How to use rosin when soldering

  • Hello friends, how is rosin used when soldering?
This is a very basic question when soldering, but someone asked me how to use it
Nowadays we rarely use rosin alone when soldering
Solder wire with rosin core is usually used, since the rosin of this solder wire is used as a flux, it is easy to solder.
But when we solder, we always hang the solder on the tip of the soldering iron, and then touch the solder joint, because the rosin on the iron tip has evaporated at high temperature.
Without the role of flux, solder cannot be tinned or cold welding may occur.at this time, you can dip the soldering iron tip into the rosin and quickly apply it to the solder joint, this makes it easy to solder.
When soldering the wires, you can first heat the wires in rosin, then tin the soldering iron tip and you can solder the wires.
If it's on a circuit board,Can put rosin powder on the solder joint
Another method is to dissolve rosin in alcohol.

I am just getting started with learning electronics.
I just received my beginner kit and it has a small round plastic tub of "soldering paste" but I had no idea what it was for.
Eventually i discovered it is supposed to be a tub of flux/rosin, but i had no idea how to use it.
    This was very useful.

I've been guessing how to use the solid rosin ... 'cos youtube clips usually show the usage of gel/liquid flux. Thanks for the tip!!

Solid rosin stone can be stored for a long time and cheap while gel flux sometimes gets bad overtime.

There’s a reason professionals use commercially-manufactured flux: it works better than pure rosin. Fluxes contain activators in addition to the rosin, which make them far more active (capable of cutting through more severe oxidation). I made rosin-in-alcohol flux once, and while it’s better than nothing, it doesn’t come close to real flux. I use it for one thing only: to create a protective coating on freshly-etched (homemade) PCBs. The rosin coating prevents oxidation and doesn’t need to be removed before soldering.

@@denmikseb Take a small and cheap paint brush and dip it into the flux to "paint" it on the component you want to solder. Your soldering iron should already have it's tip tinned. If it isn't, buy a tip tinner.
Putting the soldering iron directly on the flux will just evaporate a whole lot of it for nothing as it wont stick on your soldering iron (or very badly due to the high temp).
