    Thank y you sir for a simple, honest lesson between "hardwood and softwood" cuttings. My wife's favorite for more than 20 years is the gardenia. We almost made it last year from beautiful 3 foot contantly blooming gardenia, and then we had a bad frost 1 week after the first frost and 1 week after we had a freeze warning and had just finished our portable 10 x 15 foot greenhouse . After the love and attention that I gave her plant, time was not on our side and we lost it and did not save any cuttings. This day I am going to take as many "reasonable cuttings" from a new "mother plant", which is full, healthy and producing buds. With your advice I will proceed with care and caution to propagate more gardenias. Thank you sir!

      Hi I am glad this video helped. Sorry to hear you lost your gardenia. If you can create a temporary tropical like microclimate zone indoor during winter, the plant will survive and thrive come spring. Do let me know if you are facing any problem during propagation time. Thank you and stay safe.

      Gardenia can grow well in any kind of low PH soil that is fertile and well-draining. I use rabbit manure and compost to make my soil fertile and coffee grounds to lower the PH. I have never tested with PH testing tools but what I am doing is working for me.

    Hi, i like your explanation. Useful indeed👍. Is it possible to leave cuttings in water until roots form. Also, you didnt mention about which fertilizer to use and feeding intervals. Thx and keep your videos coming.

    • @PlantZone
      @PlantZone  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi. Thank you. Yes you can leave the cuttings in water for rooting. However if you decided to use water as medium, the best would be semi-hardwood or hardwood cuttings. Softwood cuttings tends to rotten faster. I have been more successful rooting all my cuttings in soil compared to propagating in water. As for fertilizer, until the cutting is well rooted and transferred to larger polybag or pot, I won't give any fertilizer. After 3-4 weeks, once they are transferred to larger or bigger polybag, I give chicken manure and rabbit manure. IF you prefer chemical based fertilizer you can give Npk 15-15-15 once a month.

    Good day sir, I am successful in my gardenia plant. It's about 5 feet tall and flowers nicely. My question is: we have another gardenia plant (gardenia carinata), the one with yellow pinwheel flowers that are very fragrant. How do you propagate this? Is it the same as in your video? Thank you very much! -from the Philippines

    • @PlantZone
      @PlantZone  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. I believe the plant you are referring to is native Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia which is also known as Golden Gardenia, Kedah Gardenia as well as Cempaka Hutan. I have not attempted to propagate this plant before. But I think it is possible to use seeds as this is categorized as Angiosperms (Flowering Seed Plants) (Dicotyledon). I also think its possible to propagate this plant using stem cutting and air-layering method. As this tree can grow up to 15 meter tall, and if your tree is already tall, why not experiment. Try all the three methods. Do let me know what works. Thank you.

    Which month is the best to take a cutting ? In the uk it is august time at the moment

    • @PlantZone
      @PlantZone  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The best time to take gardenia cuttings for propagation is during the summer months, specifically from June to August. During this period, the plant is actively growing, and the new growth is more likely to root successfully. It's important to choose semi-hardwood cuttings, which are slightly mature but still flexible.

    • @heartbroken3350
      @heartbroken3350 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @PlantZone thanks ,if i have a very small plant can I still take a cutting?

    • @PlantZone
      @PlantZone  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, you can. But if it's too small you wouldn't be able to get many cutting. Best is to let it grow and let it have many branches before taking the cuttings.

      You need to prune the plant just before Spring and make sure the soil is acidic. You can buy acidic plant fertilizers. I had the same problem for two years but now my plant produces good blooms.

    What about indoor gardenia ???

    • @PlantZone
      @PlantZone  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gardenia needs plenty of sunlight for flowering. If you grow indoor, it might not flower or flower buds may drop. Unless that area indoor have direct sunlight for long hours. But if you want to propagate, the methods are same.
