I have only been in this world for 65 years and Pat Metheny has graced more than 50 years of it...along with Lyle Mays...RIP Mr. Mays, you are immortal in my world.
A new Pat Metheny release is like welcoming a old friend you haven't seen for years ., and you feel like you can pick up where you left off, just from hearing the first few moments of this musical Magic
I love how you put that, welcoming an old friend indeed. This is truly truly magical. I am a life long Metheny head (first show, As Falls Wichita, circa 1980, Denton TX) and to my ears this the best thing I've heard in a long time. Super stoked to see him (in this trio?) in Boulder this fall. Speaking of As Falls this tune brings me back to that amazing, idiosyncratic album...also a trio, no? Cheers!
I'm only 30, but followed most of Pat's releases in my lifetime... he NEVER failed to blow my mind in every new record in a different way too. One of the most important modern artists for sure! Greeat record!
Damn, I was thinking the exact same thing!! And I don't think I've even heard this piece before! AFW,SFWF is among my favorite PM cuts. So much going on, yet it all fits together so seamlessly - one of those pieces you HAVE to hear uninterrupted...
I've loved Pat Metheny since 1985 when I saw and heard him for the first time here, in Valencia, Spain. Since then, I have all his records and have seen him more than 12 times. He is the soundtrack of my life.

Back when my fellow band buddy dropped the stylus on that vinyl and Phase Dance began...a whole new universe opened up...what a fantastic journey it has been....
That's Ecological Jazz...inspired by our Sacred Mother Nature, and the Infinite Universe, and that's where I go whenever I hear his Magical Soundscapings !...
Pat is my favorite!! The Best! I would like to recommend that all of the people in this comment section to check out the most phenomenal project (to me) that I've ever heard and seen by this Genius, The Orchestion Project!
I saw Metheny in 78 ish when he was touring his PMG (white) lp. Great night. Just saw him about a week ago in Phoenix. Even better night. And this song was spellbinding.
Nice one Mike, great to know this...amazing band here and chart too...been following Pat since White Album...knew of Lyle back when he was at North Texas State Uni One o'Clock Lab Band....
I can finally feel it. Pat Metheny is back on the roots of his group; The Pat Metheny Group. From the self-titled debut to From This Place. This one right here sounds better like Minuano, Last Train Home, James, and Yolanda, You Learn. Pat Metheny is one of the passionate jazz guitarists of our time. If Lyle Mays smiling down at him, his music and legacy will change everything. I ain't gonna lie to you fans of Pat Metheny, that's how his music rejuvenates from generation to generation.
Shawn: This is so right on and true! Thank you! As you said, Pat Metheny is definitely one of the most imaginative and creative musicians on the planet!😀 He consistently has released exciting and engaging art for more than 40 years--though it's difficult to believe that it's been such a stretch of time! He has a unique ability to craft these aural landscapes that suggest taking the listener on an almost endless journey. He takes daring musical risks ("Song X" album) and paints beautiful sonic pastels such as 1992's "Secret Story (from his individual Pat Metheny solo work). As others have said, the late great Lyle Mays definitely would be proud of Mr. Metheny's continuing path of excellence and restless innovation as Mr. Mays was the co-nucleus of the PMG frontier! Thank you, innovator Pat Metheny, God bless the brilliant Lyle Mays, and God bless all! Thank you.🎼🎵🎸🎹🎶
Saw Pat and Side Eye at Monterey Jazz Festival #64 on September 24, 2021. Attention everyone: Make it a priority to get to the nearest and soonest available show! Travel if necessary. Do not miss. Note: We are all missing Lyle, a huge loss for sure. But give James Francies his due, he is an unbelievable talent and could well be the next Oscar Peterson. As you listen to his solos, please know that he is also carrying the bass line the entire time. Just wow.
I've been a Pat fan since "Watercolors" saw him at the Syracuse Jazz Fest twice ,he's a guitar virtuoso. There are times you remember later in life that you hold dearly ,you can't explain to anyone that wasn't there. !
I love this tune already, ultra melodic groove, ultra modern, Synths, EP, Sequencers, Orchestrion, huge sound for a Trio. In some ways you don't think it is Live as the playing and production are so flawless. Listened to this on (not the last) train home from work, always a joy to hear new music from Pat. Thanks, Daniel.
@@HopeIanHope Your opinion. That's one of the things that makes Pat great, expanding the possibilities of the guitar and the sonic space. Beacon Theatre ticket purchased! Looking forward to seeing my friend Pat once again. Shaking his hand and getting his autograph (on A Map of The World CD cover), at J&R Music World in Manhattan, over two decades ago, was one of the highlights of my life! 🙂
I've been to several Pat Metheny concerts (with different line-ups) - the first time was in Chicago in 1979. Over 40 years later (omg!) - and I still remember that night. What an amazing artist he is!
I think Lyle would be happy to know PM is still creating such beautiful and mind clearing music (stole that from someone here in this chain and Sorry, not Sorry I did that....LOL). Count me in with those who consider his music a part of the sound track of their lives. Have been a fan for years....errrr decades and have seen him perform live half a dozen time. PMG never disappoints, never!! Rest in Peace Lyle Mayes, you were taken from us far too soon.
This new music from PM is extraordinary. He has always pushed the envelope of style, tempo and composure while retaining a unique sound. What I really enjoy about Pat is his continual exploration into music and not catering to the media or masses. He has always blazed his own trail through the years and continues to do so. I have enjoyed Pat for over 35 years and it just keeps getting better. Here's to many more of savoring your musical journey!
How does one express gratitude for decades, of bliss and happiness shared by many, and given from a world class musician who brings to us other world class musicians for our enjoyment, Thank You Pat Metheny for a beautiful concert here in Albuquerque, NM at the Hispanic Cultural Center. Big love!!

So true! I do the same! I tried introducing my son in law and he said he’s not into lead guitar! I’m sorry, have you listened to his music? He’s so much more than that! Some people just can’t appreciate genius when they hear it! 😉
Pat always talks about the difficulty of coming up with song titles but he always hits it out of the park when he comes up with a name for a song. And the musical atmosphere always matches the title perfectly.👍
Just went Pat Metheny concert in here LA tonight! Best performance as usual. New keyboard guy looks and sounds like genius. Drumming is so powerful. Pat’s ballad solo made me cry…!!
For us baby boomers we love that movie theme sound he has done for the past 35 years. It creates all kinds of nostalgic feelings of the cool 60s espionage and drama and romance movies! Just what we need to get through a pandemic. Like Seal used to say....at times neither the lyrics nor title have to make sense just as long as the music can elevate you to another dimension.
In the late 70s and early 80s, when copyright laws were treated less respectfully, it was not unusual in Winnipeg to hear Pat Metheny clips used as backing tracks for local radio commercials, promos and show themes. I first became aware of Pat as an artist when I borrowed Offramp (the LP, of course) from the public library in 84.
'From This Place' marked a return to greatness of Pat Metheny's greatest works, Side-NYC V1.IV will take everything to the next level, with new material and reworks of some classics. I just can not wait, 'IT STARTS WHEN WE DISAPPEAR' is just the prelude atmo.
So happy to see this! It broke my heart when we lost Lyle Mays last year. I’m sure it broke Metheny’s as well. I saw them in Clearwater in 87, and will see them again in Clearwater next February! I cannot wait! The best jazz band ever.
500 hundred years from now someone will find Pat Metheny in some archive somewhere, become intrigued and go down that rabbit hole, and reintroduce this genius to the world once more. Or maybe he and his music and the wonderful musicians he plays with will never disappear from our radar.
Thank God for Pat Metheny I've been listening to your music since 1978 and your music always help me with my homework when I'm studying and relaxing. Thank you for your music and creativity sincerely a true fan since the 70's and beyond
I loved his Group era most of all. And this sounds like something that would be played in a Group set, so that's good! I think this is Pat's first release since the passing of Lyle Mays. To me, the best Metheny works are always the ones where Lyle's influence was very strong.
I saw a live "side eye" in Japan. The newer generations of musician was full of energy and a wonderful performance. And I felt Pat was absorbing that energy and changing himself. I was waiting to hear the performance at that time again.
It sounds like an homagge to Lyle Mays...without any doubt, his spirit is arround this composition. Listening "Before you Go" from Street Dream , 1998 Lyle´s album....
...wow -i was just scrolling through the comments thinking exactly the same thing...i shall now pop along to Amazon and buy the CD, i know i'm going to like the rest of it...some music just fits...I miss Lyle...
Mr Matheny and team have no equal in this genre, sincerely. We mortals are unbelievably enriched. We are all Matheny Trekkies! Our trajectories are plotted by their rockets.
The pat me5heny group is and was the pinnacle of modern times music. I studied jazz in cologne at the conversatory and listened to a lot of different things, including Cage, Glass, Dvorak, Bach, Metallica, Beatles, Erykah Badu, E. S. T. and analyzed all those in detail. While they are all great in their own respect I came to the conclusion that nothing moves me more than the group and that is the primary purpose of music.
This is from the September 13th 2019 show at Sony Hall in NYC which I was at... the drummer is Marcus Gilmore NOT Joe Dyson here... and yes that is the Orchestrion added to the ensemble... just like when Pat used the Synclavier for composing and as an instrument for backgrounds the sound is unmistakable.
Pat has stated, "I'm not really good with song titles. I could call it My Dog Spot." Well, this one is undeniably compelling and thought-provoking, Pat. And, the track sounds good!
I caught Pat's show in Lincoln, NE on Monday night. My dumb luck found me in a city with very few jazz afficianados. Translate: Lucky me. Front row seats. Pat and the guys were like they were in my living room. A magical two hours. He played a lot of his catalogue, albeit updated, different, with new players.
Thank you. Beautiful expected Pat Metheny sound. Feels unexpectedly beautiful. Each time. It is like opening pandora’s box. You know it will start and pull you in. But you still fall for it and get in this beautiful trouble. As i am slowly disappearing here it starts again. Dear Pat signed my tshirt after a concert in istanbul. I am still going with you.
Eternity is always new, but it only starts when we dissapear. We are still on our last train home, reading a letter from home, inside with a secret story knowing: the truth will always be! allways and forever! And when i am gone, please, tell her you saw me! and look ahead, Antonia.

Another Metheny masterpiece.
What a wonderful way to start the day! Thank you Pat! You've made many people happy this morning! 🌏✌️❤️🎶
¿¿ as fantastic as ever ¿¿
So happy to see this! It broke my heart when we lost Lyle Mays last year. I’m sure it broke Metheny’s as well. I saw them in Clearwater in 87, and will see them again in Clearwater next February! I cannot wait! The best jazz band ever.
500 hundred years from now someone will find Pat Metheny in some archive somewhere, become intrigued and go down that rabbit hole, and reintroduce this genius to the world once more. Or maybe he and his music and the wonderful musicians he plays with will never disappear from our radar.
Think he'll not go underground...
This is a great day! A new PM composition and a new Lyle Mays recording announcing today too!!
Which lyle mays recording ? Sorry but I don’t understand. Thanks
@@billcharliebrown3135 Do a search. Lyle Mays’ new release, Eberhard is out August 27, 2021.
Thank you for the heads up! Just pre-ordered from his website.
R.I.P. Lyle... we miss you.
Thank God for Pat Metheny I've been listening to your music since 1978 and your music always help me with my homework when I'm studying and relaxing. Thank you for your music and creativity sincerely a true fan since the 70's and beyond
Great job. Regards from Poland.
A cool breeze is blowing through my brain... I must be flying... 🌄🦅☁
Last Train Home is still one of my favorite songs
Mine is Phase Dance
Those 2 are my favorites plus CHRIS
Pat Metheny is awesome. Best thinking music on the planet. He's helped me to think during many of my courses. His music is soul music.
....word sister....for me since 1977....
Ears and heart explode with joy at unheard Pat music. Love.
Pat's music is from another realm. He is , to me, THE genius of jazz.
A purely magical journey...
Indeed...
The G.o.a.t is Pat Metheny!!!!!!!!!
DIVINE
I loved his Group era most of all. And this sounds like something that would be played in a Group set, so that's good!
I think this is Pat's first release since the passing of Lyle Mays.
To me, the best Metheny works are always the ones where Lyle's influence was very strong.
'From This Place' came out just after dear Lyle's passing...Linda Oh, Gwilym Simcock, and Antonio Sanchez taking it places with Pat on that release...
I saw a live "side eye" in Japan. The newer generations of musician was full of energy and a wonderful performance. And I felt Pat was absorbing that energy and changing himself. I was waiting to hear the performance at that time again.
I'm beyond the solar system riding on the waves of Pat's music, but I shall return Nov.13, 2021to witness brilliance at the Strathmore.
Voyage, voyage ! Endless horizons
It sounds like an homagge to Lyle Mays...without any doubt, his spirit is arround this composition. Listening "Before you Go" from Street Dream , 1998 Lyle´s album....
You
...wow -i was just scrolling through the comments thinking exactly the same thing...i shall now pop along to Amazon and buy the CD, i know i'm going to like the rest of it...some music just fits...I miss Lyle...
You’re absolutely right🎹❤️!
You know what...?! It does!
Lyle.... my, oh my, what a gift to humanity... and yes, i feel his spirit in this music ... sounds very much like "before you go"
Mr Matheny and team have no equal in this genre, sincerely. We mortals are unbelievably enriched. We are all Matheny Trekkies! Our trajectories are plotted by their rockets.
His music is a state of consciousness of the future.

Damm I thought I was the only one that felt that way
master piece God in heaven, Pat on earth! thanks !
Pat has stated, "I'm not really good with song titles. I could call it My Dog Spot." Well, this one is undeniably compelling and thought-provoking, Pat. And, the track sounds good!
The best!!!! Always and forever!!!!
Eternity is always new, but it only
starts when we dissapear.
We are still on our
last train home,
reading a letter from home, inside with a secret story
knowing: the truth will always be!
allways and forever!
And when i am gone, please,
tell her you saw me! and
look ahead,
Antonia.
A beautiful statement, using Metheny/Mays song titles...Really well done, thank you!
@@markfoster_mkfbass thank you :-)

Also, what I like about this song is that it has so many creative sound environments. Each minute of the song is like walking through a maze of rooms with different decorative arrangements. You almost get lost in the journey.
Well said.
Lyle Mays is probably one of the writers and keyboard player. He was SO creative! He's like a modern age Debusie.
