    People, please do your research before saying these people are cruel. Essentially, the heat damages the horns at an early age, and prevent them from growing. it's similar to having someone cut your hair or nails. So long as you don't burn too deep, the goats are fine, and there's no actual damage done! As for the crying, most of the time, they start crying and such because their afraid of being hurt, which is natural, and they simply can't get away from what they believe is danger. I've done this with a very young goat who didn't cry at all. So, as I said, please do your research before calling them cruel.

      Bobbi Becker lol so you would rather them have a lifetime of being in danger from being cut, scratched, poked, eyes being damaged like blindness, teeth knocked out, udders ripped, head butted,rammed etc? Then them go through 4 seconds of pain. I don’t see it as abuse at all. It does depend on the situation though.

      It's literally nothing like getting your hair or nails cut. It's more like getting your nails cut off completely and then burned so they can't grow back. Fingernails are meant to be weathered, just like the teeth of some rodents. That's why they keep growing our whole lives. Goats horns don't keep growing their whole lives. They grow up to a point and then stop. Even trimming goats horns is not necessary or ethical, let alone removing them completely. Maybe you should try doing your research a bit more carefully instead of just believing what you want to be the truth to justify your own actions to yourself.

      Hey! I’m not being negative - just curious. Does it burn down to their skin and burn the surface of their skin? I just think about how being burned hurts so bad. But I guess when you think about circumcising little boys that is painful too, but they don’t remember it and is better to do it when they’re young

      *Bobbi Becker* it is necessary for the safety of EVERYONE it is better to do this to them than constantly being a safety hazard for everyone on the farm. Then can kill each other and themselves with the horns. It is better to let them go through this little pain for 5 seconds then eventually killing each other.

      I have never seen an unaltered unnatural goat get hurt on any farm I have been to hundreds none of them ever tortured babies and they were all perfectly fine they told me it's unnecessary and they do it for show I would never get a goat that looked so unnatural and nasty I would much rather have a happy normal and natural one

    ahh ;-; this is so hard to watch but I completely understand why you guys do it. I wouldn't want my goats to get hurt either, I didn't realize they were dangerous like that.
    But they were over it quickly and even though it must've hurt a lot at first it's for their own good.

      It hurts for only a split second, then the nerves are destroyed. It's like a third degree burn, it doesn't hurt. The goats are much more upset about being restrained in a box away from their mothers. Let them out of the box and back with mom and they're happy again.

    • @fakecubed
      @fakecubed 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are only upset because they don't like being trapped in a box away from their mother. The pain is momentary. As soon as the heat burns the area around the horn it kills the nerves that can register pain so it simply feels numb.

    We let them keep their horns, yes they do sometimes get the horns stuck in the fence , but it's no big deal to me because I keep a close eye on our animals. Their horns are their only weapon ( not much of a weapon, but just the looks of the horns might deter predators ) I have only been hit with one horn so far and it was an accident, goats are some what like dogs if you raise them from babies they are pretty tame.

      yet it doesn't. no harm was done to the goat. if you are a goat owner, then your baby goats must cry alot. we humans as babies cry. the goat was not crying because it was harmed, but if you take a baby away from his mother, he\she will cry. this is what happened with the goat.

    I'm not sure if you're aware, but disbudding can actually kill pygmy breeds very easily, as the heat can make the brain expand causing them to die. I understand doing it for larger breeds, but it's too high a risk for me

    I love the bucklings color! We always disbudd them unless the owner wants horns. Our only horned goat is our first dairy goat that we can't bear to sell. I do find that during the summer she stays cool even with a shaggy coat. We also can not show horned dairy goats at fair.

    Animals are so resilient. I listened to a TED talk with Mike Rowe and he talked about a sheep farmer that would castrate with a knife. He asked wouldn't it be more humane to band them?? The man said when they get banded , they can barely walk for 3 days and until it is done they are depressed and in serious pain. When you cut them they are in pain for a matter of minutes and quickly back to being happy sheep. Animals don't dwell on pain like humans do, they just keep on trucking!! Ever seen a 3 legged dog? They run as if life is amazing, not bothered by a missing leg!! I wish we coukd be more like animals in that way !

  • @Guildbrookfarm

    I love these vlogs. I appreciate you showing the goat disbudding and how the babies were "over it" pretty quickly. While it may be controversial, it is safer for some situations. You can't argue with wagging tails! We are hoping to get goats this year and you are our most trusted source for goat info. I laugh every time I see your insert for "why you need goats now". Yes! I need goats! I will be reviewing your blog and vlog to refresh my knowledge. Thank you for all of that!
    Also, you are funny with your labels and organization. I am a bit OCD with it myself :0)

    • @MomeGnome
      @MomeGnome 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wagging tails can have loads of meanings. It isnt jsut when they are happy. Animals hide their pain very well, too. Disbudding is horribly painful. Horns, especially budding horns, are full of blood vessels and nerves. This is not a necessary practice, at all.

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The same can be said of many things done to both livestock and humans such as circumcisions, castration, piercings, vaccines, surgeries...the list is endless. In the end, it is a personal choice that is usually made with the best intention in mind. The best choice for one person isn't always going to be universal.

    • @fakecubed
      @fakecubed 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disbudding causes third degree burns around the horn. There are many nerves, yes, but these are killed by the heat. Ask a human what a third degree burn feels like and they'll tell you it's not painful at all because those pain receptors are dead. The area simply feels numb.

  • @rsoubiea

    We show dairy goats and ADGA will not allow them to be shown with horns. I can draw blood, trim hooves, give boluses (most of the time), neuter males and give shots. But I'm with you, disbudding is definitely the most distasteful thing we have to do!

    • @tammiturner1308
      @tammiturner1308 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Same here. I absolutely hate disbudding especially since it has to be done on the little ones. On the flip side we had horned goats and my daughter got hooked in the corner of the eye. It was an accident as the goat was not being mean just swatting a fly. Also our horned goat got another goats ear and ripped it from the very top to the bottom. It was awful. It bled so bad and the ear couldn't be repaired. It healed as two flaps.

    • @samward6342
      @samward6342 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nancy Collins there's no pain though.. it's like saying your hair or nails have nerves. it might be uncomfortable at most due to the high heat, that's about it. so long as you don't go too deep, that is. which it seems they were really shallow compared to most goats.

    • @meikoblock
      @meikoblock 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ummm, let's see you burn your nails done to the skin and then let us know if it hurts or not. I get that this may be necessary to do but let's not pretend it does not hurt the animal.

      +Sam Ward Horns, all horns, have blood and nerves in them. Please, stop spreading this misinformation. Horns are NOT the same as fingernails on humans. They are more like dog toenails. There is a "quick" inside. Google "goat horn anatomy" and you will see. Buds are especially sensitive. They burn them out because it also stops the bleeding. There are toosl to cut the buds out, but there is a lot of blood. Burning solves that problem. All methods of horn removal are incredibly painful.

    I couldn't watch but I'm sure it's necessary. Hopefully there's some anesthesia that could be applied topically or just around where the burning takes place by injection. I'm sure there are nerves in the area and the baby goats feel that pain and it's sad but it does seem overall like a necessary procedure for a domestic goat. Kinda like being circumcised.

    I'm more curious why you leave a dog choke chain on your goat (Luna?) while it's running around free. Is that something that is normally off, but was only put on while she was supervised? I know you brought up that removing the horns can prevent a goat from becoming caught in something leading to injury or death, but then have a metal choke chain on your goat that could very well do the same thing if they're not supervised constantly while wearing it...

      They don't . Only Americans believe that. We have goats with horns all over here, even at pet farms and they AND the children are perfectly fine.

    i understand what you are doing.
    i had my goat's get their head stuck in cattle panel and in sheep fencing.
    i just use barb wire spaced every 6 inches and 3 strands of electronic wire to keep them in.

    I tweeted this as well, but I wasn't sure of the best way to contribute. I read an older article on your blog where you discuss injecting an essential oil (clove?) in to the buds to prevent the growth. I got the impression that it was successful, why back to the burning method?

    • @Weedemandreap

      We do clove oil if we're going to raise them, and disbud when selling.

    Now, how do you feel regarding the horns versus predators? Our goats will, of course, be locked up safe at night. However, I live in a high predator risk area. Coyote is a nightly visitor, bears and bobcat frequently, porcupines not as deadly but man they're huge here. Not as common to see these creatures in daylight but very real possibility and we certainly have. Would predator risk change your personal decision to debud?

  • @tazzyslady

    In your defense, I disbud my goats also. They are screaming as soon as you restrain them in the disbud box. It's a job I dislike but I won't take the chance that one of my grandchildren will get hurt by a playful goat with horns. The way it is now, the grand kids are allowed in the gate to play with the goats as much as they want and everyone is happy, including the goats who get extra lovin'. They really are back to playing and nursing right afterward.
    This video is one that I watched to help me make that decision.

    We keep the horns just because we haven't got anything to burn it with. But it really is a dangerous thing, if goats have horns. So many ones have fought already against each other, got quite wounded. Besides the could hurt a person by accident too... xD That is but a late comment I give there...xP Love ur vlogs very much!!

    While I agree this 'should' be done younger, most of the 'dissenters' below are just knee jerking with the usual 'touchy feely' tripe. I dock and dew claw Aussie pups within 72 hours. Some of them don''t even react. Just like those kids, they mostly cry about being picked up and separated from momma. Put 'em back and they just go about their business.

    • @Linda-hs1lk
      @Linda-hs1lk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And why would you dock a pup? Leave those tails alone. There's a reason they have them. So weird for people just cutting off parts of an animal.

    • @karenam2231
      @karenam2231 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Staartie de Hond
      It keeps them healthy and depending on what you use the dog for it prevents injuries and plus my Aussie was born without a tail so stop freaking out it’s natural they were bred to have no tail for hurding purposes it doesn’t hurt them to bad.

    • @Linda-hs1lk
      @Linda-hs1lk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolute NONSENS. If that would be true all the dogs in a lot of European countries would be chronically ill. Preventing injuries? Taking care of your animal you mean. And sometimes it happens they're born without a tail but that's not natural. It's been bred into them or a freak accident. And EVEN if it IS natural then it's NOT natural for those dogs born WITH a tail. Cutting off parts of an animal is totally insane. You want to keep your dog healthy? Take good care of it.
