- A C5B standing takeoff out of Afghanistan. Heavy weight with a high pressure altitude and high temp make for a long takeoff with a slow rate of climb. Enjoy the sound of the General Electric TF39 engines at very high power setting of 99.8% N1. These TF39 engines are being replaced by the boring CF6 GE engines on the C5. Enjoy the sound of the first high bypass turbofan made.

The best sounding engines was when we taxied from osan ab and left korea.

Nothing better in aviation then hearing a C5-A/B model at a heavy weight with the TF39 engines screaming defying gravity climbing out to reaching for the sky. Hoped you enjoy

I remember when I was 10 years old, I lived near Hill AFB in Utah. One day while I was in my room, I hear this sound that sounds like the Millennium Falcon taking off. I look out the window and several miles away I saw one of these monsters, way up in the sky. It was awesome.

My brain is struggling to comprehend the sheer size of that base.
I remember in 1969 stationed at Randolph AFB, Texas that we had the first C5A do a flyover our base. Back then, it was two tone colored and those drone sounds of the TF39 were stunning.
I will never get over the wonder of flight.

Yes, that's a crying shame about those TF39 engines being replaced by the CF6 GE engines. The TFs are what made the C-5As that famous and undistinguished sound during both takeoff and landing. I will surely miss it! Great video!

@@kevinporter6426 C5B's were built in the mid to late 80's. A modernization program was developed to upgrade the aircraft. As part of the upgrade a comprehensive Reliability Enhancement and Re-engining Program (RERP) was established to replace the TF-39's with the General Electric CF6-80C2-L1F commercial engines. These engines deliver 22% increase in thrust, 30% shorter takeoff roll, and 58% faster climb rate...allowing more cargo to be carried over longer distances. The RERP modified C-5A/B/C's became the C-5M. The TF-39 Faithful (myself included) lost the famous C5 whine...but the USAF got a longer lasting and better performing airlifter.

They sound so melodic, I can imagine what it would feel like if those TF39 were used on passenger aircrafts as well. In that case I wouldn't mind a 15h flight without inflight entertainment.. because these beasts are already enough entertainment!
We in fact, already have modern plane having similiar sound with this.
It called "Boeing 777"
While the modified CF6-80 engines have more power and burn less fuel, they also turn the C-5 into something that sounds like a 747-200B/300/400 at takeoff. I'm going to miss the loud "growl" of the front fans when the plane is coming at you and the loud whine as the plane flies away from you, characteristic of the TF39 engines.
Sacto1654 The 747 engines don't sound horrible (this is for the sadsacks abot no tf39s) the 747 engines don't sound horrible and it will shut up the old people about the tf39s

Well, the TF39's are in a museum because for these reasons: they burned a lot of fuel, required running at essentially full power for long periods when a loaded plane is taking off and quiet they aren't. Small wonder why the USAF rebuilt a number of C-5's into the C-5M configuration with essentially a military version of the CF6-80 engine.
Many a C-5 took off and landed at McClellan back in the day. Very distinct sound.

I still remember my first night of air Force basic training when one of these passed over lackland afb at about 1am. I had no idea what was going on. I woke up to that engine scream.
I heard these bad boys(living in Africa)when Bill Clinton came to South Africa and 4 C5s flew over at 4AM. Absolutely huge sound,could hear them spool up in reverse thrust for miles on landing,had a walkaround at the airbase in one of them,blew my mind as a kid. Cheers for the videos,pity they are being retired that growl the old TF39s make,is like the sound of a big old radial or a highly tuned v8 and is just music to my ears....
I love this view!!! You can see the wing start flying like 15 seconds before the actual lift off!! Also love how you described the new engines as "boring"!!
I agree they don't have that awesome screaming Electrolux demon vacuum sound! But,they'll help keep this amazing beast in the air for quite a while yet!

I flew out of Ramstein on Emergency Leave in Jan 78 (when they had a 25 ton limit) and most of the pax seats had been removed (there were 11 EL's on that flight) and once we reached cruise altitude the load passed out a bunch of blankets and pillows and we all crashed on the floor. I laid their feeling every movement of the plane and the whine of those engines soon had all of us to sleep. It was marvelous. Best flight ever. Retired USAF

Those TF39’s are the loudest hi bypass turbofans of all time.
Lol, Kandahar and Bagram are the "big cities" compared to where I was in 2009-2010. I was at a COP in the Paktya Province 2500 meters above sea level with 35" to 40" of snow on the ground. There was just enough room for a CH-47 and a CH-53. That place was so desolate it made Gilligan's Island look like Key West, LOL!!!! I understand why the AF upgraded to the "M" version but nothing compares to the Dolby Surround Sound of the "B", lol. That beautiful sound of a "four lane" highway spooling up, it's an awesome bird!!!!

Fantastic video! The TF-39 onboard videos are extremely hard to find. I'm surprised it is still in service. I remember growing up with these on base.
Nice I am glad you like it. I have more videos on my page and I will upload more soon. There are 55 c5's in service and 10 that are powered by the tf39s as of March 2016. In about a year there will be 0 tf39s in service as the c5 fleet gets upgraded with cf6 engines.

The C-141 Starlifter was powered by 4 PW TF33, the same which power the B-52H Stratofortress

I regularly revisit this video.. just to hear that BEAUTIFUL ATOT from 0:31-0:33 and the throttle down to a maximum duration, 5 minute TRT run of the TF39's. It never gets old.
Awesome, distinctive sound. You'd think that for the C-5M, they'd have someone play the TF39 sound clip over the cabin speakers during takeoff.
Reminds me so much of the first rb211s they used in the L1011s... but these TF39s... they're on another level. Have to hear it in person!
I like the older C5A screaming takeoff.
First, that is an ominous sounding buzzsaw noise and second, it's amazing how you got to fly inside the C-5 to get this capture this!

I love the whirr whirr of those early jumbo engines. First heard it on the 747s in the 70s. It does sound very powerful.
The C-5 has the best landing gear extension and retraction, but also the best engine roar
....BOY...THOSE are LOUD Engines.!..LOVE THE ROARING sounds.!
I had the proud pleasure of flying on one across the pond back in 90s for Blackhawk Down. I was the only squid on that mission. Took off with them 5 times and ended up in Mogadishu. That was an adventure to remember.

flew in the passenger compartment 19 hours non-stop once. They are loud, I used to see these fly over Lackland AFB when Kelly AFB was open.

Man those engines are strapped to the boards. Back in 1972 I was doing Wheels watch at NAS cubi Point Subic Bay. I was at the opposite end of the runway one of these big bastards came at me the opposite end of the runway about shit my pants. Used every bit of the runway on its way to Vietnam blew my wheels watch Shack right over. I kind of figured it was going to happen because the wings are so far over the edge of the runway so I got the hell out of there. Call field support for some assistance. The C5 is one hell of an airplane I'll tell you that.

The TF39 is a 'boosted' twin-spool (shaft) design. Normally for non-RR turbofans, the front fan is on one concentric shaft and the core compressor is on another shaft, each powered by their own independent turbine stages (RR big turbofans are usually 3-spool). The TF39 and other GE engines have a 'half-stage' on the fan shaft - that is, another set of fan blades that don't reach out to the main outer shroud, they're only the radius of the core shroud. Their job is to give a bit more boost to the core airflow. The TF39 is different again in that instead of having this booster stage behind the main fan - between the fan and the actual core intake - the booster stage is *in front of* the main fan and the main fan itself sits behind inlet guide vanes. The arrangement of these stages on the fan shaft is probably why the TF39 has such a unique noise for a turbofan.

That growl sounds similar to the BART train back in the day when it was traveling at high speeds. This was before BART changed the motors about 20 years ago (or so).
It would have been the spring of 2007. I was driving a semi down I-70 around the Dayton area. I happened to look up and see a C-5 taking off out of Wright-Patt. It must have been climbing and been at least 6-7000 feet in the air. I rolled the window down, and even with the Cat diesel at highway speed I swear I could still hear the plane. :)
I had another occasion in TX. I was spending the night at a truck stop in Amarillo and there was a C-5 doing combat maneuvers/tight turns right over the parking lot. It made for an interesting few minutes.

It sounded like he exceeded the five minute TRT limit. Also it took a long time to reach vMFR and flap retract height also. I could be mistooken. I thought I saw the thrust reverses Crack open a little as well but probably not. The plane would have crashed if that were so. I was a flight engineer on those for fourteen years and I really miss that sound and experience.
The trt limit wasn’t exceeded. After the 5 min trt, power was advanced to MRT which depending on temp is usually higher n1 setting than trt. MRT power can be used for 30 minutes. It took a long time to reach flap retract speed because we where heavy and it was hot. Also wanted to gain altitude because of a combat environment.

I recognized that Taliban terrain before I read the location in the description. It should have read low air pressure high altitude makes for long takeoff. Those engines are massive.
The buzzsaw sounds like a V8 at 7000 RPMS.
