I was there for this. The loaded onto the Ship in Alameda, we steamed to Hawaii. If memory serves me correctly, they craned them back on the ship then craned them back off in San Diego and/or Alameda. BTW, love your content. Been watching for a couple of years now.
Just came across this video today. Thanks for posting this video. In 1995 I was an STG1 stationed aboard USS Crommelin FFG-37 in Pearl Harbor and I remember very well those few weeks in August and September of 1995. which culminated in a parade of ships and fly over/mini airshow of all the planes, including modern ones. I know there was a B-2 flyover but don't remember if there was an F-117 or not. It was really something to see and even more, be a part of. It would have been nice if we had the smart phone technology back then. I, unfortunately did not take any video or pictures. There must be some more video, hopefully good, or even photos of the ships, and planes, and events that went on that week. I hope if anyone has or knows of anything that they might either direct me towards it or share it. For nostalgia, it would be very cool to see more of that event. Anyways, thanks for posting this, it's a very cool video. I am going to share it around with some veterans groups I am a part of so more people can enjoy it.
There was an F-117. Every plane in the current inventory took part along with these vintage birds. It was a great week with the airshow at Barber's Point, the parade of ships and planes, the open house at Hickam, and all of the veterans in town. I had the honor of escorting a Marine Iwo Jima veteran around, such awesome memories. I can't find my old photos though. =(.
Had the honor of being present for this. VAQ-139. Watched from the deck. One of the coolest things I've ever experienced in avaition. One the cruise down to Pearl for this commemoration, a pair of B-1B's doing a supersonic flyby was another of the coolest things ever experiwmced
I know Jon....you are actually in this video. I was driving the P-16 and you were in the crew riding on the back. That is if you are the same Jon White that I served with.
Just putzing around TH-cam and I knew right when I saw this, it was the 1995 operation from the aircraft. I was at NAS Alameda for the load out and ship getting underway. We got a bunch of old timers flown out to meet the ship after she got outside the Gate. One of the last ones to get a helo ride was one of the old timer B-25 pilots who was running extremely late and missed the ship. He said “Did I miss the war?” We got him the last ride out there. I detailed to the station and worked the VIP flights so never got to see this end of it. Thank you for uploading this video. Brought back all those memories. For those that don’t know, James Doolittle loaded his Raiders up at NAS Alameda for his famous raid over Tokyo. Doolittle was also born in Alameda, but died just a couple years before this video and event happened.
I'm honestly surprised some bean counting Navy bureaucrat didn't put a stop to this. I mean, 70+ year old aircraft, no ejection seats, launching from a carrier in open ocean. The fact that this was allowed to take place from an active duty Navy carrier really bolsters my faith in the USA. They said "what the hell?" and did it!
F-18's: "Do you think the Corsair will be able to keep pace with us? Seems pretty unfair..." Corsair: "I do 450mph and racked up 2,140 kills in WW2 while you two were still sh**ting in diapers. Oh, and I killed a MiG over Korea." F-18's: "Alright, you can fly with us."
Corsair: bitch stfu i was getting up close to them zeroes and migs and cutting em down to pieces, you kids dont know how to get up close to the enemy and watch em burn! F-35: *shits himself F-18: jaw drops F-14: sigh grandpa calm down your off your meds
Oh my god this takes me back to 1995 I was one of the blue shirts getting the old warbirds ready. It was fun and honor to be there with some of the pilots that flew back WW2
This us so F'ing cool! I had no idea this happened. It's like the movie Final Countdown, except the Nimitz doesn't go back in time to WW2, but the old warbirds come forward in time to the Carl Vinson. I got to meet the navigator from the Doolittle Raid B-25 that landed in Russia at an air show in 2006. These guys were my hero's growing up not sports or movie stars. Thanks for posting this!
1995?... hmm I saw an F-18 fly off the deck. I believe the Tomcats were still flying till 2006 and it would have been nice to see one of those take off instead. These war birds have gained popularity and this is the first time I have seen them fly off a carrier deck. If I would have known then of what I know now, I would have made it a point to see them take off in San Francisco. I love to see the Corsairs take off and all the pilots did a fantastic job. Did the B-25's take off normally like that or were they displaying what it would have been like for a short take off from the Hornet on the Dolittle raid? I know you stated this was for the commemoration but was this the only time WWII planes have flown off a carrier deck? I'm just wondering as I would love to see this in real life today. This video looks to have been posted in 2014 and today was the first time I saw it. Thanks for posting and sharing this.
I was on it and saw it. We were going so fast into the wind them planes were barely moving when they lifted off. I was port side in the cat walk and saw it all. Good memories. The best part was the after show when every plane in the modern usa and every type of ship did the parade. When the stealth fighters and bombers flew by it was reported that they were not picked up by our radar.
Thank you so much for uploading this video. I was there on the deck watching as well. I was in G-3 weapons dept. I tell people about this all the time if they are aviation buffs, was an amazing thing to see in person. In my 40's looking back now still seems like just yesterday. Go NAVY :)
Nope, One B-25 was carrier catapult tested using the U.S.S. Shangri La (CV-38) in November 1944 and two B-25's took off from the USS Ranger (CV-61) on April 18th, 1992 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Doolittle raid. b-25history.org/history/carrier.htm
I was V2 on the Stennis from 2000-2005 We showed the World Premier of the 2001 'Pearl Harbor'. Many call it a flop, it sorta was but it was what it was. Met many stars but what I recall the most was the craning of WWII Aircraft on the Stennis from the Air and Space museum in San Diego, and other places I guess. I wish we could have launched them but they had a garage door styled big screen made on the ship as we transited to Hawaii. I recall Russia inquiring what we were doing.. least, that was the rumor until we saw a ragmag did an article about it too lol. These were the days before 9/11 now try to do this? yeah right.
That was really great to watch! As a pilot, I wonder how fast the Carrier was going (32knots??) and into how much natural wind he was running (adding more knots). Early in the cold war some early jets on the carriers had real issues being launched if there was no wind as the speed of the Carrier wasn't enough etc etc. - The catapults were perfected later. To take part in Carrier Aviation was always a dream... Really great video, Thanks for posting, really appreciated. Best Regards from Alaska!
My question as well. Someone below said the carrier was making pretty good speed (30+ knots), plus whatever wind was coming over the bow. Added up it's no wonder the B-25s seem to basically levitate off the deck!

I came across a VHS tape from a second camera about eight years ago while volunteering at the Castle Air Museum Restoration Department. GREAT stuff! It also included a dust JATO Fat Albert launch at the end. Enjoy! th-cam.com/video/RnXIsX7LxS8/w-d-xo.html
Michael Estes ... Yup! Robert Conrad’s old Duracell commercials. I can’t see the F4 Corsair without thinking about that show (Bah Bah Black Sheep). Wish it was streaming somewhere.
Yes, the solar ad is too good to be true because you have to GIVE THEM your excess power. I'd rather pay for my installation and SELL back my excess power. The don't tell you that installation costs are under $20k and you'll recoup that after 4 years, and after that, you're on pure profit.
That's beautiful, the Mitchells had plenty of room.
neonjim8 no bombs this time lol
It's impressive to see the F-4U Corsair and F/A-18C Hornet flying together.
I wonder how they all got back to Alameda? Great footage! Never heard of this happening

I Really enjoyed this. My grandfather flew pby's in WWII. f-18's are bad ass, but nothing beats the sound of those old radial engines. Thanks!
I am glad you liked it, I have had this sitting around for years and thought it was about time to share! :)
Our TBM and B-25 were part of it.
I just missed this. I was station on the Carl Vinson in the Fall of '95. As a WWII history buff I would've been in heaven.

I was also in Crash and Salvage aboard the Vinson when this happened.

I was watching on the flight deck. Had a few copies of the original video from the ship but can’t find them. Thanks for posting MM1 McCarthy (nuke)
I remember. They flew the planes off twice that summer, once in San Francisco, and then in Pearl.
I'm honestly surprised some bean counting Navy bureaucrat didn't put a stop to this. I mean, 70+ year old aircraft, no ejection seats, launching from a carrier in open ocean. No way they’d allow this today

Given the choice I'd fly the F-18 once, and keep the Corsair.
Seems like the B25's use as little space as the Doolittle Raiders did to get airborne
We did twice, once off the coast of San Francisco and then again off the coast of Pearl Harbor.
We don't need no stinkin catapults..HA Wonder if any of Doolittle Raiders families were there?
Brings back some memories. CVN-70 1994-1996 OE Division.

I was there DC Div ENG/R2 94-98. Pretty cool to see the video again. Thanks for posting.
Awesome videos posted 👌 thanks
I was there and seen it. One memory that can never be erased. Best way to get to pearl harbor
Beautiful to see these classic warbirds on the move again!

I was aboard can 70 in operation as a has. I love this video.
I was on the Chucky V when this was happening. The President and other US officials came into the boat. It was a neat experience!
VERY nice! Makes me miss the old Forrestal.
Probably the first time a B-25 has been on a carrier since 1940 on the Hornet.
1942
I wonder when the last time a Grumman Goose or Albatross flew from the flight deck of a carrier
Nope, One B-25 was carrier catapult tested using the U.S.S. Shangri La (CV-38) in November 1944 and two B-25's took off from the USS Ranger (CV-61) on April 18th, 1992 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Doolittle raid.

B-25 launched off USS Constellation for the film "Pearl Harbor" with Dick Cole in the co-pilot seat.
WONDERFUL VIDEO, MAN!!!!!!!!!
Thank you very much!
Coolest thing I've seen in awhile...

That would’ve been awesome to be in the service then and experience this. Just awesome.
What's missing here would have been a F6F Hellcat & a SB2C Helldiver.
Thank you!
jaunty17 You're welcome.
@Keith Daniel, feel free to share shipmate!
Was one of those Lynn Hunts B25?

SNJ’s didn’t operate off carriers, even for training, did they?
Yeah, resurrection of Doolittle raiders. SWAG
I bet those motors go one hell of a work out getting off the deck. Wish they would have a C-130 in that mix
Very cool
Bet those WWII pilots had That big a flight deck to take off and land on...
If someday the navy puts second-war aircraft back in operation, I'm enlisted to fly one.
Would love to know what the wind over deck was for these takeoffs....And what safety precautions were taken in case one of them went into the drink?
My question as well. Someone below said the carrier was making pretty good speed (30+ knots), plus whatever wind was coming over the bow. Added up it's no wonder the B-25s seem to basically levitate off the deck!
Its weird to think that probably 96% of the guys on that deck are already retired out. The other 4% well on their way to 30 years.
To all the sailors present, You fucking lucky bastards!
Awesome!
Yup the same Jon.
Sweet! Nice to connect with you again! If you go to my website www.projectnavyhotrod.com and send me an email, I will get you my contact information.
That's just Aviation porn! Just so cool! And those B25's! How many feet were those take off runs?
Incredible. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
where you part of the damage control on the ship??
I was Crash and Salvage.
super cool!
Mike Layman, if you are out there, thanks for the hat around 1995 or so...

Go Navy!💕🇺🇸🙏🏽⚓️
US:WE'LL BRING THIS CARRIER TO WW2
TOKYO:NO PREASE
Haha. SO MUCH room for the planes for takeoff.
Look ma, no catapult!
Wow!
Grumman Hell Cat! Douglas torpedo!Corsair!!!
wrong on that it's a F4F wildcat & a TBM Avenger.
Smart
The second USS hornet
RIGHT after I was discharged...
All I can say is ... BZ
I just put a Duracell battery on my shoulder, and I dare somebody to knock it off! Like this comment, or tell me if you get the reference. 😂
