I pity those who disliked this video that represent the life in it's deepest sense... a horse is not a toy, a horse is a wonderful creature that has heart and soul... don't damage it through the cruel horse sports, receive it with kindness and peace and the horse will never fail to enchant you with it's endless beauty
I am 16 years old and I've been riding horses since I was 8. I have recently taken up a bit of Natural Horsemanship and love it, but, watching this, I realized that so much that I do with my horse is wrong. Natural horsemanship is definitely better than the way I used to ride, but now I understand what is the best for my girl and I. Thank you so much for sharing this, it brought me to tears a few times, but it definitely opened my eyes and inspired me to change, both in my riding and my actual life.

Simply beautifully done. And I am living this. I am 56. I have been riding 3 years. A beautiful 8 yr old Arabian mare. Took lots of lessons. Fell over and over. Would not let go of my "horse dream". Yes, she was young, yes, she's an Arabian, yes, I was green - more so than her. But when I stopped "thinking", and started "feeling", that's when the magic began. Friends will never "get" the bond we have. I am told horses don't "love", but after seeing this, I am more convinced than ever that they do. Thank you for the inspiration.

Just watched this movie for the 3rd or 4th time. I grew up with horses (now in my 60s). They saved my spiritual life in a fairly dark childhood. As a kid, I intuitively felt what this movie talks about. I evented, was in horse shows, went on fox hunts, etc. I wish I'd had a teacher who knew all of what's in this movie. Never could afford to have a horse as an adult. I love horses beyond words, and I apologize to Sean, Rocky, Bonfire, and Pepper for what I didn't know.
I had horses as a young girl. Spent hours riding the hills bareback with just a halter and a rope. My gelding was so gentle and I loved him dearly and miss him even now 55 years later. Horses are truly spiritual creatures in that they connect with us on a deep heart level. This video made me cry in places. So well done and thought provoking.
When I was young, I used to ride bareback, with no bridle. In those moments, I always felt that the horse was teaching me... It's wonderful to see so many people discovering this beautiful connection.
I am in tears and profoundly inspired by this woman's powerful journey of strength and compassion. I have learned many lessons from dogs and can see a correlation. The 'connection' she speaks of is essential to our finding a way to live on this planet with breath, understanding, kindness and compassion.
For many years of Natural Horsemanship, the saying has been "When you remove the halter & lead all you have left is the truth". These days working at liberty, I have taken that one step further & now say "when you remove ALL the tack (& the fences), all you have left is the truth".
I find it amazing that anyone would dislike this. Working with wild horses, it is AMAZING the connection you can make if the relationship is a partnership, not domination through pain. Some people just don't get it.
When beauty and authenticity are found, remembered, seen, experienced, and shared it gives a fullness that can nurture without boundaries. Thanks for sharing
This is awesome. I have a mare who was very green and hadn't been ridden or really messed with for a good 6 years. We bonded over the course of 2 years of me just petting on her and feeding her as I didn't ever think I'd ride her because she'd been a pet for so long but I now ride her by myself and even got her used to fly spray. She grooms my leg when I cry on her and it's just the most amazing bond. She was trained harshly in the past and would run away if she saw a whip. I can now touch her anywhere with the whip and she doesn't really care.
A real eye-opener. I admit, I Always trained, no... abused horses the way I train. It's time to change. And that's what I'm gonna do. Thank you, for this video, this journey, this new road. I hope all good riders eventually will ride like this.

Hi, Thank you for this great documentary. I am currently a Chinese university sophomore, who has long been fanscinated by horses and greatly inspired by this video. I have never been around a horse until two years ago, a one-day trip on horse's back made my long-held dream come true. And so far that is all my horse experience. However, I am a born horsegirl and I believe horse will take a huge part of my future life. Even though I can't be with a real horse , I do have get my life connected with horses through wonderful horse stories. Black Beauty by Anna Sewell was the first horse book I read, followed by Horse Whisperer, Dreamer, The War Horse, Flicka, etc....When I found this documentary several months ago, I could't help watching again and again, often with tears in eyes. On the one hand, I am so glad that this kind of connections between human and horses not only exist but also is being cherished by certain people. On the other hand, I am sad about the fact that in my country, China, few people are aware of this. The strong wish of sharing the charms of human-horse connections brought me the idea of translating it into Chinese so that more Chinese people would be able to watch. I cried a little watching this. This really touched my heart. I was thinking of getting a horse to ride for a long time. Now I am thinking of getting one to be treated they way it should. It doesn't deserve to be treated like most of them are. It's sad to think of people getting a horse to abuse them :( thank u so much for making this video. Now I understand the true beauty of horses

My heart is to have a ministry with wounded kids and horses - I do not have a lot of experience but have always loved horses, and the Lord used one to heal me...I volunteer at a horses for handicapped program and recently the Lord has been teaching me much of what was in this documentary...this was confirmation that I am hearing Him. Absolutely stunning presentation. Thank you so much for making this beautiful documentary. I agree with you completely and if more people were like you we would live in the world that only comes after this one ... it's time for cruelty to end. I returned to horse "ownership" after years of being away from horses. What brought me back was a local horse rescue that I would not stop until they were safe. After connecting with four poor starving horses who I promised to rescue, and seeing two of them afterwards, I knew that my horse time would continue. The two horses who were the oldest and poorest remembered me. They ran to me, after only barely being able to walk, they GALLOPED to me and gave me so many horse hugs and nudges that I cried huge tears. It was the most beautiful moment ... so, I have a horse now. She's a 5 year old mare and I do not use a bit with her. I teach her a little in the round pen but mostly she and I are just close. She has three llamas for company (rescues), two weimeraner dogs (rescues) and five cats (rescues). She herself was rescued from auction and then trained and loved by a young girl before coming to me. The morale of my story is, this documentary shows the truth about humans and horses. We are connected. They are like the whales and the dolphins. If only we can connect...God Bless You All.
I'm a 14 year old girl, and you just made me cry. You made me realise what I have done to one I love. I feel like I have destroy a horse, even one that means so much for me. I know that I would think of every move I do, when I are around him. Normally I stars into the wall, like nothing never have cared. You mad me realise that even when I have used 4-5 ours around him every Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, I maybe not know him.But I want to know him, because what I know of, he is amazing!
I love this video, I had a horse as a young teenage girl whom I loved with all my heart and she used to do what I called her crazy dances with me, looking back I know she was happy to be with me, which is lovely more so because she had been treated badly and as a result we got her cheap a Dunn Mare she was and I named her katie and without anyone showing me or telling me how to do things I knew I needed to gain her trust before even trying to get on her back and for the first 6 months i sat in her stall with her feeding he carrots and talking to her, leaving the radio playing in the mornings when I left her in winter and turning it off when i went back to see to her at tea time and I walked her all over my area, talking to her and giving her little nibble's all the time and slowly she did start to trust me and I loved her so much, I am so happy to know she knew this as well, she used to coming running to me out of the field in the summer months when i would go to see her each day, and the others said I was mad to get on this horses back she would canter backwards a few feet and things like this and I was never scared of her and funnily enough I rode her alot with her saddle as new this was probably not comfy for her and all i ever had was her best intentions at heart, I was so sad when I could keep her no longer the cost was high back then and my parents could afford it no longer..but I know I made this horse happy and for that I am grateful and humbled...best video by a country mile on you tube...in fact the internet...
This movie talks a lot about myself. My own expectations are in my way daily. I am frustrated and miserable, because I didn't live up to them and I completely miss being in the moment. Sometimes I believe that this is why I have always loved horses and why I finally have one of my own. They teach me in ways that I only start to understand, but it is the path of self-discovery. No degree in the world will be able to teach me as horses do. Thanks for this inspiring movie.
If you haven't already, Id recommend looking in to learning massage for horses, that will give you another dimension to understanding your horse, and to your relating with them. They love a good deep tissue back rub after riding and will melt in your hands. (I have worked with both people and horses, and the latter are just honesty incarnated, they can't tell a lie, and if you learn how to listen they will give you all of themselves to your relationship in a heartbeat)
After watching this documentary I have a whole new outlook on horses, with some horses you know when their sad when their happy and relaxed. Some people think horses are made just for riding but they are here to be loved and cared for or wild . Beauty, a horse that I know, I care for her and muck her out along with the other horses in my riding school she is only 2 years old.
i rarely ride my 16.1hh TB gelding. but he enriches my life so much. nothing beats the feeling when he sees me, calls out and comes to me at full gallop slides to a stop with his head above me then drops his head over my shoulder. i trust him 100% and i adore him. he has a tough time as a racehorse before i got him, why shouldn't he just be allowed to be a horse. he loves to play, and takes great joy pushing me into the barrow when i muck out his paddock lol i wouldnt change a thing about him

Wonderful video. I have loved horses since I was 5 years old. My first horse was Wildfire we had a deep relationship of trust and love. I had many horses and loved each and everyone of them. I worked with horses for over 40 years. They are love and the best thing for the human race. I had to share this maybe people will learn more about horses thank you.
I've actually been sobbing thorough out this video. I've been aware of Liberty horsemanship for a couple of months but myself only being 13 I don't have a horse of my own to share this kind of journey with. But I will change my path, I will.

Lol... well lets see, according to the bible which is what I personally go by there are! The bible mentions horses very frequently, and when all is made right with the earth again, it says we will be riding in victory on beautiful white horses.
Well the subject of animals having souls troubled me, because every time I look in my horses eyes I know there is a soul there. And it was right there in genesis, right in the beginning: "all animals born into one soul" and that kind of makes sense
me i'm only 12 and me and my horses have never been happier in our lives she wasn't treated properly and now i see i wasnt treating her properly either and all i have to say is thank you.
A lot of this rings true for me. I've shown horses, my own and others, for many years. Over the years I've used training techniques that I regret, we didn't know better. I've won National titles and now to some degree I've lost the desire to show horses. Now I let my horses live as they should, as a herd. They make the choice to be inside or outside. When I ride, my motto is "kindness first". I work with them almost daily, usually they are loose, so they choose to participate or not. I find it liberating that they choose to be with me and be my partner.
This documentary opened my eyes and now I see horses on a different way.Some people treat them like slaves but they should be our friend and a life teacher!
So many of you have missed the point. It's about Balance and harmony and not using pain as a training method and if your horse is in pain because of ill fitting saddle give him a rest. And so many riders are just too quick to snatch their horses mouths and use the bit for discipline, The point is we can find a new way of interacting with our horses without inflicting pain and discomfort.
She specifically said even the best fitting saddle causes pain and damage after only 15 minutes of use. You can ride, with no tack at all in a free environment for 15 minutes at a time max and no competition or work for the horses. That is the only acceptable way to ride. Even then you must accept that riding is not necessary to have a relationship with a horse so your still doing it for yourself.
If you inflict pain and discomfort you’re probably just a bad rider, horses started right do not have to be forced into being ridden and are happy to do it
This video has really opened my eyes to alot. I see now what lies beyond just the riding and the time spent on the horses back. And I am willing to change my ways. Thank you for helping all of us open up to somthing much more beautiful than a blue ribbon.

As some people are either in denial that they inflict this on their horses or thy don't care. what is said in this video is all so true. natural/liberty horsemanship has helped change and save many horse/human relationships. It is amazing! i am so glad that many of us are finally discovering that horses are not " just horses "! they are living beings! the sooner we realise that they are beings of freedom and beauty. they have their own special subtle language. which we need to understand to have a good relationship with them. I am so annoyed that many people can't understand this!

My riding instructor is always telling me to see things from my lesson horse's perspective...that if you're calm,they'll be calm.If you're upset,they'll be upset...they look to you to see how they should feel at any given moment.I didn't have exposure to horses as a kid,but my mom says she's shocked 'horse' wasn't my first word.Now that I'm able to take lessons,I realize why i've felt such a connection my whole life.It's a dream come true.tysvm 4 this awesome video!

i really really adore this video!!! i used a bit on my horse, (month ago) but i will never use it again! i don't think i will stop ridding at all, but i kow i will do much moe natural work with my gorgues horse! i am very thankful for you about opening my eyes even more then they where! thank you! hope more and more pepole will understand how we need to be with horses.
I have a pony and he is my soulmate, I love him so much but at the start of this year I had a sudden growth spurt and can no longer ride him as he is too small.. I had always loved doing liberty and now that is what I do with him.. I once thought that maybe he would be happier in a home where he could be ridden and so I let a girl trial lease him he hated it and wasn't happy I felt unhappy as though I was experiencing it.. The girl felt how he was my baby and how he missed me and so she said you know I think you should keep him.. And I felt happy and he seemed so much calmer and relaxed and I knew he was happy with me. So now we do liberty and dance together. I am so thankful to have met my partner and soulmate with an equine form.. He is my whole universe and I love him more than I can express :)
You will fond another riding pal. But there is so much more that riding. And that's what you have with your buddy. You can just cherish and love yall relationship.
I started off with such a wonderful relationship with my horse...he gladly follow me wherever I went. We were content to just be. Then, I made the mistake of taking lessons and entering into competitions. I became one of those riders shown in this documentary and I lost his trust. At the time I didn't see it. I was too wrapped up in my own weaknesses. Fortunately, in his last 6 years we reconnected because I let him be who he was. I am so fortunate that he helped me see the child in me.
i have been reading some of the comments on this video about how people want others to understand that horses are beings of wisdom, beauty and simplicity in the most complicated ways and i love it because it means that others are starting to understand that horses cannot be controlled they have to want to do as you ask but thats exactly it you have to ask it should be a question not a command you have do be willing to get frustrated and to just spend time with your horse without riding to truly develop a relationship with them. in short its complicated in the most simple way just like the horse its self.
i love this... also i don't own a horse but i spend a lot of time at the barn. I always play music. I decided to go out to one of the older horse and my friends mares pasture. So i packed my lunch, music and speaker. i walked up to the top of the hill where i normally stopped turned on my music and sat down( and my friend listens to the same music.) her mare came flying over to me ( a horse who is normally hard to catch.) she actually layer down and i gave her some of my lunch.... ANOTHER this is i own a alpaca and most are scared till they know you. I was at the farm and on baby watch. i went and sat music down at a tree and with in a hr all even the sketch ones came up to me...Now i can almost approach all of them!
I have been riding horses since I was younger, at an equestrian centre, where they teach you to use crops and be stern with your horse. From the oment I started riding there, I felt so bad about whipping ponies and horses into doing what they were told. When I was 16, I rode a horse that was scared to jump, so she went around the hurdle everytime I approached. My instructor told me to whip her and go at it again until she'd go. She proceeded to throw me off of her back and I realised I deserved that response. I have never jumped with her since and refused to when I was asked to. My mother told me I am "too nice" to the horses and it wouldn't hurt to be more strict if I wanted to become a better rider. When I was 18, a friend of mine introduced me to her Frisian mare, Blackie. She had been used for breeding for many years and didn't know how to be ridden, so my friend's father hired a trainer, and everyday I'd see that trainer whip Blackie around, with all these elastic reins attached to her briddle to keep her head down, I felt so sad, so I asked the father if I could take care of her instead. And I did. She was such a fun and gentle horse, she would stand really still when I got onto her back and then the first few minutes of riding we would go on this crazy bolt where she would just run around and go crazy and I would sit on her back and just yell in a way a child would when they are having so much fun and then we would practise jumping together, which she LOVED to do but was REALLY bad at, which made for these really funny situations. She would come bolting toward the hurdle, make a full stop, sniff it, then carefully step over it as to check how high it was, then go off bolting again toward the hurdle and leap over it with four hooves at once, and I would never stop laughing. She was the best horse I have ever met. I am currently taking riding lessons again, still in doubt about what I'm learning there and this documentary convinced me to stop listening to my mother and my instructor and start riding horses as I feel is right, with respect and with that childish feel of having fun with a friend, because horses are your friends and anyone who sees that to be otherwise can go and have a kick in the face.
That's sad. When did u start riding? I started when I was 2 w/ my mom and got my own horse at age 7 then we moved to America and we got a new horse named Jetta he is my angle but I still miss the horse in China (Sheray) but my mom already sold her. I am now 11 and is really happy with Jetta as my horse and competing in training level 1-2 dressage shows so far I have gotten a 1 first 3 seconds and 2 thirds. Also I don't exactly own Jetta my family full leased him but when I get my own hose I probs won't be able to let go so my parents are going to ask if Jetta's owner will sell him.

Until you have opened your eyes, body and soul to the fact that constriction on a horses face is no good you will not see the damage is causes. I had a 14.2 hh qh mare. We would ride bareback no halter or lead, no bridle, and just ride! Outside of an indoor arena, on roads in trails, in rivers and lakes... I did the jumping the barrels the eventing the reining... For example (i am not harping on disciplines) dressage, a big double bridle to keep the horse in frame. The neck forced bent like that causes problems in the neck and back. Jumpers, the horse throws his head and gets excited at a jump we add a bigger bit to control the uncontrollable horse. Western pleasure and reining. We use big bits with high ports to keep the head low, we have slowed their gait to un unnatural pace. I can go on and on and on! But it's the internet and people call others liars and horrible names! I see the abuse, thats my opinion and until you see DO NOT JUDGE ME!

Riding bareback is worst. Saddles cushion all the weight of you rider. Instead of all the weight going onto one spine. But you need a good fitting saddle, or else it will damage the horses back. Engage your horses back and it will put the shock absorbers of the horse on, so it will be able to carry you without pain. High neck carriage is a symbol of the horses top line strength when it's engaged. Is the horse is disengaged the horses feet will trail out behind it.
I ride my horse both bitless and with a bit, depending on the time of day, where I'm riding, and how many people are around. her previous owner did it this way too. I specifically ride her with her bitted bridle on trails because she tries to bolt back to the barn, and I've taken a bad fall when she did that with the bitless bridle. I recommend doing what keeps you and your horse safe. I know that if I'm in the indoor arena, I could ride her tackless, but if I'm on a trail I should have a bit. you should really learn about your horse before you automatically go "okay, bits are bad, let's try a neck rope on you!"
It's not about individual people doing it wrong, of the general practice, even at its best, causes pain and discomfort, and robs the animal of the freedom of choice.
I've always loved horses. When I was a kid I told myself I'll never use a bit or a whip or anything to hurt the horse. When I started learning to train with horses I realized I had to use force to teach them. Now I see that I really needed to stop and understand them and the way their minds think so I know how to teach them the best way possible. My fav riding experience is bareback and using just a bridal with no bit. Its simple but still safe and I feel more alive and connected with the horse. I feel free and I feel like I'm allowing the horse to not feel so heavy with the loads of leather and junk on its body. I haven't ridden horses in a long time due to certain circumstances. But I'd love to get back on some day. My advice is don't be afraid to ride your horse. Learn their personality and mind. Build a relationship. And once you got that relationship... I'm sure your horse will be honored to carry you on a journey :)

It's important to connect with your horse first. How about inviting the horse to spend time with you on the ground, and then you ask permission to ride another time.
I need to go on a journey of my own to witness this beauty for myself. I was hoping I'd learn some more insight to how this kind of bonding starts. But I guess you can't fit that into a 1 hour film. For those of you that say this is a "hippie film" or an "exaggeration of the truth" are missing the point at hand. We need to understand that we are animals. We share similar instincts. The only difference is greed. Money in this passion has corrupted the mere way we look at these creatures and even the way we say the word horse. Please remember the horse is a living creature, just like you all, before you start degrading a video of this caliber. This woman has embarked on a journey that led her to the discovery, that the horse and human can indeed be one. I wish us all best of luck to that odyssey.
I don’t think it takes hours days or years unless there has already been trauma with the animal. I’m blessed to know three mayors that are sweet and no history of trauma. They came to me nearly immediately soon as I saw them and they saw me. Of course I had treats.🤣
When I was riding a horse that would not listen to me (I thought), I would be frustrated. But now I realise that I didn't listen to them. (and if i did sometimes, i didn't act like I should've...)
The most beautiful documentary I have seen. Learning to be authentic and dance their way is key. When the one man was speaking of being that 6 year old in the field resonated so much with me. Just beautiful!!!!
I pity those who disliked this video that represent the life in it's deepest sense... a horse is not a toy, a horse is a wonderful creature that has heart and soul... don't damage it through the cruel horse sports, receive it with kindness and peace and the horse will never fail to enchant you with it's endless beauty
I am 16 years old and I've been riding horses since I was 8. I have recently taken up a bit of Natural Horsemanship and love it, but, watching this, I realized that so much that I do with my horse is wrong. Natural horsemanship is definitely better than the way I used to ride, but now I understand what is the best for my girl and I. Thank you so much for sharing this, it brought me to tears a few times, but it definitely opened my eyes and inspired me to change, both in my riding and my actual life.

Simply beautifully done. And I am living this. I am 56. I have been riding 3 years. A beautiful 8 yr old Arabian mare. Took lots of lessons. Fell over and over. Would not let go of my "horse dream". Yes, she was young, yes, she's an Arabian, yes, I was green - more so than her. But when I stopped "thinking", and started "feeling", that's when the magic began. Friends will never "get" the bond we have. I am told horses don't "love", but after seeing this, I am more convinced than ever that they do. Thank you for the inspiration.

Just watched this movie for the 3rd or 4th time. I grew up with horses (now in my 60s). They saved my spiritual life in a fairly dark childhood. As a kid, I intuitively felt what this movie talks about. I evented, was in horse shows, went on fox hunts, etc. I wish I'd had a teacher who knew all of what's in this movie. Never could afford to have a horse as an adult. I love horses beyond words, and I apologize to Sean, Rocky, Bonfire, and Pepper for what I didn't know.

I had horses as a young girl. Spent hours riding the hills bareback with just a halter and a rope. My gelding was so gentle and I loved him dearly and miss him even now 55 years later. Horses are truly spiritual creatures in that they connect with us on a deep heart level. This video made me cry in places. So well done and thought provoking.
This isn't just about horsemanship. This teaches us how to live and the way to live in a real, deep seated way. Thank you!

For many years of Natural Horsemanship, the saying has been "When you remove the halter & lead all you have left is the truth".
These days working at liberty, I have taken that one step further & now say "when you remove ALL the tack (& the fences), all you have left is the truth".
I find it amazing that anyone would dislike this. Working with wild horses, it is AMAZING the connection you can make if the relationship is a partnership, not domination through pain. Some people just don't get it.
This video changed my perspective on horses and how to treat them. Thanks to this video, I always dream about dancing with horses.

This is awesome. I have a mare who was very green and hadn't been ridden or really messed with for a good 6 years. We bonded over the course of 2 years of me just petting on her and feeding her as I didn't ever think I'd ride her because she'd been a pet for so long but I now ride her by myself and even got her used to fly spray. She grooms my leg when I cry on her and it's just the most amazing bond. She was trained harshly in the past and would run away if she saw a whip. I can now touch her anywhere with the whip and she doesn't really care.

Thank you for this great documentary. I am currently a Chinese university sophomore, who has long been fanscinated by horses and greatly inspired by this video. I have never been around a horse until two years ago, a one-day trip on horse's back made my long-held dream come true. And so far that is all my horse experience.
However, I am a born horsegirl and I believe horse will take a huge part of my future life. Even though I can't be with a real horse , I do have get my life connected with horses through wonderful horse stories. Black Beauty by Anna Sewell was the first horse book I read, followed by Horse Whisperer, Dreamer, The War Horse, Flicka, etc....When I found this documentary several months ago, I could't help watching again and again, often with tears in eyes. On the one hand, I am so glad that this kind of connections between human and horses not only exist but also is being cherished by certain people. On the other hand, I am sad about the fact that in my country, China, few people are aware of this.
The strong wish of sharing the charms of human-horse connections brought me the idea of translating it into Chinese so that more Chinese people would be able to watch. I don't know if it is possible that I am allowed to upload it to a Chinese website with Chinese subtitles. Probably not. Then what do I have to do to make it possible?

I love horses a lot I want one so much
I cried a little watching this. This really touched my heart. I was thinking of getting a horse to ride for a long time. Now I am thinking of getting one to be treated they way it should. It doesn't deserve to be treated like most of them are. It's sad to think of people getting a horse to abuse them :( thank u so much for making this video. Now I understand the true beauty of horses

My heart is to have a ministry with wounded kids and horses - I do not have a lot of experience but have always loved horses, and the Lord used one to heal me...I volunteer at a horses for handicapped program and recently the Lord has been teaching me much of what was in this documentary...this was confirmation that I am hearing Him. Absolutely stunning presentation. Thank you so much for making this beautiful documentary. I agree with you completely and if more people were like you we would live in the world that only comes after this one ... it's time for cruelty to end. I returned to horse "ownership" after years of being away from horses. What brought me back was a local horse rescue that I would not stop until they were safe. After connecting with four poor starving horses who I promised to rescue, and seeing two of them afterwards, I knew that my horse time would continue. The two horses who were the oldest and poorest remembered me. They ran to me, after only barely being able to walk, they GALLOPED to me and gave me so many horse hugs and nudges that I cried huge tears. It was the most beautiful moment ... so, I have a horse now. She's a 5 year old mare and I do not use a bit with her. I teach her a little in the round pen but mostly she and I are just close. She has three llamas for company (rescues), two weimeraner dogs (rescues) and five cats (rescues). She herself was rescued from auction and then trained and loved by a young girl before coming to me. The morale of my story is, this documentary shows the truth about humans and horses. We are connected. They are like the whales and the dolphins. If only we can connect...God Bless You All.
I'm a 14 year old girl, and you just made me cry. You made me realise what I have done to one I love. I feel like I have destroy a horse, even one that means so much for me. I know that I would think of every move I do, when I are around him. Normally I stars into the wall, like nothing never have cared. You mad me realise that even when I have used 4-5 ours around him every Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, I maybe not know him.But I want to know him, because what I know of, he is amazing!
I love this video, I had a horse as a young teenage girl whom I loved with all my heart and she used to do what I called her crazy dances with me, looking back I know she was happy to be with me, which is lovely more so because she had been treated badly and as a result we got her cheap a Dunn Mare she was and I named her katie and without anyone showing me or telling me how to do things I knew I needed to gain her trust before even trying to get on her back and for the first 6 months i sat in her stall with her feeding he carrots and talking to her, leaving the radio playing in the mornings when I left her in winter and turning it off when i went back to see to her at tea time and I walked her all over my area, talking to her and giving her little nibble's all the time and slowly she did start to trust me and I loved her so much, I am so happy to know she knew this as well, she used to coming running to me out of the field in the summer months when i would go to see her each day, and the others said I was mad to get on this horses back she would canter backwards a few feet and things like this and I was never scared of her and funnily enough I rode her alot with her saddle as new this was probably not comfy for her and all i ever had was her best intentions at heart, I was so sad when I could keep her no longer the cost was high back then and my parents could afford it no longer..but I know I made this horse happy and for that I am grateful and humbled...best video by a country mile on you tube...in fact the internet...

This movie talks a lot about myself. My own expectations are in my way daily. I am frustrated and miserable, because I didn't live up to them and I completely miss being in the moment. Sometimes I believe that this is why I have always loved horses and why I finally have one of my own. They teach me in ways that I only start to understand, but it is the path of self-discovery. No degree in the world will be able to teach me as horses do. Thanks for this inspiring movie.

If you haven't already, Id recommend looking in to learning massage for horses, that will give you another dimension to understanding your horse, and to your relating with them. They love a good deep tissue back rub after riding and will melt in your hands. (I have worked with both people and horses, and the latter are just honesty incarnated, they can't tell a lie, and if you learn how to listen they will give you all of themselves to your relationship in a heartbeat)
You do realize that riding bareback can hurt your horses back even more than riding with a saddle, right?

Some people think horses are made just for riding but they are here to be loved and cared for or wild . Beauty, a horse that I know, I care for her and muck her out along with the other horses in my riding school she is only 2 years old.

i rarely ride my 16.1hh TB gelding. but he enriches my life so much. nothing beats the feeling when he sees me, calls out and comes to me at full gallop slides to a stop with his head above me then drops his head over my shoulder. i trust him 100% and i adore him. he has a tough time as a racehorse before i got him, why shouldn't he just be allowed to be a horse. he loves to play, and takes great joy pushing me into the barrow when i muck out his paddock lol i wouldnt change a thing about him

Wonderful video. I have loved horses since I was 5 years old. My first horse was Wildfire we had a deep relationship of trust and love. I had many horses and loved each and everyone of them. I worked with horses for over 40 years. They are love and the best thing for the human race. I had to share this maybe people will learn more about horses thank you.

Well the subject of animals having souls troubled me, because every time I look in my horses eyes I know there is a soul there. And it was right there in genesis, right in the beginning: "all animals born into one soul" and that kind of makes sense

me i'm only 12 and me and my horses have never been happier in our lives she wasn't treated properly and now i see i wasnt treating her properly either and all i have to say is thank you.
A lot of this rings true for me. I've shown horses, my own and others, for many years. Over the years I've used training techniques that I regret, we didn't know better. I've won National titles and now to some degree I've lost the desire to show horses. Now I let my horses live as they should, as a herd. They make the choice to be inside or outside. When I ride, my motto is "kindness first". I work with them almost daily, usually they are loose, so they choose to participate or not. I find it liberating that they choose to be with me and be my partner.
This documentary opened my eyes and now I see horses on a different way.Some people treat them like slaves but they should be our friend and a life teacher!
So many of you have missed the point. It's about Balance and harmony and not using pain as a training method and if your horse is in pain because of ill fitting saddle give him a rest. And so many riders are just too quick to snatch their horses mouths and use the bit for discipline, The point is we can find a new way of interacting with our horses without inflicting pain and discomfort.
She specifically said even the best fitting saddle causes pain and damage after only 15 minutes of use. You can ride, with no tack at all in a free environment for 15 minutes at a time max and no competition or work for the horses. That is the only acceptable way to ride. Even then you must accept that riding is not necessary to have a relationship with a horse so your still doing it for yourself.
If you inflict pain and discomfort you’re probably just a bad rider, horses started right do not have to be forced into being ridden and are happy to do it
This video has really opened my eyes to alot. I see now what lies beyond just the riding and the time spent on the horses back. And I am willing to change my ways. Thank you for helping all of us open up to somthing much more beautiful than a blue ribbon.

As some people are either in denial that they inflict this on their horses or thy don't care. what is said in this video is all so true. natural/liberty horsemanship has helped change and save many horse/human relationships. My riding instructor is always telling me to see things from my lesson horse's perspective...that if you're calm,they'll be calm.If you're upset,they'll be upset...they look to you to see how they should feel at any given moment.I didn't have exposure to horses as a kid,but my mom says she's shocked 'horse' wasn't my first word.Now that I'm able to take lessons,I realize why i've felt such a connection my whole life.It's a dream come true.tysvm 4 this awesome video!

i really really adore this video!!! i used a bit on my horse, (month ago) but i will never use it again! i don't think i will stop ridding at all, but i kow i will do much moe natural work with my gorgues horse! i am very thankful for you about opening my eyes even more then they where! thank you! hope more and more pepole will understand how we need to be with horses.
I have a pony and he is my soulmate, I love him so much but at the start of this year I had a sudden growth spurt and can no longer ride him as he is too small.. I had always loved doing liberty and now that is what I do with him.. I once thought that maybe he would be happier in a home where he could be ridden and so I let a girl trial lease him he hated it and wasn't happy I felt unhappy as though I was experiencing it.. The girl felt how he was my baby and how he missed me and so she said you know I think you should keep him.. And I felt happy and he seemed so much calmer and relaxed and I knew he was happy with me. So now we do liberty and dance together. I am so thankful to have met my partner and soulmate with an equine form.. He is my whole universe and I love him more than I can express :)

I started off with such a wonderful relationship with my horse...he gladly follow me wherever I went. We were content to just be. Then, I made the mistake of taking lessons and entering into competitions. I became one of those riders shown in this documentary and I lost his trust. At the time I didn't see it. I was too wrapped up in my own weaknesses. Fortunately, in his last 6 years we reconnected because I let him be who he was. I am so fortunate that he helped me see the child in me.
i have been reading some of the comments on this video about how people want others to understand that horses are beings of wisdom, beauty and simplicity in the most complicated ways and i love it because it means that others are starting to understand that horses cannot be controlled they have to want to do as you ask but thats exactly it you have to ask it should be a question not a command you have do be willing to get frustrated and to just spend time with your horse without riding to truly develop a relationship with them. in short its complicated in the most simple way just like the horse its self.

i love this... also i don't own a horse but i spend a lot of time at the barn. I always play music. I decided to go out to one of the older horse and my friends mares pasture. So i packed my lunch, music and speaker. i walked up to the top of the hill where i normally stopped turned on my music and sat down( and my friend listens to the same music.) her mare came flying over to me ( a horse who is normally hard to catch.) she actually layer down and i gave her some of my lunch.... ANOTHER this is i own a alpaca and most are scared till they know you. I was at the farm and on baby watch. i went and sat music down at a tree and with in a hr all even the sketch ones came up to me...Now i can almost approach all of them!

I have been riding horses since I was younger, at an equestrian centre, where they teach you to use crops and be stern with your horse. From the oment I started riding there, I felt so bad about whipping ponies and horses into doing what they were told. When I was 16, I rode a horse that was scared to jump, so she went around the hurdle everytime I approached. My instructor told me to whip her and go at it again until she'd go. She proceeded to throw me off of her back and I realised I deserved that response. I have never jumped with her since and refused to when I was asked to. My mother told me I am "too nice" to the horses and it wouldn't hurt to be more strict if I wanted to become a better rider.
When I was 18, a friend of mine introduced me to her Frisian mare, Blackie. She had been used for breeding for many years and didn't know how to be ridden, so my friend's father hired a trainer, and everyday I'd see that trainer whip Blackie around, with all these elastic reins attached to her briddle to keep her head down, I felt so sad, so I asked the father if I could take care of her instead. And I did. She was such a fun and gentle horse, she would stand really still when I got onto her back and then the first few minutes of riding we would go on this crazy bolt where she would just run around and go crazy and I would sit on her back and just yell in a way a child would when they are having so much fun and then we would practise jumping together, which she LOVED to do but was REALLY bad at, which made for these really funny situations. She would come bolting toward the hurdle, make a full stop, sniff it, then carefully step over it as to check how high it was, then go off bolting again toward the hurdle and leap over it with four hooves at once, and I would never stop laughing. She was the best horse I have ever met.
I am currently taking riding lessons again, still in doubt about what I'm learning there and this documentary convinced me to stop listening to my mother and my instructor and start riding horses as I feel is right, with respect and with that childish feel of having fun with a friend, because horses are your friends and anyone who sees that to be otherwise can go and have a kick in the face.
That's sad. When did u start riding? I started when I was 2 w/ my mom and got my own horse at age 7 then we moved to America and we got a new horse named Jetta he is my angle but I still miss the horse in China (Sheray) but my mom already sold her. I am now 11 and is really happy with Jetta as my horse and competing in training level 1-2 dressage shows so far I have gotten a 1 first 3 seconds and 2 thirds. Also I don't exactly own Jetta my family full leased him but when I get my own hose I probs won't be able to let go so my parents are going to ask if Jetta's owner will sell him.
+Lotte Weber Your mom is probably right if you want to become a rider who wins competitions, but if you want to be a compassionate human who loves and protects horses, you probably wouldn't be a rider.
+Lotte Weber Wonderful to read, perhaps you should try your hand at writing. Seems you would be capable of writing an epic immersive narrative with humans and horses.

anyone that loves horses need to watch this. a very eye opening documentary
Until you have opened your eyes, body and soul to the fact that constriction on a horses face is no good you will not see the damage is causes. I had a 14.2 hh qh mare. We would ride bareback no halter or lead, no bridle, and just ride! Outside of an indoor arena, on roads in trails, in rivers and lakes... I did the jumping the barrels the eventing the reining... For example (i am not harping on disciplines) dressage, a big double bridle to keep the horse in frame. The neck forced bent like that causes problems in the neck and back. Jumpers, the horse throws his head and gets excited at a jump we add a bigger bit to control the uncontrollable horse. Western pleasure and reining. We use big bits with high ports to keep the head low, we have slowed their gait to un unnatural pace. I can go on and on and on! But it's the internet and people call others liars and horrible names! I see the abuse, thats my opinion and until you see DO NOT JUDGE ME!

Riding bareback is worst. Saddles cushion all the weight of you rider. Instead of all the weight going onto one spine. But you need a good fitting saddle, or else it will damage the horses back. Engage your horses back and it will put the shock absorbers of the horse on, so it will be able to carry you without pain. High neck carriage is a symbol of the horses top line strength when it's engaged. Is the horse is disengaged the horses feet will trail out behind it.
I ride my horse both bitless and with a bit, depending on the time of day, where I'm riding, and how many people are around. her previous owner did it this way too. I specifically ride her with her bitted bridle on trails because she tries to bolt back to the barn, and I've taken a bad fall when she did that with the bitless bridle. I recommend doing what keeps you and your horse safe. I know that if I'm in the indoor arena, I could ride her tackless, but if I'm on a trail I should have a bit. you should really learn about your horse before you automatically go "okay, bits are bad, let's try a neck rope on you!"
Erica Bigras the way you did it was wrong. Don’t make like riding horses is bad because you did it incorrectly.
It's not about individual people doing it wrong, of the general practice, even at its best, causes pain and discomfort, and robs the animal of the freedom of choice.
What a beautiful documentary!
I've always loved horses. When I was a kid I told myself I'll never use a bit or a whip or anything to hurt the horse. When I started learning to train with horses I realized I had to use force to teach them. Now I see that I really needed to stop and understand them and the way their minds think so I know how to teach them the best way possible. My fav riding experience is bareback and using just a bridal with no bit. Its simple but still safe and I feel more alive and connected with the horse. I feel free and I feel like I'm allowing the horse to not feel so heavy with the loads of leather and junk on its body. I haven't ridden horses in a long time due to certain circumstances. But I'd love to get back on some day. My advice is don't be afraid to ride your horse. Learn their personality and mind. Build a relationship. And once you got that relationship... I'm sure your horse will be honored to carry you on a journey :)
This brought tears to my eyes, but now i feel stronger, like i don't need a bit, bridle or saddle but just need to trust the horse, im thirteen and have riding lessons, i tried riding bareback on the 16hh horse i ride in my lessons about a month ago, and i almost fell off two times but niw i feel like ill be able to to do it, i never liked bits or spurs but now after watching this, i actually cried a little realizing what i was doing to horse by riding it unnaturally, i remembered, horses weren't made to have saddles, bridles and bits, but they were made to connect with humans. This definitely changed my thinking about how to do riding and connect with horses. I also hope that the documentary changed your thoughts as well. Hope everyone who reads this is having a good day!
It's important to connect with your horse first. How about inviting the horse to spend time with you on the ground, and then you ask permission to ride another time.
I need to go on a journey of my own to witness this beauty for myself. I was hoping I'd learn some more insight to how this kind of bonding starts. But I guess you can't fit that into a 1 hour film. For those of you that say this is a "hippie film" or an "exaggeration of the truth" are missing the point at hand. We need to understand that we are animals. We share similar instincts. The only difference is greed. Money in this passion has corrupted the mere way we look at these creatures and even the way we say the word horse. Please remember the horse is a living creature, just like you all, before you start degrading a video of this caliber. This woman has embarked on a journey that led her to the discovery, that the horse and human can indeed be one. I wish us all best of luck to that odyssey.
I don’t think it takes hours days or years unless there has already been trauma with the animal. I’m blessed to know three mayors that are sweet and no history of trauma. They came to me nearly immediately soon as I saw them and they saw me. Of course I had treats.🤣

When I was riding a horse that would not listen to me (I thought), I would be frustrated. But now I realise that I didn't listen to them. (and if i did sometimes, i didn't act like I should've...)
The most beautiful documentary I have seen. Learning to be authentic and dance their way is key. When the one man was speaking of being that 6 year old in the field resonated so much with me. Just beautiful!!!!
