I was blessed to see the Concertgebouw Orchestra with Maestro Chailly on tour in Hartford, Conn. some years back. They performed the Brahms Double Concerto, and the First Symphony. Such a fantastic orchestra, playing such great music. I love Brahms more than I do any other composer. To hear his music played by a world-class ensemble is pure bliss.
Fantastic to hear this great overture played by the world's finest orchestra and in sound that captures that unique acoustic of the wonderful concertgebouw Thanks for this upload.
the work of great composers like Brahms, more than any other human venture, have come closest in human knowledge to revealing whether there is anything beyond the realm of material existence
Anyone who thinks Brahms is a classical romanticist needs to listen to this intensely tragic romantic music--there is no way one could mistake B. for the other B--Beethoven. The level of emotional expression gives Tchaikovsky a run for his money--the difference here being that the 'tragedy' is not completely unleashed nor is it personal--so it is , yes, 'classically' held in check--but the 'romance/tragedy' is there for sure.
No doubt about that though there are a few others than come very close. Today countless millions are spent on so-called "starchitect" (yuk) designed concert halls but they invariably fail to measure up to the incomparable Concertgebouw, Amsterdam
ESTA OBRA DE BRAHMS É UM MAGNÍFICO EXEMPLO DE MAESTRIA E INSPIRAÇÃO ROMÂNTICA. CONTRAPONTO SÁBIO, HARMONIA MAGISTRAL, DESENVOLVIMENTO ESTUPENDO E ORQUESTRAÇÃO CHEIA DE EXPRESSIVIDADE ABSOLUTA. SIMPLESMENTE É UMA OBRA MONUMENTAL.
Brahms is Brahms ..no other ...he is not romantic neither classic...he writes music the way he knows...nothing fancy it is absolute music...which commenced with Bach ...then Beethoven and then Brahms. The motives of his themes are exploited to innumerable ways. He never leaves you with nothing to here. His counterpoint is unique. A master of his music. I love Brahms.
Exactly. He has both feeling AND intellect. Tchaikovsky is his equal but he only appeals to my heart. However, Bach (Mass in b minor) and Beethoven (Eroica) cannot be trumped in my view.
I usually admire Daniele Gatti but this performance finds him way off form. "The Tragic" is one of my favourite overtures but this is absolutely lifeless and dull despite having one of the world's best orchestras. Karajan made a recording in the early 70's for EMI which absolutely blows this into the weeds, the best by far I've ever heard.
I agree entirely - that EMI record is his best of the several he made. As for this performance, well, I just think it shows how standards gave plummeted.
Do you know what year exactly? I found one for 1970 wasn't sure if that was it or not. Most of the time this piece sounds like its being played too fast
It first came on for me when I was going to kill Sinjin as the shroud. Every time it comes on it reminds me of an assassin in WWII climbing the stairs trying to kill an SS Officer with a Luger.
I didn't realize that the dynamic marking for the entire overture was "mezzo-forte". I found this to be an uninspiring performance of one of Brahms's most inspired works. Tragic.
+Collin Bracey Wasn't even a good rasping hack. More of a nervous, little, attention-seeking chirp. At least at 8:02 it sounds like the old beggar just expired.
That describes pretty much every Concertgebouw performance - fantastic musicianship, beautiful sound, rightfully considered one of (if not the) best orchestras in the world, but horrendously dull. No soul or vitality, it's not music as much as the sound of music if it were perfected having all human imperfection removed from it... boring boring boring.
The tempo instructions are Allegro non troppo. Further at the reprise they are"pesante" and Molto piu Moderato. Gatti does it perfectly. I think he is a great young conductor! To those who it is boring, I think they expect Brahms to be Beethoven. He is not...More than that Brahms is not Schubert. For me it's an excellent performance for a great overture, better than Bernstein and Klemperer!
This is when a fabulous orchestra plays an excellent overture very boring. In my taste this performance does not any excitement or frenzy. Under Daniele Gatti’s baton music run aground. This is not just tempo. If you compare it with Leonard Bernstein which chose nearly the same tempo but the result is unbelievably excellent. I extremely recommend Bernstein or Otto Klemperer.
+Chejaaleb I do agree for 100 %. It is reaaly a horror. Try for ideal performance also Walter, 1960; CSO. Here in youtube. Fire, clarity ,colour and shine. How FGS could the KCO choose Gatti their chief conductor, after this collapse with Brahms ?
Che, you are most welcome. I love to find co-enjoyers of forgotten or not too wellknown renditions. The difference between this KCO performance, under their new chief to come, and Walter is unfathomable. If one doesn't know this masterpiece yet, one could think of the Gatti perf.: this is impressionism by a French composer. We love Bruno Walter !
+Chejaaleb When the piece is a work of genius and the orchestra is as accomplished as the Royal Concertgebouw, there's only one person to blame for a performance as listless as this.
It's such a shame when an orchestra as fantastic as this is led by a conductor who has no idea what he's doing. No idea how to balance the orchestra, no grasp of voice leading or form... Basically no understanding of Brahms's music at all. I could barely get past the first minute.
This is a very unfair, unjustified and hostile commentary. There is nothing wrong with this performance of this work, neither musically nor techically. It may not be to your taste for some reason. Say it so. But it is absolutely inapropriate to use such insulting language for anybody to exress his/her subjective /personal/baseless opinion.
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra en Daniele Gatti zijn geweldig samen ! Prachtige, uniek team. Gefeliciterd !
This is the most genial and phantastic interpretation of Brahms music ever heard.
This is simply marvelous. One of the top five overtures ever written. And the execution by the RCO is just master class.
You have to be the best of the best to join this orchestra.
one of my top 10 pieces of music ever.
Tell us your top 10 :)

Truly a magnificent orchestra in this recording !
Fantastic to hear this great overture played by the world's finest orchestra and in sound that captures that unique acoustic of the wonderful concertgebouw
Thanks for this upload.
The reverb from this hall is splendid... it matches the drama of the music perfectly
If you have never visited this hall, you MUST - the perfect, and I mean perfect, sound for classical music
Great Orchestra!
I have heard them at the Kennedy Center many times.
Bravo!
Very fine version. Thank you for posting.
Well done. Since my very young age love Brahms
the work of great composers like Brahms, more than any other human venture, have come closest in human knowledge to revealing whether there is anything beyond the realm of material existence
Echt ausgezeichnetes Orchester!
Marvellous! Beautifully emotionall. Also love his piano concertos. Dorothee

Excellent, very clear video
this is the greatest musical space in the world
No doubt about that though there are a few others than come very close. Today countless millions are spent on so-called "starchitect" (yuk) designed concert halls but they invariably fail to measure up to the incomparable Concertgebouw, Amsterdam
My favorite performance of this piece ❤
Absolutely fantastic. What a conductor, what an orchestra and what a performance! Dank U wel, Tim!
thanks for this wonderful music and video!
best performance from this piece✊🏻
One of the best versions that I've heard is from the late 30s/early 40s, recorded by the RCO with Eduard van Beinum conducting.
Thanks your recommendation may be the slightly slower recording I've been looking for!
this piece is so great!

I love Brahms

The orchestra is top...super...

For some reason which I cannot totally explain why, this music seems ( at least for me) to represent the true soul of Germany and its people.
According to experts, this is the best. ^
I do agree though, this is a beautiful piece.
One the great composers & only 155781 viewings since 2010 ?
+Trevor Johnson Well, the performance is a bit boring...
FANTASTIC!
Will go this Sunday to be presented in Sala Nezahualcoyotl at the Unam directed by Maestro Arturo Dimecke
very beautiful :)
I like the most!!
Awesome video :0!!!
Good solid performance. Thank you for the video.
Herr Brahms, my hero!
Mind boggling that people choose to listen to all the garbage that is popular today when they have such tearfully beautiful music to enjoy.
Of the 100s of overtures, THIS is my favorite. Same with the d minor concerto. Same with the violin concerto, piano quintet...
I am playing this for my youth orchestra.
You’re not young anymore hahaha
Bravo!!
BRAVO!!!
magnific!

Phillip Cobb sounds good here. I wonder why he didn’t stay longer in this great orchestra.
Gatti has got it!

Just turn it up
This piece presents all tempos dynamics such as p, mp, f, ff.
Look at the complete score in another TH-cam and you'll seu it
4:32 What are you doing, trumpet player?
Nice. Some moments just call for nose contact prior to a perfect execution
erm...why or how should a pianist be heard in this piece?
HOLLAND
Someone fucking had the nerve to cough at 7:02. Jesus christ people get it together.

Éxtasis
Gee someone knew how to write music.
Very dull performance. Way too tempered. However, the sound was beautiful.
+Karl Lieck I absolutely agree.
Bruno Walter’s achievement in 1960 is much better though the recording quality is poor.

I blame the conductor.

@Crystalflurry Well, you must be a heavy sleeper then, because this is fairly loud, intense music.

Walter’s interpretation is fabulous.

More dogmatic statements about questions of taste! There is too much of this at the moment!
