    I just parted with my PM 655 last week. I have been using it since I purchased it new in 1986. Ironically, it had the same issues as the one you worked on. Gave it to a friend to "play with." He called me two days ago and reported that it works fine now. Kind of sickens me but at least I acquired a vintage Optonica integrated amp and tuner. I am going to miss that amp. We had a lot of good years. Hopefully, my friend can get the same pleasure as I did over the decades. Thanks for keeping these awesome relics alive. I wish I had the skills. Respect.

      Mine also. I have 2 of these. Plus I have 4 HK 100 watt amps. All been in storage since 1999. By my surprise I hooked up one of the Hk integrated amps and forgot how powerful they really were. I put a Klipsch sub on the preout and hooked up 2 large 150 watt large Klipsch bookshelf speakers and shook the whole house. Old stuff was made much better than the new stuff by a long shot.

    I have fixed a lot of these amps and one thing I have found is that you should replace all the little blue Electrolytic Capacitors. As they get leaky and that causes a lot DC offsets and clicks and pops with the switches

    I wish you showed how to remove the front panel and clean (service) the push buttons; I have this same amp and everything works except the push buttons, which make make popping noises when depressed. Volume pot is also scratchy when turned, otherwise the amp works and produces beautiful sound.

    Great video, Mike! I really like you for focusing on restoring older Hi-Fi Equipment (especially from the 80's)
    I recently picked up a silver Harman/Kardon PM625 for Free (after some negotiation)! Even though it is an entry level AMP compared to the one in the Video, I just love the looks and the build quality! Despite being almost 20 years old, from the outside it's still near to mint condition. The Unfortunate thing is, that the audio output is crackling and some inputs don't seem to work properly. When i Took a look inside i noticed that many capacitors were bent, and two of them even melted together. I hope that's the reason for my issues. To be honest that's my first "project" and i'm not experienced in troubleshooting at all, but i'll try to fix it. Do you have any advice for me, or do you know how the damage might have arose?

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nicolas, thanks for your comments and glad you are enjoying the channel! With any electronics troubleshooting, I really need to see the unit. If not me, I'd definitely recommend taking her to an expert in your area. Capacitors need to be tested to determine their status. Parts that look odd, bent for example, to a layperson might be absolutely fine. The crackling and failing inputs relate to the switches and controls in these units. They will need a really deep clean and service. The unit will then need dry joint repair, dead capacitor replacement and full electronic adjustment. This requires experience, skill, parts, test equipment etc, so be careful if you do decide to work on her yourself. Best of luck getting her sorted, lovely old amps for sure!

    Had one of these myself. The speaker terminals did get brittle and break on mine, I just used the speaker "B" ones. The small push buttons on the front lose their tactile feel and get soft. Wish you went in to more detail, espicially on the POT cleaning, but great video anyways.

    I just purchased a PM665 off a seller on ebay for $90. I'm hoping it works fine as is, but I will definitely invest the money to optimize the unit if needed

    I'm a little daunted... facing the prospect of a 'self service' on my PM650 (which is beautiful) but it's picking up a hum. Going to change the main caps first and see how that goes.

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep in mind that picking up a hum is different to a self generated hum, so try to figure out where it's coming from first.

    Love the job you do. Could you elaborate on the "washing" of the equipment please?

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Don, thanks for your comment, much appreciated. One must be very mindful of the risks involved in washing gear and I don't recommend others do this, for various safety related reasons. With this in mind, I won't go too far into the techniques I use, but I use a washing process for very dirty gear that allows me to clean out decades of dirt and crud that build up. I've developed the process over the years, based on the way test and measurement equipment is washed. It involves special cleaners and detergents that remove the junk but are safe on the gear. The drying process is critical as is making sure that certain components don't get wet. there's a bit to it, but it is very beneficial, especially in certain cases and with certain types of gear. I hope that helps!

      @@LiquidAudio Thanks for taking the time to answer my question Mike. I can appreciate your answer. I work offshore (Gulf Of Mexico) on oil & gas platforms maintaining fog horns, navaid lights and fire & gas equipment. I do board repair at home for the company i work for. I wash most of the fog horn electronic controllers with Simple Green and water, but they are heavily conformal coated so they almost look brand new when finished.
      I also dabble in vintage audio equipment and have really enjoyed finding your channel. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks DirtyDon, really glad you found my channel and are enjoying it. Yes, the key is using the right cleaning agents and making sure everything is completely dry afterwards. Conformal coatings are great in marine environments but hi-fi and even test and measurement gear doesn't generally use them as you would know, making things a little trickier.

    The flashing LED at startup indicates it is going through its startup routine, but I hear "boom" on the speakers when it stops flashing. I do not have it on my other amplifiers. Is it a failure or just a feature?

    • @LiquidAudio

      Hearing a loud noise when the unit comes out of protection is a sign of trouble. She should be taken to a specialist with experience working on this model, these amplifiers typically need extensive maintenance at this age.

    Question about cleaning Switches. Hi Mike great video, I've subscribed. I have a PM655 but the switches are very noisy. Specially the bass contour which sends a loud crackling noise to my speakers. I've tried opening it and used DeOxit on them but just can't seem to clean it. What's the best way to service those front switches?

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi FB, thanks for subscribing. With these, a contact cleaner alone isn't usually sufficient. I usually do a complete chassis wash, dry and switch/control service, using a proprietary staged process. My general advice is to try isoprop, followed by high-pressure air, deoxit and lots of switch exercise. If it doesn't do the trick, it's best to get her some specialist service. There will be many other things needed at this age and leaky caps passing DC will only add to the control noise issue.

    I've had to take apart each and every single switch on that front panel, on my given PM665. That series of alps mini DPDT/etc switches where a total disaster. I even took apart and cleaned by hand, each rotary controlled switch.
    the capacitor choices were in the end, a disaster. They died in half the time of known brand name caps. Basically, every single small value electrolytic needs to be replaced.
    So mine is mint, all new capacitors but the power caps original - as they were fine. Not a scratch on it, came with the manual from the original owner, for $50, cdn.
    Basically, take every single switch apart and sand down both sides of the contacts with 2000 to +2k grit sandpaper, reassemble and hope... and she works.. (relays too)
    then, set bias, etc...according to the manual...
    So yeah, I did the TOTAL overhaul. But the return... is owning a mint, good for a decade of use.. PM665.
    Next project..just got, in the box...C-03B and M-03B Luxman pre-power pair.

      @LiquidAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ken and thanks for sharing and great job with your amplifier, very thorough! A couple of points: In my experience, the key issues with these switches are that they are unreliable over time and many repairers and home hobbyists don't know how to service them effectively. They are not up to the standards of the old switches, but the switches don't have to be disassembled to service them effectively in most cases. Over the years, I've developed techniques which work very well and which don't require switch disassembly. This is better for my customers who would not want to pay me to disassemble and service the switches as it would render a unit like this beyond economical repair, for most owners. Disassembling switches for service is a valid methodology if time is of no concern though. You raise an excellent point and that is that relays generally must be cleaned using wet and dry as you've described. Second, I wouldn't describe the capacitor choices as a disaster, it's more complicated than that. Small electrolytic caps are prone to failure over time. The main issue is the thermal design and high internal running temps which cause accelerated failure. Best of luck with the C-03B and M-03B - these were my preamp and amp for many years, classic equipment!

      Maybe but the best most economically viable way I've found to resolve these issues is to clean and service the switches the right way.

    I have PM665 Vxi.. and today when I was cleaning him i put WD40 on whole amplifer.. After I figure out that we should not put wd40 on electronics I have cleaned it with alcohol but not all because I couldnt reach motherboard.. First 2 times didnt work but third time something bum and it worked again.. thx God.. Im sentimental connected with amplifer, when I was young I gave Playstation 2 for Nokia N95 and amplifer... :D Only problem is mute is always turned on :/ But sound work when mute is off normally, only light mute lighting

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, thanks for commenting. WD40 is not meant for this and should not ever be used as a contact cleaner, or to clean an amplifier. The residue must be removed.

    Greetings from Florida USA.
    Found your website earlier today and I must say you are a true professional.thanks for the video.. But Unless I missed it,,,,
    What actually fixed it???
    Just setting the idle and dc offset.
    I bought a pm655 that had no sound and after much beginners troubleshooting,,I cleaned the pots and sound came back on one channel,,then got sound back on other channel by cleaning the trimmer pot,,found that by accident!!!
    Love the sound of 80's hk gear!!!

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dino, I get asked this a lot. I use various washing process which vary depending on the equipment, dirt etc. I avoid showing the details as the methods I use are potentially dangerous if not done correctly, but I may show the details at some point. Definitely never use WD-40 for cleaning hifi equipment though, gentle water-based processes are best.

      Where we live in Perth Western Australia it is dry and very hot,I have litterally washed an amp as an experiment with an old toothbrush,with a few drops of dish washing liquid,and rinsed and left it outside to dry thouroughly for a couple of days,no problem.Just don't hose it down,like you'd wash a car.
