  • This session focuses on a critical analysis of the sociocultural aspects of the Kashmir conflict. Through an art exhibition & documentary screening, it serves to record silent Kashmiri voices and reflect on resilience while divulging overlooked costs of postcolonial nationalism.
Referring back to historic Map Shawl of Kashmir (circa 1860), it draws parallels between a militant-turned-craftsman’s personal journey within the broader context of Kashmir.
Kashmir Kollective is an independent group co-founded by Sidra Khawaja & Zafeer Butt that aims at humanizing the complex socio-political and cultural aspects of the Kashmir conflict in South Asia- a dynamic and volatile residue of the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent. Through exhibitions & screenings, the collective focuses on devising an alternative discourse as well as a constructive course of actions, thus reimagining an alternate peaceful future in the light of cultural and artistic traditions of the state.
    Artists Bio:
    ● Sidra Khawaja is an interdisciplinary Kashmiri artist-designer. She employs a critical approach to investigate indigenous objects, symbols, food culture, rituals & communal practices of the region; extrapolating them to relate their vernacular visual language to the contemporary issues surrounding Kashmir. Her practice serves to record silent Kashmiri narratives and issues surrounding identity and representation, while divulging the overlooked cost of postcolonial nationalism.
    ● Zafeer Buttt is a multidisciplinary visual artist & filmmaker. He has a bachelor’s degree in film and television from the National College of Arts, Lahore (Pakistan). He has made short films, documentaries, video art, music videos, and theatre plays, representing the state of Kashmir at various international festivals in the United States, China, and India. His film ‘LOUG - THE PEOPLE’ has goten special recognition in over six countries. He conducts workshops on screenwriting, film acting, and film direction for underprivileged students of digital media.

People in POK are longer kashmiri because their new generation speaks URDU, they don't know Kashmiri.. Indian Kashmiris speak kashmiri, they are real Kashmiris..

What is Urdu word for "Tuesday"?
In ancient Indian language, Mangal is world for Tuesday. Ramayan says Mangal bhavan amangal haari for Lord Ram.. Here Mangal means auspicious..

Excellent discussion. Quite enlightening. But empty chairs and sparse attendance is surprising. Their ideas, their dreams, aspirations, objectives and passion is amazing. I wish them great success. A word of caution. Artists don't govern a state, politics and politicians do. These two dreamers must temper their dreams with hard reality. Another aspect they miss is post Aud 2029 Kashmir landscape has been changing not just rapidly but radically. The massive infrastructure development will accelerate Economic growth and resultant prosperity in Indian Kashmir will result is deep assimilation hetherto unimaginable. Sheer disparity in wealth and development in Indian Kashmir will leave Azad Kashmir way behind. The pipe dream of Aazadi will lose its appeal.

Unfortunately, J&K was never self sufficient either economically or financially. Tourism was the only Industry which required a cosmopolitan Society. J&K became an Islam conscious Society. How can tourism flourish?
I see that the attendance is very sparse. Obviously, not much of an interest in Pakistan in Kashmir.
But the craftsmanship of the Kashmiris is world famous.

Jammu has no cultural (language , food etc) similarity with Kashmir valley. Ladakh falls under the same category. So, technically, they should be separated out from valley politics and should be made states. These area are very peaceful and has nothing to do with Kashmir politics.

    1. Kashmir name comes from the Sanskrit word, "Kashyapu" which was the dynasty that ruled there. It was before Islam came to subcontinent.
    2. It was a part of South Asia. Sharda Peeth temple, dating back to 300 BCE lies in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.
    3. In 1947, Pashtuns from Pakistan also waged war, and pillage on Kashmir.
    4. India does not take away ₹500 for every ₹100. That place only has had tourism and some horticulture as main economic activity.
    5. Ladakhi Buddhists, Jammu's Sikhs and Kashmiri Pandits are very happy being part of India. Even Shia Muslims are quite pro-India.
    6. Jawaharlal Nehru himself was a Kashmiri Pandit.
    7. Kashmiri language is very well preserved in Kashmir. There are many TH-cam channels of Indian Muslim Kashmiris.
    8. Kashmiris also work as civil servants all over India, in the Indian IT industry etc. They're not boxed in the valley only.

Indian Education System believes in teaching students in Mother Tongue. Yes, in their Mother Tongue. India might even resurrect Kashmiri script, which was suppressed by the influencers of a country carved out on the basis of Religion from a land mass. This Land mass is Bharatvarsh, which doesn't have a religion but has rich Melting Pot of Cultures.
Regarding Guests understanding of situation across the border, it smacks of their upbringing within the society.

Very good talk and it’s glad that people from the other side of the LOC are talking about Kashmir as well.
It was very sad to see that there was not even one mention of the Tribal Invasion of 1947 which actually triggered a disaster later on. The Jammu massacre was a result of the Tribal invasion and everyone in Pakistan seems to completely ignore it.
Plus regarding settler colonialism I’m afraid it seems your relatives are not telling you the entire story. There’s not even a single inch of land that has been sold in Kashmir to non Kashmiris as settlers.
Yes, I agree that business projects are on the rise but compared to the so called Azad Kashmir there’s not even a single non Kashmiri who has bought a land or made a house in Kashmir.
Unfortunately the documentary wasn’t shown in the video but I hope I get hold of it soon. I’m sure it will be fantastic 😊
