    I am so glad I came across your channel. Thank you. Two of my questions were asked by two viewers to which you have answered. Usually most questions are never answered at other channels. Very grateful.

    I would like to explain why taking antioxidant supplements can reduce the effectiveness of radiation therapy in cancer patients. Radiation therapy is based on the concept that cancer cells have a significantly higher labile iron pool compared to normal cells (approximately 1000 times higher). When radiation interacts with this iron, it generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that lead to the death of cancer cells through a process called ferroptosis. Antioxidants work by scavenging these ROS, which can ameliorate the effectiveness of radiation therapy.
    It's important to note that Artemisinin and high-dose vitamin C also exploit the same mechanism of action in their anti-cancer effects. While antioxidants are beneficial for cancer prevention, individuals with cancer who are undergoing a killing phase using pro-oxidants should refrain from taking antioxidants during that time. This "press-plus" strategy has been proven effective in fighting cancer. During the killing phase, it is recommended to use high-dose vitamin C (as a glycolysis inhibitor) and pure EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate) not the whole green tea extract as an inhibitor of glutaminolysis (specifically GDH1 inhibition) simultaneously, while maintaining a ketogenic diet. The simultaneous use of these compounds has synergistic effects, effectively depriving cancer cells of their main energy sources.
    It is crucial to understand the timing and context in which antioxidants and pro-oxidants are used in cancer treatment to maximize their effectiveness. The press-plus strategy has shown promise in starving cancer cells and can be a valuable approach in the fight against cancer.
    Please note that this information is based on scientific research and should be discussed with healthcare professionals for personalized advice and treatment plans.

      Thank you for the discussion.
      Laboratory-based evidence needs careful interpretation. It should not be used directly onto clinical situations.
      We have learned important lessons in our trials of antioxidant for cancer prevention or avoidance of cancer treatment side effects.

    As cancer in the vital organs is always fatal, by giving the anti oxidants if it can reduce some free radicals in the body, better to give. Whether or not helpful. Unfortunately most of the malignant cancer is always fatal

    • @Dr.WenliLiu
      @Dr.WenliLiu  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That presumption has been proven incorrect. There is good evidence showing harm rather than benefit of antioxidant use in patients with cancer, regardless of late or early stages.

    Fasting is very beneficial for cancer patients

    • @Dr.WenliLiu
      @Dr.WenliLiu  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is not enough evidence to support long term benefit of fasting in cancer patients. Most of the randomized trials of fasting tested feasibility and tolerability of the approach, but without generating long term data. It will still require good quality randomized clinical trials to guide clinical application of fasting as a part of treatment for cancer patients. Here is an article from JAMA showing over 13-hour night fasting was associated with lower breast cancer recurrence rate, but without better caner survival or overall survival benefits.

    I have been dealing with metastatic triple-positive breast cancer for almost 8 years. I only take d3 with k2 supplements. I almost started taking an oral hyaluronic acid supplement before doing additional research, where a study found that HA fuels metastasis and helps cancer travel throughout your body. I have an excellent oncologist who had never heard of this study. Doctors are super busy and can't read all available information, so please be your own expert about your type of cancer.

    • @Dr.WenliLiu
      @Dr.WenliLiu  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for your question. I have not seen any randomized clinical trials or good observational evidence about grape seed extract and prostate cancer, so I don't have a definitive answer for you. The argument of grape seed extract is because of rich proanthocyanidins in grape seeds. Proanthocyanidins and beneficial phytochemicals are rich in fruits and vegetables. And there is a good amount of observational evidence supporting benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption in reducing prostate cancer risk and disease progression.

      Association, even a strong one, does not mean causation. I would interpret it as no clear benefit, but potential harm.
      However, omega-3 rich foods are linked to lower cancer risks. I would recommend obtaining omega-3 from omega-3 rich foods.

    These studies are really tossing me around.
    IF antioxidants were protecting cancer cells. Then the cancer cells would be replicating more rapidly, which in most cases would mean the chemo should have a stronger effect. As the chemo is most often targeting rapidly replicating cells.
    Thanks do you have any insight on this?

    • @Dr.WenliLiu
      @Dr.WenliLiu  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think we fully know the underlying mechanisms.
      One possibility is that Chemotherapy generates significant oxidative stress and produces a vast amount of oxidants, which can attack cancer cells, but antioxidants can reduce the production of oxidant products and/or counter the actions of those products to reduce chemotherapy efficacy.
      On the other hand, many antioxidants have dual actions. When they are in the right amount, they act as antioxidants, but when they are in significant excess , they act as oxidants.
      There is likely much more than that.
      There was a hypothesis that these oxidative stress products can attack different cellular targets, and make cancer cells less vulnerable to treatments, thus hypothesize that antioxidants can reduce such byproducts of chemotherapy and enhance treatment effects. However, the results of clinical trials have not supported this hypothesis.
      I’m eager and curious to learn more. Will keep myself updated as much as I can and share with everybody.
