Reminded me of OLF. He said he was thinking of setting up his grain cleaner but then he would have to get some cows to feed the waste stream to. Don’t remember how far back but I remember him using it in the past I think it was to clean barley or wheat. Seem to remember it was an antique that was better than anything they sell nowadays. Good to see the family working together, stay safe, wishing you and your family the best.
Yeah usually just used for seed.... seed has to be MUCH cleaner so it doesn't plug up or otherwise impede the meters on the drill or planter so it can plant accurately. Technically you can re-screen the screenings and shake the remaining grain out, and then dispose of the screenings as trash/debris... helps to have livestock to feed it to though because you NEVER get 100% of the grain out of the screenings, but you CAN get awfully close, so much so it doesn't really matter! Ryan, i am not a farmer, but i enjoy your videos. with this machine, i think the holes need to be the next size up, and the angle that vibrates, needs to be at a less angle. another way i think it can be done, is to slow down the vibrating board.
I work in the oil industry we use shakers to clean drilling mud as you’re drilling. The company I work for owns a company and they also make shakers for food service applications.
It did a great job.but if you want to use it for loading I think it best used a date before you make the run.or use it and move the cleaned corn to another bin for loading. From a truck drivers side it will take to long to use on the day you load up and make the run.
By the looks of the trash that the combine will take out, close the cives a little an turn the fan up, just a little of dialing in an it will be a clean sample even with lots of stalk coming in!!
That and just driving a little slower to give the combine more time to clean... lot more stuff going down to the cleaning shoe takes time to clean it... but your advice on the settings is spot on... OL J R :)
Not like the old fanning mill I used to use for seed grain 4 decades ago. This is much faster with a 1000 bushel/hour capacity. The old mill was probably a 100 bushel/hour on small grain. Nice to see the operation of it.
And the fanning mill did a much better job I'm sure... partially because of the "fanning" part (cleaning fan) which this rig didn't have. This is basically just a powered sifting screen. Later! OL J R : )
Doubt they'd care... they eat around stuff all the time. I read a study they did one time feeding cattle a low-phosphorus diet... the pasture the cattle were on was extremely depleted in soil phosphorus, and so they could feed them phosphorus deficient feeds in which the phosphorus content was carefully measured and monitored, to see what would happen physiologically to the cattle and their health and body processes... Well, partway into the study, they started finding badly mauled and partially eaten rabbits and rats and other vermin/wildlife in the pasture, and were confused by this, thinking it was a problem with some sort of local predators, but it didn't match predation patterns... Turns out on closer observation that the cattle were actually chasing down and stomping wild rabbits and stuff to death, and then eating them as best they could (with their limited herbivorous teeth ill-suited for carnivory) in order to get the phosphorus the couldn't get from the available grass and the phosphate deficient diet they were being fed in the study... The cattle's bodies were short on phosphorus and they were "craving" phosphorus they could get in no other way so they turned carnivorous... which was TOTALLY unexpected by the researchers! Later! I was thinking the machine was doing a bad job looking at the amount of corn not going through the mesh until I saw the volume that was. The fact you can feed all of it (except the mouse) to the cows anyway seems like a no brainer if the time/cost is low enough. I wonder if a fan would be useful underneath to remove the finer dust, not sure how much it builds up inside the silo but would be a minor change given you're already running power out to it.

You could, but for the amount of corn you lost vs debris, it increases the quality of the corn tremendously. Even a 1 to 1 ratio of corn and debris will increase the quality of the grain without adding up to much loss.
Theoretically yes BUT the combine technically doesn't use a screen, it uses an airfoil chaffer, which is basically meant to separate out the grain from the bits of stalk, leaves, chaff, cobs, pods, heads, etc ("material other than grain" or "MOG" as it's called in engineering parlance), so the shape of the chaffer and sieve airfoils are basically overlapping shutters, like a venetian blind over a window-- when you pull the cord the blinds open up wide so you can see through them, and when you pull the cord the other way they close down to overlapping, to block excess light from entering the room and block the view from outside. Standard combine chaffers and sieves operate EXACTLY the same way-- thus the opening between the individual foils is a long slit; the main difference is the top edge of the foils has a "sawtooth" pattern of fingers cut into the edge when they're stamped out of steel sheet at the factory, to create fingers to stir, sift, and agitate the material as it shakes over the chaffer and sieve in the combine, so the heavier grain can fall out. Plus, basically if the stuff that's made it to the grain tank has already gone through the chaffer and sieve ONCE, it is pretty likely that it will AGAIN and thus end up right back in the "clean" grain as it did the first time. Plus, to feed the material through the combine cleaning shoe a second time, basically you'd have to run the ENTIRE combine, and auger the threshed grain into the header, which would feed it into the feederhouse and through the threshing cylinder and concave AGAIN, which would inevitably crack and break some of the grain (rethreshing is the main source of cracked grain in the sample, usually from excessive tailings being returned to the threshing cylinder, which is why a lot of the new combines all use "rethreshers" instead of returning the grain to the main threshing cylinder or rotor where it's more likely to be cracked. IOW, it would cause as many problems as it solved and wouldn't do a very good job anyway. Later! OL J R :)

We have an old wheat grain cleaner made out of wood and has steel mesh sifters similar that one it also has a fan incorporated in it that removes about 97% of the chaff. . Pretty cool invention.
Seems to me that the vibration on that seed cleaner is was to high and the angle of the cleanly bed a bid to aggressive.......slow the vibration and tilt the bed opposite a bit and should work a lot better..

Trash holds moisture and can make the corn hard to store, causing more spoilage, and can create problems later from the moisture causing moldy clumps to form which don't want to flow down into augers and traps making a lot of work/problems later on... Plus they were willing to bring him the thing to use free of charge for some YT exposure, so why not?? Not like he was doing a million bushels LOL:) OL J R :)

We have a bench industries cleaner and it has a blanket on top of screen to keep what you want to keep from bouncing through. Looks good

Pretty similar to the fanning mill of years ago. I can set my coffee mug on it with dairy creamer an give it a stir/shake.
