At any age, her voice is my favourite sound in the whole universe. I could never tire of it. It evolves, it matures, it becomes more agile as the years go by, but it always retains a certain distinctive quality that makes it one of a kind and just immensely pleasing, and I always see the same amazing human being when I look at her beautiful unique face.
Since you only now got around to this one you must not have seen many more. There are so many fabulous songs. Angelina's cover of "You Say" is certainly among the top of her many magnificent live performances. A younger Angelina on the rooftop & TV show is another great one. These days the word Prodigy has been overused however in case of Angelina Jordan I believe that it has been underused. Her comprehension of music and her interpretation of songs are way beyond her years. Even setting aside her amazing unique voice and her technical abilities, the way she touches hearts and engulfs souls with emotions is overwhelming. I listen to her and my goosebumps get goosebumps. I will always come back to the young Angelina because she has done soooo much incredible work for such a young person but I also appreciate the evolution of her growth in every aspect of her life. I'm glad you finally did this one. It really illustrates the grasp that she has on vocalization, control, technique, and style even at a young age. I've watch many reactors react to this video; professional voice teachers and coaches, singers of different genres, musicians all have a very similar reaction "what!", "how!" , "no way!" and just pure amazement. What 9+ year old would sing this song - Angelina!
And...she's reading the lyrics! But she can still completely inhabit this song. As for the Whitney, I have never thought belting was Angelina's thing (though she nails it in The Show Must Go On and captures the pain of Freddie's impending death). You might like her take on I'd Rather Go Blind or Go Easy On Me or Stay (all of which equal the very wonderful originals). Just listen your way through her covers--I like Happier a lot too. You may love it all you like, but it is not true. Angelina is a sole product of her granny's desire to have a super star grand daughter. Angelina didn't realize before long after. I’ve listened to Angelina for 5 or 6 years, almost every day, and to answer your question-I cannot ever decide which Angelina I like best. She blew me away as a child singer, as a teenager, and now in the last month her completely original EP is staggeringly good. Like most Angels, I do not have a favorite Angelina song, but there is a cloud of a few dozen that I listen to over and over. I’m in my 70’s and have followed music all my life. Angelina is easily the best singer I’ve ever heard, and she’s that good across five or six genres. What you heard today is one of the talents Angelina has: take an iconic song, rearrange it herself, pay homage to the original artist, and just kill the performance end of it. What should you listen to next? It doesn’t matter. Pick any title, any genre, any age.

It's unreal like her, from a very young person, she choice to use her incredible passion and understanding through music in a splendid way, especially for these legendary songs. She is definitely the only 9-year-old girl who understands and has the courage and the ability to sing this song from Screaming' Jay, so imbued with his power, and reorganize it according to her musical sensibility and vision. I sincerely believe that this it's the most beautiful version of this song, over 60 years since it was written and there are much of versions of it, also interpreted by great singers. 💛🧡❤ A few weeks ago her new EP "Old Enough" came out, although of course you can't react to everything, you definitely have to listen to the 6 special songs, even if it's just for your pleasure, they are so peculiar and different that also extremely inspiring to a vocal coach in the optical of evolution of voice! Great review, hadn't seen any reactions on Angelina in quite a while from you and was amazed that you had not ever reacted to this particular one, almost a must see in her early history. I too noticed her feet, the first time I saw them, thinking them quite big for a nine year old and wondering if that presaged her future growth like it does for many animals. And today she's over six foot tall and absolutely gorgeous, so I guess, yes, it sort of does. For me Angelina goes way beyond being a special singing talent or a prodigy. She represents what's good in the world, even without the singing, with her generosity and compassion. I hope you will get to reviewing her recently released EP. I love every phase of her development, I find myself rewatching videos for hours. By the way, since she is now 5'10' I think her feet have been telling us to prepare for a beautiful statuesque woman.🤩
At first I had a thought that WE can channel....but I was wrong. It's our loved ones that pass away before us and they're the ones that can choose to channel and live vicariously through someone still "in this dimension"...where we are. It's not our doing or even our choice and I personally think that Angelina was chosen and there are singers that are living vicariously through her. Through Angelina they can continue on and in a way they can perform and sing. This is what I think could be going on. I say all this through experience. I love almost anything she sings, and some of her performances have brought me to tears many times or led me to play them hundreds of times over the years! But having said that, this Cover of I put a spell on you is maybe the most spectacular thing she has ever done. Not only for her age, but by itself. I've seen and heard many versions, like the original from Screaming Jay Hawkins, Nina Simone, Bette Midler in the movie, Creedence Clearwater Revival and many more, but none of them is as impressive as this little lioness! Angelina at any age is definitely a phenom. I’ve never heard a cover she has sung that I didn’t think contained more soul and emotion than the original. Now at 17 years old, with her new EP, has melded Nina, Billie, Aretha, Ella, Etta, Sarah, Bessie and others together and brought them all with her into the 21st century! It puzzles me when people are quick to make the Amy comparison. Where do they think she got her sound? From the same music Angelina got her influences from. It shouldn’t be such a big surprise that they sound similar.
Its not just her vocal prowess either, but its her emotional connection to what she is performing. There are grown adults with years of life to pull from who don't connect like she does. Easily a God given talent!!!!
Angelina was 9 years old in this performance (the video was posted after she turned 10) - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the vocal arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version and communicated to the band how she wanted it to be played - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with some of the same band members at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. The first thing she says is that she wants to start, followed by her saying she wants to start over, later she tells the pianist that the key is too low and that she wants to raise it a half-tone, then at the end of the song she changes the ending on the fly. Tara, when she was 6 she went to a studio and sang I Who Have Nothing. It was her first time in a studio and after she finished the song she asked did I do well? The technician said, for your first time, you did VERY WELL! Some of the studio band members (piano, for instance) are semi-regulars with her and practice for her summer jazz festival circuit. They are probably the ones who brought her to the attention of the producer.

Angelina is a Child prodigy, influenced and introduced to Jazz music by her grandmother, who loves old jazz recordings. The band during this studio session was so impressed with her arrangement of "Screaming Jay Hawkins's" 1956 classic, that they nicknamed her "The Bross!"
Angelina absolutely captivated me when she was only 7. I'm not an expert on vocals at all, but this child had me enthralled. I could not wrap my mind around how someone so young could (or would even want to) sing songs written half a century or more before she was born with such understanding, such passion and such commitment. To me, I was seeing a miracle happening before my eyes. This conviction has not wavered over the years and now, as a grown, 6-foot tall beauty, she continues to impress and amaze me. Was she a prodigy? Absolutely! Her TH-cam record proves this beyond a doubt. The fact that Republic Records (not a shabby outfit) has built a personal studio for her even before she has produced an album only confirms my belief. It is impossible to choose which Angelina I like best as they are truly one and the same. It is the evolution of her artistry that is so captivating. In the nine year old, you can see the hints of what she will become at 17. And at 17, one can only imagine what she will evolve into in the years to come. But this I know, she was born to sing, a gift from God to this world. And I believe she accepted that responsibility at an early age and lives it to the very depths of her being.
Suspicious Minds Angelina is my favorite. The opening phrase is the broadest fullest warmest well placed notes I’ve ever heard anybody sing ever. She carved emotions out of. Wood and turned them into notes covered in wool. She totally rewrote it into a painful ballad about distrust and gave the lyrics the proper weight of the subject and not some vegas horn band jangle pop over repeated.

Angelina is very involved in almost every arrangement of every song she sings, since she was still a little girl: the arrangement of this song is mostly hers. I like Angelina's voice, no matter her age. Of course: being 17 now she has a different sound (it would not be o.k. when that had not happened), but again: I like both. It is just a privilege that the team around her has given us all these video's on TH-cam so we can see her entire musical journey from the (very) early days till the present time, including rehearsal videos: it really is a musical treasury. I think I have heard every song from Angelina, and every one of them has moved me so much. She is going to be one the greatest stars there's ever been, but this particular song at the age of 9, needs to be studied by professionals for decades to come. I don't think there has ever been any vocal performance close to this by anyone else under the age of 10 before.
Tara, even at 9 years old everything she does is intentional. Of course she has a God given gift but she is brilliant and works very hard at her trade. She is so much more than a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime singer. Think about the question you asked us: Do we like her more as a 9 year older or as a present day 17 year older who is about to take the world by storm! She is refining her abilities since she was (? since she was born??) very young and we love her equally at any age because we love 'who she is'. I love all of Angelina Jordan from her earliest forays into a studio until now at age 17 with a six-song EP announcing her first album of all original music. The rest is due to drop in the Fall, apparently. She is in Norway right now for a project. By the time she is 18 (by mid January 2024), she'll be getting ready to tour with that new album. Hi Tara. Your reaction was quite entertaining. She's not a typical prodigy, iMHO. She has surpassed all measures of being one, and MUCH MUCH more. It's not only the vocal abilities that set her apart, but the reinterpretation of legendary songs which we thought were perfect and no one dared to touch! I’ve listened to Angelina for 5 or 6 years, almost every day, and to answer your question-I cannot ever decide which Angelina I like best. She blew me away as a child singer, as a teenager, and now in the last month her completely original EP is staggeringly good. Like most Angels, I do not have a favorite Angelina song, but there is a cloud of a few dozen that I listen to over and over. I’m in my 70’s and have followed music all my life. Angelina is easily the best singer I’ve ever heard, and she’s that good across five or six genres.

Absolutely phenomenal arrangement by our barefoot Princess , Angelina actually arranges this version herself paying tribute to the original artist Screaming J Hawkins a blues musician from the 1950s , Angelina is commanding the performance she is the boss, I’ve been following Angelina ever since she won Norway’s Got Talent at 8 years old, she is a musical genius,I attended Angelina’s live concerts in her hometown In Norway 🇳🇴 in the summer of 2022 her stage presence was stunning her live vocals phenomenal, Angelina is 17 now and she signed with Republic Records at 14 years old , Angelina’s uncle is her Manager and Angelina’s Grandma is her greatest influence, Grandma Mery introduced Angelina to Jazz and the old classic songs when Angelina was one and half years old, great reaction thanks 🙏
Great review, hadn't seen any reactions on Angelina in quite a while from you and was amazed that you had not ever reacted to this particular one, almost a must see in her early history. I too noticed her feet, the first time I saw them, thinking them quite big for a nine year old and wondering if that presaged her future growth like it does for many animals. And today she's over six foot tall and absolutely gorgeous, so I guess, yes, it sort of does. For me Angelina goes way beyond being a special singing talent or a prodigy. She represents what's good in the world, even without the singing, with her generosity and compassion. I hope you will get to reviewing her recently released EP. It's nothing short of amazing as well.
I love every phase of her development, I find myself rewatching videos for hours. By the way, since she is now 5'10' I think her feet have been telling us to prepare for a beautiful statuesque woman.🤩
At first I had a thought that WE can channel....but I was wrong. It's our loved ones that pass away before us and they're the ones that can choose to channel and live vicariously through someone still "in this dimension"...where we are. It's not our doing or even our choice and I personally think that Angelina was chosen and there are singers that are living vicariously through her. Through Angelina they can continue on and in a way they can perform and sing. This is what I think could be going on. I say all this through experience. I love almost anything she sings, and some of her performances have brought me to tears many times or led me to play them hundreds of times over the years! But having said that, this Cover of I put a spell on you is maybe the most spectacular thing she has ever done. Not only for her age, but by itself. I've seen and heard many versions, like the original from Screaming Jay Hawkins, Nina Simone, Bette Midler in the movie, Creedence Clearwater Revival and many more, but none of them is as impressive as this little lioness! Angelina at any age is definitely a phenom. I’ve never heard a cover she has sung that I didn’t think contained more soul and emotion than the original. Now at 17 years old, with her new EP, has melded Nina, Billie, Aretha, Ella, Etta, Sarah, Bessie and others together and brought them all with her into the 21st century! It puzzles me when people are quick to make the Amy comparison. Where do they think she got her sound? From the same music Angelina got her influences from. Angelina was 9 years old in this performance (the video was posted after she turned 10) - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the vocal arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version and communicated to the band how she wanted it to be played - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with some of the same band members at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. The first thing she says is that she wants to start, followed by her saying she wants to start over, later she tells the pianist that the key is too low and that she wants to raise it a half-tone, then at the end of the song she changes the ending on the fly. Tara, when she was 6 she went to a studio and sang I Who Have Nothing. It was her first time in a studio and after she finished the song she asked did I do well? The technician said, for your first time, you did VERY WELL! Some of the studio band members (piano, for instance) are semi-regulars with her and practice for her summer jazz festival circuit. They are probably the ones who brought her to the attention of the producer.

Tara, I reacted the same way the first time I watched Angelina's video, a 9-year-old singing like an old jazz singer from "Back in the Day!" Angelina is a Child prodigy, influenced and introduced to Jazz music by her grandmother, who loves old jazz recordings. The band during this studio session was so impressed with her arrangement of "Screaming Jay Hawkins's" 1956 classic, that they nicknamed her "The Bross!"
Angelina absolutely captivated me when she was only 7. I'm not an expert on vocals at all, but this child had me enthralled. I could not wrap my mind around how someone so young could (or would even want to) sing songs written half a century or more before she was born with such understanding, such passion and such commitment. To me, I was seeing a miracle happening before my eyes. This conviction has not wavered over the years and now, as a grown, 6-foot tall beauty, she continues to impress and amaze me. Was she a prodigy? Absolutely! Her TH-cam record proves this beyond a doubt. The fact that Republic Records (not a shabby outfit) has built a personal studio for her even before she has produced an album only confirms my belief. The best in the business - with the greatest head of hair in show business to boot.😎

It is impossible to choose which Angelina I like best as they are truly one and the same. It is the evolution of her artistry that is so captivating. In the nine year old, you can see the hints of what she will become at 17. And at 17, one can only imagine what she will evolve into in the years to come. But this I know, she was born to sing, a gift from God to this world. And I believe she accepted that responsibility at an early age and lives it to the very depths of her being.

Suspicious Minds Angelina is my favorite. The opening phrase is the broadest fullest warmest well placed notes I’ve ever heard anybody sing ever. She carved emotions out of. Wood and turned them into notes covered in wool. She totally rewrote it into a painful ballad about distrust and gave the lyrics the proper weight of the subject and not some vegas horn band jangle pop over repeated.

Angelina is very involved in almost every arrangement of every song she sings, since she was still a little girl: the arrangement of this song is mostly hers. I like Angelina's voice, no matter her age. Of course: being 17 now she has a different sound (it would not be o.k. when that had not happened), but again: I like both. It is just a privilege that the team around her has given us all these video's on TH-cam so we can see her entire musical journey from the (very) early days till the present time, including rehearsal videos: it really is a musical treasury. And I have lots of respect for them: they have been very successful in protecting Angelina for "hunters" from the media and the music industry. Yes, singing is her life and she is living for it... because it is her passion. But till now in her own pace and most of the time away from the big spotlights. I do not know if you have watched it already, but a good way to learn more about Angelina is a British TH-cam documentary "Born to sing, Angelina Jordan, the early years 2006-2014". I think I have heard every song from Angelina, and every one of them has moved me so much. She is going to be one the greatest stars there's ever been, but this particular song at the age of 9, needs to be studied by professionals for decades to come. I don't think there has ever been any vocal performance close to this by anyone else under the age of 10 before.
Tara, even at 9 years old everything she does is intentional. Of course she has a God given gift but she is brilliant and works very hard at her trade. She is so much more than a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime singer. Think about the question you asked us: Do we like her more as a 9 year older or as a present day 17 year older who is about to take the world by storm! She is refining her abilities since she was (? since she was born??) very young and we love her equally at any age because we love 'who she is'. I love all of Angelina Jordan from her earliest forays into a studio until now at age 17 with a six-song EP announcing her first album of all original music. The rest is due to drop in the Fall, apparently. She is in Norway right now for a project. By the time she is 18 (by mid January 2024), she'll be getting ready to tour with that new album. You pointed out her foot size---I believe those feet presaged her towering height, which only adds to her already commanding presence.
