      A thing that many do not know:
      In practice all western fighers nowadays have ability to use pilot helmet HUDs and lock a target just by looking into it. This is considered a new feature however, "first seen" at the 2010s.
      However, the MiG-29 had both features already when it was commissioned, though the locking only worked with the R-27, which was a poorly working fail missile.

      @@KillerSniper55 Interceptors of the time were built specifically for speed, ceiling, and rate of climb at the expense of all other concerns. Midair refueling was in its absolute infancy and purebred interceptors, defending home air space, could reliably be sure that they'd only be flying to counter high altitude supersonic bomber threats. Irony is, the U.S. believed the MiG-25, in development, to be an aircraft more like the Su-27. The U.S. developed the F-15 in response, resulting in the Soviets developing the actual Su-27.

      It needs to be fast in order to run away when F-15 or F-16s show up.
      The MiG-25 was developed to intercept the SR-71 and failed every time.
      It is an interceptor that has done very little intercepting.
      It's a good-looking plane, no doubt.

      @@KillerSniper55 no actually it had a lot more issues than that, the MiG-25 was a very ineffective aircraft. Sure it could go Mach 3+ but only for a couple minutes max, and it would cause permanent damage to the engine and airframe, the engine usually had to be replaced once they landed. It also did not have the fuel capacity to work well, even going at a low cruising speed, it had a very low range. Not to mention that it turned like a boat.

    Some side notes to the video : 1) as you see there were no more piston-engined fighters after Mig-3. This is due to the fact that Mig-3 was overspecialised as a high-altitude interceptor, and was a relatively poor dogfighter. Throughout WW2 the Soviets have been very confined in resources, so the decision was made to abandon production and development of Migs and focus on that of Ilyushin IL-2 ground attack and Yakovlev Yak-3 fighter aircraft. 2) Mig-9 and Mig-15 have been developed and built when the Soviet jet engine R&D was in its infancy. Mig-9 engine was based on the reverse engineered BMW engines captured from the defeated Nazi Germany, and Mig-15 engine was based on Rolls Royce Nene engine purchased from the UK. 3) Mig-15 was developed with the threat of American B-29 bombers in mind, so it was optimised for shooting down large and tough aircraft (the use of 37mm cannon). As a side effect, it had a slightly poorer shooting accuracy than that of its counterpart, F-86 Sabre. 4) The picture of Mig-15 actually depicts Mig-15 Uti, the twin-seated trainer version of Mig-15. 5) Mig-27 is based on the same platform as Mig-23, in fact, it has originally been developed as a variant of Mig-23. 6) An interesting feature of Mig-23 and Mig-27 is a foldable ventral fin, which increases directional stability at high speed. 7) Mig-29 was actually never intended to counter F-15, Sukhoi Su-27 was. Mig-29 is a light fighter and was meant to fulfil the same role as F-16.

    • @babsrahman
      @babsrahman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The MiG-29 wasn't designed to fufil the same role as the F-16. That's another myth.
      The MiG-29 was designed as a short range interceptor aircraft directed by ground controllers.
      The F-16 was designed as a cost effective, lightweight multi role air superiority fighter and ground strike aircraft.

    • @romank4905
      @romank4905 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Babs Rahman you are clearly confusing it with Mig-25. Please go read Mig-29 design history. It was designed based on “Advanced Frontline Fighter” specification and acquired mostly by Soviet VVS (air force) and not PVO (air defence force). The plane was integrated with helmet mounted sights and dogfight missiles. Does such armament make any sense for an interceptor?

    • @babsrahman
      @babsrahman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@romank4905 My terminology was misleading. The MiG-29 is an air superiority fighter but its role was that of a short range frontline fighter jet guided by GCI, fire off its R-27 and then return to base. But it could also dogfight with its HMD, R-77 missiles and cannon should the need arise.
      Compared to the F-16, the MiG-29 had a shorter range and inferior situational awareness. It wasn't a datalinked multirole fighter jet like the F-16, at least not originally. They have different roles.
      My original point was that the MiG-29 and F-16 are not like each other, they had different missions. F-16 suited US offensive air warfare doctrine. The MiG-29 was a defensive fighter, guided by ground control to intercept incoming NATO aircraft.
      The F-15 and Su-27 were similar though.

In passing the sound barrier, all those sound waves build in front of the aircraft ... creating a spike in resistance to overcome (a real physical barrier of sorts). A plane that can break mach 1 in level flight can then-maintain that speed much more efficiently as it won't be pushing all of those sound waves in front.

      I guess it's Mig-15 Uti, a twin-seat fighter-trainer. And speaking about Bis, isn't it just a variant ? Then we would have ended up with all the variants of Mig-23, Mig-27, Mig-29 as well, and those are really really lot of. It would have been quite a burden for the author and quite a bore for the audience. And the flames... I don't see any

  • @otyliciu
    @otyliciu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    The MiG-21 might well out last most on the list in terms of remaining in active service. With modern technology becoming more compact, you do not need a 'larger' aircraft to have more power as was the trend for several design generations. Modern upgrades and rebuilds (MiG-21-2000 etc.) enable it to carry modern sensors and the latest in both Russian and western armament, making the MiG-21 a pseudo fourth gen' in terms of its capabilities (largely eliminating the incentive for current MiG-21 operators to buy entirely new aircraft to replace it).

    • @nrdy8221
      @nrdy8221 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      obviously? do you think the russian airforce would use yak 9s?

    • @otyliciu
      @otyliciu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@nrdy8221 Well, I did say "current MiG-21 operators" didn't I? A lot of its current operators wouldn't have even been able to afford the MiG-21 on their own except that large numbers were written of by the Russian Air Force and left with the various Soviet Socialist Republics in which they'd been based after the dissolution of the U.S.S.R. Those operators will likely be keeping their MiG-21 flying, through upgrades, for decades whereas the aircraft types in developed nations' service with continue to evolve. So, yes, the MiG-21 will probably out last many later aircraft in terms of how long it remains in active service "somewhere" in the world. Due to sanctions preventing the delivery of new military technology to Franco's regime, Spain was still flying the Messerschmidt Bf-109 as late as 1965.

      The MiG-31, while not as fast as the MiG-25, did not suffer all that great a "loss" of speed considering its primary mission changed completely. It is no longer concerned primarily with the threat of non-existent mach 3-capable bombers (XB-70) but rather, with its AESA radar, radar/weapons operator, and look-down/shoot-down capability (allowing it to see terrain-skimming targets even directly below it...a blind spot to most aircrafts' sensors), is tasked with the interception of submarine-launched cruise missile attacks coming in from the vast expanses of Russia's ice-locked North.
