I have an explanation for the cat one. There's a hole beneath the cabinets that's big enough for a cat to get into and small enough not to see. My cat does this in my house as well. If freaks me out but it's just a little kitty hideout under the cabinets.

I've got a hatchet under my bed, a butcher knife under my couch, and an ax handle by my door. After having several unknown persons over the years try to break into my place while I was home (happened at multiple different locations that I've lived), you learn to be ready just in case they manage to ever succeed.
If you're a small woman like I am, I would also recommend you take some form of self defense classes as well. You need to know what to do if you find yourself in a dangerous situation with nothing around to use as a weapon but yourself.

Life saving tip: animals that are in the feline family mainly lions, tigers and cheetahs are ambush predators which means they'll only attack if you're faced away from them, maintain eye contact with the animal and back away slowly until they're out of view make sure you're not being followed
