I worked at HJs for nearly 3 years (in Adelaide), and it's worth knowing that the ingredient boxes they get are literally Burger King branded. They're direct from actual BK.

The "better" & made "your way" is just in comparison with McDonalds. The price has doubled, I waited 15 minutes and was handed a box in a bag that contained the ingredients for an Ozzie burger, but certainly not assembled. Now I remember why I haven’t bothered going there this last five years. What the burgers on the menu board look like compared to what I was given bore no resemblance to each other.
Yeah like any fast food your experience will vary, I’ve had some shit hjs but I’ve also had some shit kfc and maccas. But usually hjs gets it right and when they do it’s genuinely good burgers, not better than a premium burger place like Betty’s or burger urge but still nice.

I worked at HJs for 5 years and I have always called it HJs or hungrys 😂 and when they said they burgers are better at hungry jacks they are comparing it to maccas. The iced coffees are typically $4.50-$5.50 depending on type and size. And if you want to jump into the ordering system to check out the menu and prices, you'll need to skirt the geoblocking, most likely with a VPN that has an Australian end point you can select.
Hey Ryan from the otherside of the tube. As far as I remember BK did try a comeback and compete with HJ but failed and eventually sold stores back in the early 2000. I remember HJ at Brimbank Shopping Centre Originally being Burger King. Food was exactly the same all being burgers were named differently. It's hard to find any info.
That’s right. There was one in Armidale too. I believe Burger King thought they could set ups here & intimidate HJs into letting them or even moving out. They discovered, of course, that they couldn’t.
As an Aussie, my family has allows referred to Hungry Jacks as Hungry's. With Hungry's vouchers you get a lot for cheap, though where I live, there is now close by Hungry's so I have to settle for fast-food Macca's and KFC. Hungry's also uses the word "better" because they are in competition with Macca's.
G'day Ryan! I watched this video a few days ago, and I was about to put in an order just last night for some Hungry Jacks and I noticed at 6:48, HJ's have recently released Chicken Fries as a limited time only menu item, funnily enough with the same artwork on the packaging as BK's. And I thought I would revisit this video to tell you this.
Damn, You made me feel like going to Hungry Jacks haha. Unfortunately my closest one is a 35 minute drive away if no traffic. HJ's is way better than Maccas.
As far as I know, HJ in Australia still means that OTHER thing, if you get what I'm saying. Or someone could be referring to the old HJ car (I can't remember if it was a Ford or a Holden).
about a decade ago all the major fast food chains stopped premaking burgers and had to making to order which means it's not anywhere near as fast as it used to be..... also new australian owned chain brands are so on point macas and hungry jacks have to offer better quality of food. examples of aussie chains: huxtaburger, lord of the fries, bettys burgers, red rooster. etc.
Ryan, that was a pretty cool video, bro. As an Aussie, when we say that we are going to Hungry Jacks for lunch or dinner most of the time we just say we're going to Jack's. Keep up the good work. Ryan, I hope you & your wonderful family are having a really awesome day/night. 🇦🇺✌️🤠🔥🥤🍟🍔

Australia already a local restaurant there called Burger King that had the name trademarked when the American Burger King tried to launch in Australia so it was re branded to Hungry Jacks
I personally love hungry jacks, but my friends perfer other fast way chains. The good thing is that they're mainly grouped together. Sometimes the have a bubblegum storm which is a sunday with lots of bubblegum syrup and marshmellows. Also they have in slushies u can get popping pearls and they r SO GOOD. The burgers are truly better at hungry jacks lol, but it's so overlooked
In Australia that burger will look nothing like that when you get it! For some reason the fast food industry gets away with this false advertising, where other industries never would.
The last time I went to my local Hungry Jacks in Bendigo, possibly two months ago on a whim, the first time in years, they didn't serve any coffee at all, when it's free for seniors card holders at Maccas. That was disappointing. Might check it out again as it's opposite WOOLS-Worths! (For Ryan!)
Hey Ryan the “better” slogans are for comparison to maccas actually, HJ and maccas are big rivals here as there isn’t many take away chains to compete with that mostly make burgers and fries. Hungry Jacks recently restored their Big Jack burger, which maccas complained about in the past being a rip off of a Big Mac. They can come in both beef and chicken varieties. Most people would often get a better tasting burger at a take away shop as someone else mentioned. More likely to include fresher ingredients such as beet root. I am in Tasmania and there’s a lot of nice mom & pop take away places or one off great quality places to eat compared to big name franchise take aways. Once such place is called hash burger, #burger being their branding to tie in with social media popularity etc.

Most people I know say they are going to 'Jacks' when they mean HJ's. "The burgers are better than Macca's' is the inference. They also had 'Flame Grilled' for a long time to distinguish the two brands.
Hey Ryan, Insider Food do comprehensive country comparisons of franchise offerings. The burgers are better at HJs but like some have commented, inferior to local (independent) takeaways. HJ sold the Aussie burger (traditional "works burger") for a long time, for good reason!
The best burgers from HJ and maccas are the double whopper or double quarter pounder because the cheese makes it edible. The sides menu is always changing because they only release dog food garbage.
Australia and New Zealand have a law about false advertising so Hungry Jacks/BK have to give us the food looking like how they are advertised otherwise we riot

A few months late to the party but Hungry Jacks and Burger King literally taste the exact same. I was really surprised when I visited the US and my whopper tasted the same. I thought there might be a slight difference but nope (and while I’m here, American fresh raspberries tasted like Allen’s lollies raspberries. Wild.)
In the early 80's the signs used to say 'Hungry Jack's, home of the Burger King' with the American Burger King logo, then I think it changed to home of the whopper later on.
HJs has chicken fries, but theyre a time-limited menu item. I dont know if its still true, but we used to be a test market in the 90's/00's, where they'd try new things here, and only spread them to other markets if they made it past a certain popularity.
We still had the Burger King, at least in the 70s and 80s (not sure if its still a thing now). If you had a birthday party at Hungry Jacks in, say, the 1970s, you would likely have your icecream birthday cake bought out to you by a guy dressed up as the Burger King (or Ronald McDonald if you had a Macca's birthday party). I don't think it was ever actually explained why Hungry Jack's had a Burger King, we all just kind of accepted it.
HJs was a complete franchise copy of Burger King and the agreement was that HJs will own the exclusivity of the Burger King franchise in Australia under the name of Hungry Jacks but the conditions were that Burger King can NEVER open up in Australia, thus being a kind of Australian brand

I worked at HJs for nearly 3 years (in Adelaide), and it's worth knowing that the ingredient boxes they get are literally Burger King branded. They're direct from actual BK.
I don’t like hungry jacks because the first ever time we got it as a family, not only were parts of our order missing, the lettuce was rotten and the meat was undercooked. I’m not Gordon Ramsay but I can tell the difference between food and shit. I’ve never eaten there since, but it’s always interesting to see different perspectives, and people having good customer experiences rather than the awful one we had
The "better" & made "your way" is just in comparison with McDonalds. Jacks cafe is just the coffee & cake section (it's not popular, if you want a decent coffee/cake, you go to an actual cafe). - Abbreviation for Hungry Jacks in Australia, Millennials may call it HJ's, but everyone else refers to it as "Hungrys" (like Macca's for McDonalds).
Here in OZ the burgers at McDonalds are like eating cardboard, but at HJs the burgers are juicy and they have flavour ❤❤
I disagree. Maccas and HJ are both very good. Of course, I'm in Queensland where everything is awesome.
@@venderstratI’ve been avoiding most Maccas burgers because I hated them in Sydney. Maybe I should give them another go now I’m in Qld.
@@venderstratI’m eating maccas rn. And it’s not like cardboard
@@13_swiftie97 you got the wrong bloke.
How do maccas burgers taste like cardboard? Sure the meat isn't as fresh as the meat in HJ burgers but it's still very tasty
Generally in Australia, you don't see people buying 2 burgers just for themselves. It's a combo a meal for 2 ppl.
Someone has already mentioned Chew and Spew as the way some of us describe Maccas. That’s pretty right but when you’re hungry and all you’ve got is Chew and Spew, that’s where you end up sadly.Hungry Jacks don’t have anywhere near the number of locations either. Their coffee is good, though.
The fact that there are more Maccas across Australia is a significant bonus when you're travelling and need a decent loo 😉
@@Merrid67play The loos are nowhere near as clean as they used to be… they have cut down so much on staff they don’t have time to clean them. My mate was a Limo driver here in Sydney Australia until he passed. Maccas was a daily stop for coffee and a toilet break. Needless to say he knew where they all were.
There’s no doubt they’re better and bigger, everything from the burgers, the chicken and they’ve even nailed the chips they’re a thick cut chicken salt loaded French fry
Back in the day when CB radio was big, hungry jacks was called jacks house I still miss the original yumbo which was a bun ham slices and melted cheese
Yes! Yumbos, every day for lunch. That was in the 80's right? Make my own now on the Breville.
@@majorlaff8682 first had them in the late '70's
I was a late starter. March 28th, 1980. It was a Friday. After that it was one a day for a year or two until their lease ran out and they closed down or relocated. Property owner demolished and re-developed by building a monstrous block of slums.
I worked at HJ's,when yumbo's were around, bring them back, and the Grilled chicken burger, they were off the chain.
It’s because you guys have about 10 different popular fast food burger joints while we for years really only had the two that did BURGERS with drive through etc - and that was Maccas and Hungry Jacks. So the better is better than “the other guy” !
Don’t be fooled, I went to my local HJs the other day, first time in 5 years, ordered an Ozzie Burger.
We do have the chicken fries here mate, not sure why they weren't showing on the menu. And nobody calls it HJ's. My mate went for an interview at Hungry Jacks when we were in high school. He said this chick came out and said "Is everyone here for HJ's?" my mate said "Head jobs?? Yes, yes i am" 😆
I worked at HJs for 5 years and I have always called it HJs or hungrys 😂 and when they said they burgers are better at hungry jacks they are comparing it to maccas. I do remember sometimes when stock came in some boxes would say Burger King but then you would open it and every logo was Hungry Jacks logo. Interesting video!
You have brightened up my evening Ryan 😄👍 Thanks. Hard day at work today but, a laugh makes you feel so good
"The burgers are better at Hungry Jack's" is their advertising slogan and, by, "better", they are referring to McDonald's, their closest competitor.
The iced coffees are typically $4.50-$5.50 depending on type and size.
And if you want to jump into the ordering system to check out the menu and prices, you'll need to skirt the geoblocking, most likely with a VPN that has an Australian end point you can select.
Jack's Cafe was a response to McCafe and our general hunger for half decent coffee (and Starbucks doesn't cut it over here)
Hey Ryan from the otherside of the tube.
An HJ is a car here in Australia. We shorten Hungry Jacks to simply 'Hungry's'.
We've shortened the name to HJ's, we do that. 😂😂
And yet this born-and-bred Australian just calls it Hungry Jacks. We are not all the same.
All possible varieties. Of nicknames or anything.
We’re Aussies.
Funnily enough I actually saw a hungry jacks ad advertising chicken fries tonight
Damn,
You made me feel like going to Hungry Jacks haha.
Unfortunately my closest one
is a 35 minute drive away if no traffic.
HJ's is way better than Maccas.
I would say " Let's go for a Jacks ".
For many years after Hungry Jacks started in Australia, the crowns actually said burger king & had the logo.
As far as I know, HJ in Australia still means that OTHER thing, if you get what I'm saying. Or someone could be referring to the old HJ car (I can't remember if it was a Ford or a Holden).
The large iced coffee is only a couple bucks Australian here in Aussie land! Much cheaper than in America!
about a decade ago all the major fast food chains stopped premaking burgers and had to making to order which means it's not anywhere near as fast as it used to be..... also new australian owned chain brands are so on point macas and hungry jacks have to offer better quality of food. examples of aussie chains: huxtaburger, lord of the fries, bettys burgers, red rooster.
🇦🇺✌️🤠🔥🥤🍟🍔
I remember being confused by the crown as a child. I didn't know of the connection to burger king.
What!! Nothing better than a bit of dead horse on your chips!!
burger bites changed over to chicken fries which will change to something else in a few weeks. The most important thing to remember at HJs is the ice-cream machine works unlike at Macca's
Australia already a local restaurant there called Burger King that had the name trademarked when the American Burger King tried to launch in Australia so it was re branded to Hungry Jacks
We do indeed refer to it as HJ's or Hungrys
Or Jack’s.
Scungy's
the difference is we have much stricter food standards
The chicken fries aren’t permanent on HJ menu but appear promotional for limited times. Yes they are good
I personally love hungry jacks, but my friends perfer other fast way chains.
I'm just impressed that there's a Yank that realises other countries exist outside of the divided states of america.
The shortenings are a recent thing. Was always called Hungry Jack's for a long time
The cross promo that Hungry Jacks had Ozzy Man do in the style of the legendary VB ads was awesome.
(For Ryan!)
We call it "hungrys" over here in Australia
We just call it "Hungrys". I don't recall hearing anyone say "HJs".
must be regional, I've only heard it called HJs
We call it HJS
yeah same here, Im from Perth we call it HJ's
Where do you live where people call it hungrys???
It's HJ's all day in W.A ✌🏼
Definitely HJs here in WA
As an Australian, I always said we going hungry's never known anyone saying HJ
I have always heard it called Jack's
Call it HJs all the time here in Brisbane
@@staples4335 I am only on the Gold Coast, originally from Sydney, but I guess it probably just depends on the groups (age or otherwise) that one operates around. I have heard it called Hungry's, people around me have always called it Jacks, never heard it called HJ's but don't doubt that it would be called that in places
Have always called it HJs in Melbourne
Im in Perth we say HJ's
recently found your channel and enjoying your vids, i grew up here in au, anyway cut to the chase, burgers from mcdonalds (maccas) compared to hungry jacks (yeah we dont say hjs) are night and day, dont get me wrong maccas use good sauces but their burgers almost seem microwaved.. doesnt feel like theres a guy flippin burgers in the back, you go to hungry jacks and its obvious those burger patties have a flame grill taste just tens time better, anyway they recently won some award for like best coffee from a take away place and theyve only been doin it for like 2 years compared to mccafe been around nearly a decade, ive been using that thing on the app you were hovering above buy 4 get 1 free its actually lit, so you buy the medium caps for $2 each through the app (in store or drive thru without using the app is like 3.20 or something) you spend $8 for the 4 medium caps then for the free coffee (buy 4 get 1 free) you can choose a large cap (normally $5) and its a freebie, thats just the tip of the iceberg, they have these app rewards or app deals where you always save at least $5 for meals etc
We say 'Jacks' in Adelaide South Australia
Most people I know say they are going to 'Jacks' when they mean HJ's. "The burgers are better than Macca's' is the inference. They also had 'Flame Grilled' for a long time to distinguish the two brands.
The 2 bacon deluxe for $10 is my lunch tomorrow
Hey Ryan, Insider Food do comprehensive country comparisons of franchise offerings. The burgers are better at HJs but like some have commented, inferior to local (independent) takeaways. HJ sold the Aussie burger (traditional "works burger") for a long time, for good reason!
People quite often drop off Hungry and just call it Jack.
we call it Hungries Cheers
The best burgers from HJ and maccas are the double whopper or double quarter pounder because the cheese makes it edible. The sides menu is always changing because they only release dog food garbage.
Australia and New Zealand have a law about false advertising so Hungry Jacks/BK have to give us the food looking like how they are advertised otherwise we riot
No. They're trying to say that they're better than McDonalds, Burger Joints & Fish & Chips shops, over here no-one gives a shit what gets served in other countries mate.
Wild.)
Do you have to use a vpn (sorry if that’s wrong) to get access to more Australian websites? Just clueless but curious
In the early 80's the signs used to say 'Hungry Jack's, home of the Burger King' with the American Burger King logo, then I think it changed to home of the whopper later on.
HJ’s a Holden car. A Kingswood. Jacks’ll never appropriate the name.
Haha I was just interrupted by a HJs advertisement while watching this. Hi from Australia by the way.
HJs has chicken fries, but theyre a time-limited menu item.
I dont know if its still true, but we used to be a test market in the 90's/00's, where they'd try new things here, and only spread them to other markets if they made it past a certain popularity.
The burger bites were pretty good. I liked them because I could taste pickle. They already got rid of them.
We have chicken chippies, that are a seasonal appearance and come back every now and then on the menu.
We used to have the chicken fries, but they got rid of them and I've been mourning their loss since.
Coming back soon.
7:06 to correct you we do but its seasonal from memory like the mcrib
The Burger King site is what we would have had 40 years ago. The font alone is 50 years old, like a really old Kentucky Fried Chicken site.
HJs is the Pinnacle of Fine Dinning in Australia. You won't find any better. Deluxe Double Whoppers are Life.
Their slogan is "the burgers are better at hungry jacks", hence the 'better' thing. I always preferred HJ's burgers because the 'flame grilled' thing meant they had far more flavour than McD's
It was the public who renamed Hungry Jacks to HJ’s and it flows off our tongues quite naturally 😁
