Can you just mix the lure scent into the bait scent since they both go in the same hole or can they tell somehow the difference? Thanks man.
Don’t mix the 2 together. You may want to use a different mixture on than those 2 on the next set! Plus, one scent may overpower the other!
@@CarolinaCoyote understand now, thanks man
the way I make my dirt hole sets...
Do you think the shock springs are worth it sir thanks in advance
I absolutely do. They make it more animal friendly and also help prevent pull outs on some toe catches
, me and my first beginner Trapper what should I do
Great video, What trap do you use?
MB550 and Duke 550
Excellent well explained video. I've been educated in a short amount of time. What is that white stuff you buy from Walmart? What purpose does it serve? Also, we have fox in my area that I do not want to kill. Can you recommend a video on how to release unwanted animals that have been caught? Thanks..!
The white stuff is pollyfill or pillow cushion. I use it to put it under the pan so that dirt doesn’t keep the pan from firing. Some people use pan covers, but I don’t like them.
@@CarolinaCoyote Thanks.! Plus I have watched several of your videos now of removing the coyotes from the traps, so that is answered as well.
Get you a choke stick to get them out the trap.
@@CarolinaCoyote good tutorial.
Folks that have never trapped in red clay have no clue. It’s like concrete.
We got a ton of it here. Add in some roots and rocks and it's hell. You hold that drill tight with two hands or it will breal your wrist.
I’m looking for tips on how to do it in the mountains of Pennsylvania, nothing but rocks as big as car hoods and as small as basketballs
Me, an Arizonan: *laughs in caliche
Tyler Singleton yeah y’all know what it’s like. 👍
Good luck!
I'll have to try that out. Good video man
Show me videos of Trappers being trapped by their own traps and found dead half a chewed up by Coyotes that's what I want to see
@@hueyh9773 that doesn't happen
Lol I totally would punch that pan and trap myself!
That red clay is pansy soil. There is no drilling holes like that or pounding stakes in the rocky ground around here.
Womp womp womp
What do you do with them? You can hunt them.
How do you dispose of the coyote afterwards?
I give them to fox pins!
@@CarolinaCoyote we have mostly fox, only few coyotes. Is the 550 overkill for a fox? You video was awesome!
No it’s definitely not overkill
@@CarolinaCoyote cool. I have some 750's,. Caught a few beavers . The 750 is no joke.
Money wise. ##. 2. For fox.
Polyfueld, Polyfilled? Is what?. Not familiar with that. What does it do?
Pollyfill. It’s pillow stuffing. I use it under my trap pan instead of using pan covers. My catch percentage went up drastically when I made this change!
@@CarolinaCoyote thnks after i thought about it a min I knew. Jst never heard it called that.
Good looking set
Yes sir what did you bye at Walmart I did understand you thanks
Polyfill is r Polly stuffing. It’s what I use under my trap pan
About the auger. I see those on Amazon going for about $20. Do you know if they will hold up in rough ground? I see no reference where you may have purchased yours or how sturdy it is. Thanks again.
www.fntpost.com/Products/Augers+Punches/Freedom+Brand+Dirt+Hole+Drill+Augers
My 2” auger is from F&T but my 3”is from Tom Stalker. They both will hold up. The drill he is using is a good drill even for the 3”. That cheap auger you see on Facebook ads is for planting bulbs in potting soil.
You can take a small piece of pipe or a limb. Drive it in the ground. Twist it round and round and get the same hole. Better than a drill
Barbaric
I learned something today. How to dig a hole with a hammer 🔨
and the portable drill,,,, hehehhee
Every plumber keeps a clawhammer when digging
How many Raccoons do you get by mistake ?
Not too many. You’ll catch them occasionally in fields and road beds. You’ll catch more coons in the woods than you will in the fields/road beds.
You behind a chicken house?
Get you some small angle iron about two feet long. Burn or drill a hole in the end. It makes great stakes.
I'm sure that works and it makes your set look all pretty and all that but it's really unnecessary for all that digging and your hole don't need to be but about two or three inches deep and you don't need but a drop of food about the size of the end of a qutip
Then don't watch his videos short bus! If you think you can do it better than by all means create your own CHANNEL and get off his nuts.
So does the hole represent an animal den or are you trying to make it look like another coyote has been trying to dig something out already?
Mostly animal hole. It just triggers natural instinct & curiosity, yotes, fox, & raccoons will hit a hole set like this!! I've caught mice & put them in the hole, always gets a catch. But many many baits & scents will work. Best type of set IMO! Good luck.
Depends on the situation and location of the set. But the short answer is BOTH!👌
there just dogs! i think they are so pretty! i love em! i could never hurt or kill any animal so beautiful! they have a bad reputation for doing what they've been doing before any of us ever showed up! just trying to stay alive
Where at in Carolina you at?
I’ve had 15 sets out across 30 acres for a month and have only caught 2 opossum. Dirt hole sets and bait is stolen every noght
How deep is your bait hole? Sounds like it’s not deep enough
