Ok so the part where he explodes is because of the Flammable Gas rooms. There is a sign on some doors before you enter them with a flammable gas warning so that means if you pull out any open-flamed items (Items such as a lighter, candle, etc) will cause the gas to explode and kill you. So basically if you ignite anything while in the gas rooms, you will explode and die.

I have a theory. The stairs outside the lobby entrance will lead to the mines lobby. I had to use 110% of my brain to think of this. Might not be true but to me it makes sense kinda. What else would it be for?
