  • Colonel Assimi Goita, the leader of Mali’s military government, on Tuesday met his Burkinabe counterpart, Ibrahim Traore, in Ouagadougou to discuss diplomatic matters, including “reviewing the status” of “bilateral cooperation” between the two nations.
While delivering a joint press briefing in Burkina Faso’s capital, Goita said the two leaders "addressed key issues, particularly those related to security and economic development."
Burkina Faso and Mali both recently severed ties with France, their former colonial ruler.
The talks between Goita and Traore also explored how Burkina Faso and Mali can strengthen their ties with Russia, China and Turkey.
Both nations are considering hiring Russian mercenaries to help battle Islamic militants after falling out with Western partners.
