The gas builds up and then, due to the heat, erupts, producing a liquid highly concentrated in salt, known as "brine". Brine is heavier than sea water and eventually accumulates at the bottom of the sea(it isn't just in the gulf of mexico, but it's one of the brine lakes we know of.) Nothing to do with salt water seeping into anywhere.

There's a species of muscles/molluscs that survive there, right on the edges of the lake. They turn the toxins in to proteins therefore survive in that harsh environment
