    About Behind the Riff:
Hear the story behind your favorite riffs from some of your beloved artists as they sit down with Jackson. With every great riff comes a great story.
    About Jackson:
Jackson began back in the late 1970s, when heavy music experienced a flamboyant and virtuosic resurgence in popularity and a small Southern California guitar repair shop became the epicenter of a new level of shred-approved excellence. Ever since then, Jackson guitars have been universally lauded as the metal guitars; the shred machines-highly original high-performance instruments of distinctive style and formidable substance. From metal’s chart-topping peaks to its darkest recesses, for discerning guitarists all over the globe, Jackson is the only way to go.

When I first heard about Misha and Periphery, I assumed that Misha is a guitarist like Tosin or Tim Henson, someone who is extremely proficient in theory and technicality. To find out that he’s not good with that stuff is mind blowing, but comforting to someone like me, who doesn’t know the first thing about that stuff

    • @denniskielton2447

the thing is, he DOES know it, he just doesn't know the names for it or how to describe it that well. But for someone who "doesn't know theory" he did a decent job at it. From teaching guitar for 15-16 years now I can tell ya for sure, pretty much everyone knows music theory a LOT better than they realize. Very rarely am I teaching people concepts they had no idea about, usually they're like "ahhhh that makes so much sense." It's confusing, it's enlightening. Once you study it (ESPECIALLY if you've been playing awhile already) you juts start to realize you've already been doing all of it for years. Then you start to see it in other peoples songs and realize exactly how they're built, and can recreate it for yourself. 90% of songs adhere to the same formula, that's what makes metal so special, same with jazz. It breaks the formula every chance it gets. Periphery actually has a lot of common theory in their songs though, that's why they sound so relatable and have become so successful. They use chord progressions and melodies you'd find in pop songs, but make them super heavy and complex. But don't be scared dude jump in it, you'll most likely realize you're a lot further ahead than you think! Perfect example, Misha did this "by ear." Because he, like most of us, has heard so much music throughout his entire life that he can tell when things sound wrong or when they sound "right." So he definitely knows music theory, he just doesn't have the words to describe it, yet. Tosin says the same thing about not knowing theory but he can name all his intervals and play them anywhere on the front bored and actually took a year of music school. If you know music at all, you know music theory. Music theory is just the study of music. You can tell if something sounds happy or sad right? So change the word happy to major, & the word sad to minor; and check it out, looks like you know music theory haha. It's really that simple don't be scared!

      Technically however.

@@graysoul4432 as a guitarist that does know a fair share of theory. It is a good tool to have for creating music and having a map so to say. But knowing all the theory in the world won't necessarily make you a good song writer. That comes from the soul and playing what sounds great in your head. Dimebag, Dave Mustaine, George Lynch, Misha, Chuck Shuldiner. The list goes on forever of guitarist that claimed to not be very knowledgeable about music theory but are top teir song writers because they have a great ear and play what sounds good in their head. They are very creative and innovative.
