When Chris talked about having an actual human need to be praised and validated made so much sense ! I grew up discounting myself and my reality and am really working on understanding and releasing that pattern. I think I need to ask the people who love me to reflect back to me what's good about me. It's like permission or something. Ha❤ ty Irene and Chris!

Hi Irene, I really enjoyed this interview. I like the way you and Chris shifted the intention from 'healing trauma' to being in a state of embodiment, life force energy and expression. That was really cool. It got me thinking about my own intentions with learning and healing, and how I also needed to shift my intention from learning this stuff to avoid the struggles stored trauma causes in life, towards an intention of building up my embodied life force expression and resilience. SO cool. Thank you again. 😊

Really enjoyed this conversation and it was very timely for me personally, thank you! Learning the difference between awareness and attention and how the focus of attention can assist with intention was a wonderful distinction. I was very enlightened, and have been pondering Chris’ point on developing intentions focusing on what you want instead of setting an intention focused on what you don’t want. It seems knowing what you don’t want is helpful to inform or inspire setting the intention, but to develop a specific intention focusing on what you want to move towards makes so much sense. It allows for attention to be more-focused and provides a narrow, forward-facing, clear, and direct path guided by positivity instead of a wider path using extra energy to evaluate things through a negative-based lens and having to alternate concentration and attention looking in many more directions, mainly backwards and forwards. Great content, thank you!

Hi! Great episode! I’m still listening, but around 26:53 there is mention of an attention researcher on the Joe Rogan podcast and it was mention the link to the episode would be listed, but I’m not seeing it. Would it be possible to get the researcher’s name or the podcast link? Thank you!

the "intention" Directs the "attention".... A clear and strong intention gives and directs a powerful attention.

I don't believe it is wise to declare mindfulness apps categorically unhelpful in the healing process, because some people are coming from such dysregulation that an hourly reminder to check in with their body might be a necessary step on their healing journey. I think it is more useful to think of it from a harm reduction perspective. They may need it at first, but will hopefully leave it behind once they cultivate the procedural memory. In the meantime, they are reducing harm by using an app or reminder.
You mention that we all have been trained in unhealthy ways that have disconnected us from our inner knowing - I think its important to call out the systems of oppression that are behind this training (capitalism, patriarchy, colonialism, etc.).
Ultimately the process of self healing is radical in that one cannot heal within our oppressive systems and therefore must, at some stage in the process, rebel against those systems. One cannot live authentically while also complying to society's demands - society has created this collective trauma and therefore one cannot fully heal without changing society.

I agree , The systems of oppression must be acknowledged for exactly what it does and doesn't do, for recovery, closure, and healing trauma crime victims, like myself. Thank you for your insights and bringing this to the conversation. It's much appreciated.

This has just reduced me to tears and left me feeling totally demoralised and shamed. I am new to SBSM this year and every time I lay to do one of Irene’s exercises/practices my intention is to heal, to restore my nervous system and this has made me feel like I’m doing it ‘all wrong’ and I will never heal with that intention.I’m in constant excruciating gut pain day in and day out, my gut brain axis has stopped working, of course I want to get out of pain and heal myself/heal my traumas. I’m now left feeling hopeless. I don’t think this was a very helpful, clear or easy to understand interview for the hundreds of very vulnerable followers of Irene’s and has made me feel that my intention alone is now going to prevent SBSM from helping me regulate. I love all of Irene’s work and all her interviews but this one has had a really detrimental affect on me as someone who’s mind is scattered, depressed and finds it hard to motivate to do anything never mind now having the extra worry that my intention is ‘all wrong’ and will just keep me stuck. I’m left feeling what’s the point in diligently practicing every day.

      You will be fine :-)
practice on and on. it really takes time :-)
i did SBSM myself, and will do it again in autumn.
the point is that your body wants your atttention, loving kindness and presence without changing it. like being with a child :-)
also check out Tara Brach, shes doing wonderful talks and meditations.
also therapy, sessions with an SE practicioner can really help, all the best for you

@@trudygriggs2318 Irene is one of MANY, MANY different mind-body practitioners out there. Doesn't mean she's right or the others are wrong, etc.. I think the main thing to remember is to be EASY with yourself. Give yourself permission to stop and just do nothing at times. Your comment above is LOADED with WORRY. Which I totally understand because I'm coming from that place as well. But the more I see it in others, the more I realize how much I've spent waaaaaay too much time wondering if I'm good enough, if I'm doing "it" right, or right 'enough'. I am. And you are too. Give yourself a break. Or a thousand breaks...and you'll be okay. :)

Love all your videos. I have a very big startle/fear reaction during the night. Especially if my partner moves or makes a noise on bed, even far away noises outside. (This has only been happening recently) I did used to have panic attacks but not for a while now, since I sat with the feelings. But I am at a loss with what to do...if I leave the room and go next door I relax...(I don't want to spend my life being nervous of going to sleep)I have a lot of early trauma, being scared at night and being beaten and sent to sleep. What can I do to ease this? Is it true that this is survival energy trying to leave my body? Will being more active during the day help? I thought I saw a video Irene had done where she mentions this but I can't seem to find it.

Hi Lori G, Jen here from Team Lyon. When we wake in the night and feel a lot of sympathetic activation, this can be a sign of a survival response showing up to express and complete.
Sometimes it can be helpful to be active during the day, and sometimes it can also be helpful to move when you wake in the night - this could be by getting up and physically moving or by moving your feet and legs in bed as if we were walking or running. Sometimes turning towards things that are settling and soothing can be helpful too. I'll link to one of Irene's related practices.
It might also be helpful to remember that when we have early/developmental trauma, healing is a a process that typically happens over time. This will likely help with the experience you describe. I'll link to Irene's free Healing Trauma video training in case you'd like to learn more.

IRENE, for your knee look up "dmso Amandha vollmer" and dr bergman "knee regeneration" on odysee.
It's so great to show people that they need to change their perception of who they are- bringing back attention to the body and sensations ends up helping you know what to intend at every moment of your life. It's such a simple thing but does wonders.

I wish your videos were a LOT shorter. They're very helpful, but even those of us who are very sick, don't have the time -- because we don't have the ENERGY -- to listen to something so long. Please try to make them shorter. Twenty minutes, or even 30...but not 1 1/2 hours. You'll reach a LOT more people...

I find it useful to listen when I’m having difficulty sleeping. I put it at a volume that requires slight effort of focus to hear what’s being said, then as I eventually fall asleep, and my focus relaxes, the talking becomes just a gentle stream of sound. Irene’s voice is very soothing. The long videos are actually what I love for this purpose, and I can listen to them over and over.
I also listen while I’m awake, getting ready for work, or walking my dog, etc. Just to sit and focus entirely on a 1-2 hr video is simply too much for me, as well. ❤. But, I personally appreciate those really long videos.
