    I loved the mom character, her not being motivated by the husband but instead by her kids made her more a character and less a plot element; she felt real. Mom had coped with and moved on from her dead husband and centers her life on being there for her kids. Colt was also a great character because he fit the troope but without being evil. He genuinely wanted to try to protect the boys, for the job and his girlfriend.

      The most real thing that the mom did was she told colt, the boyfriend, that it was family issues. She didn't want Colt to be jealous or worried about the end of their relationship. And the most real moment with Colt, is when he realized that the whole "family thing" was just the boys trying to see their dad one last time, he stopped antagonizing them and started helping them, no questions asked.
      Note: he antagonized them by trying to get the boys back to their mom, probably believing that they had run away from her. Again, he was chasing them, tracking them only knowing that his girlfriend was worried, and the boys were gone.

    I also love how we, the audience never truly see the father. We just see him from behind and in pictures. It really puts us in Ian’s shoes and we can feel the bittersweetness that Ian is feeling. He helped his brother finally say goodbye, but missed his chance to finally meet his dad.

    • @lancethefilmguy9392
      @lancethefilmguy9392 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That is something I did not like. It felt like Ian failed at seeing his Dad. Don't build up a character just for us not to see him. I would have liked the movie more if it wasn't for the typical Disney Twist ending. Those are getting very Cliché lately

    • @Phantomboy129
      @Phantomboy129 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@lancethefilmguy9392 That's missing the point of the story though. Ian struggles with understanding himself and who he wants to be and believes his father is the missing piece. When in reality he's always had that guidance growing up and now needs to believe in himself. Instead it was Barley that never truly had a father figure growing up. And it was Barley that needed to say his goodbye so that he could move "onward" past his grief. This is a much more realistic ending. Ian meeting him at the end would be like him meeting a stranger.

  • @Yickerd

    When they said that the card game was too reliable, I have to disagree, because Barley wasn’t just studying the cards. He was studying the history of the town, not just the cards.

    I don't think the message of the film was anti-modernization. One brother lives anxiously in the modern world; the other is haunted by the past and copes by living in a fantasy. But the last scene takes place in a modern world acknowledging the past. I think the message is basically to just remember and respect the past and you can do that without living in it.

      My thinking when I watched it was that they went on that really long journey because Ian was the one leading them in the wrong direction and that the raven could have been much closer than the movie made it seem. That would also work with how everyone thinks that Barley is a screw up but he really isn't and if Ian listened to him then they would've gotten more time with their dad

    • @Lauren_210
      @Lauren_210 4 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      With Ian and Barely going on that long quest to find the phoenix gem only to land right back at Ian's high school where they started, it's much like how in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry, Ron, and Hermione went on their long journey to find the missing horcruxes only to land right back at Hogwarts where they started and found most of the remaining ones there and fought the war there. It was kinda like dramatic irony but the journeys are what we were invested in and these characters rather than the destination.

Like, "don't come to my party because of me because I'm not interesting or cool, come to my party for cake." Another thing that I found very thought provoking was the overarching theme of doing what you're born to do. Barley tells the pixies that they're supposed to fly and they don't need the motorcycles, Colt learns that his body was made to run and the minotaur starts to fly again. Heck, even Ian figuring out he's meant to do magic.
    They all have these great capabilities that, objectively, seem incredibly obvious, yet they don't see them as positive (eg, Colt had a hard time getting in and out of his car) through Barley, all these creatures realize that the features/talents they were born with IS their strength

    • @thetwizzler8096
      @thetwizzler8096 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Moose The Great III it could also be referring to learning to do what your capable of. Like in all the examples you mentioned they all have this innate potential but then we see that certain things or obstacles have gotten in the way of them realizing their potential. And the secondary characters as well as Ian all go on personal journeys where they learn to connect with said potential within them.

I personally am aromantic and romance repulsed so I really appreciate a story without romance. Because I can’t relate to it, I find that for me romance negatively distracts from the rest of the story and as I said I am romance repulsed as well so it also makes me very uncomfortable and can just really ruin a good story for me. I understand that this is mainly a me thing and that most people appreciate romance in stories but I personally really like it when I come across one without

    I think the mom had grieved, moved on, and had closure on her relationship with the father. She wasn't opposed to seeing her dead husband but she recognized that her sons needed it more.
    I'm sure she would've loved to see her husband again, which is why she sat there with them while Barley was trying initially. But at the end of the movie she sacrificed her chance to see him so that she could help protect her kids and help them get the chance to see him. She was the definition of 'mom' in that moment. She gave up what she wanted to help provide what her kids needed.

    I cried at the end with Barley talking with his dad and Ian watching from afar. I loved how the mum got involved in the story and the non-antagonist step-father figure ( he was trying to help his girlfriend/looking out for the boys). Visually it was lovely, and all the little details mentioned/used that came into play later were great too. I saw Ian and Barley as flipsides of the same coin, Ian being the cautious introvert and Barley being the extroverted, risk-taker. As an eldest of 4 with three successful younger siblings who have all got great careers and are all in serious relationships, I related to both brothers, as, like I am a bit of a screw-up like Barley, as I am just working to get by and am chronically single, but I’m shy/awkward like Ian. Loved seeing Ian at the end, so full of confidence, having friends and living life to the fullest.
    I can definitely see this as a story that Andy might have written, as he must have been quite young when his dad died, perhaps his mum was pregnant with Molly when he passed away.
    I was totally engrossed in the story and would happily watch it again to catch all the signs/visual jokes or Easter Eggs. I give it an 85.

    Being someone who lost my father figure as a teenager and remembers him very well, this movie made me emotional for the whole day. I saw so much of myself in the insecurities and pain that main characters expressed that only comes from losing someone so definitive to everything you thought you knew about life. I left the theater sobbing, which I’ve never done before. This movie beautifully illustrates life after loss. I’m happy that children who have gone through something similar can have a story that relates to them and maybe provides them some clarity because the loss of a parent at such a young age leaves you with too many emotions that you’re not old enough to understand. This movie gets 100/100 from me.

    When Ben was like “You’re always supportive of me” and then later he made that joke about the dad not being a “full fleshed character” and J was just like “that was perfect” (or something like that) that hit hard.
    Also I think it’s really cool that as siblings you guys are able to have these intelligent discussions, and at no point is Ben talked down to or anything-I would have no idea he was younger if you guys didn’t say it based on your dynamic. I just think about how good it feels when I can have that kind of discussion with my older sister, but she’s not into any of the stuff I am so we can never talk about these things so in depth. I also have a little sister and honestly I have a new goal to make her feel acknowledged and equal in the way Ben clearly feels whenever you two are together in videos.
    In case you guys were wondering btw, I saw an interview with Tom Holland where he said the movie was actually a gift from the director to his brother (I think it was his older brother), which is what really hit me hard. Just imagining his reaction when he first saw it...
    He also said in an interview that the only words on the tape recording of his dad that you could make out were ‘hi’ and ‘bye’, which is just a fun fact because I can.

    I understand that the father couldn't be fully fleshed out as a character so it made the most sense to have the scene where we only see him from afar but I felt that Ian got so cheated out of seeing his dad. There was such massive build up through out the whole movie just for Ian to be stuck in that debris. I adore the fact that Barley acts as the father Ian never had (I feel like that sometimes for my younger sister) but I still think they could have given Ian SOMETHING. I would have even been happy to see Ian hanging out with his dads old college buddy at the end of the movie because at least his efforts weren't completely fruitless. The message of sacrifice was a little to strong in this one for my taste, and even though people are saying that if they had him meeting his father it would be unsatisfying, I feel like that was the ending we not only needed but the resolution that Ian deserved. Don't get me wrong I adore Barley and don't think that he shouldn't have gotten to see his father but that doesn't mean Ian shouldn't have too. With Ian as the main protagonist, not having that specific conclusion was just unsatisfying. At least he was able to be more confident and developed his character. Aside from that I still think this was ana awesome movie, 8 outta 10!

    I picked up on a Barley having a “father figure” status towards Ian from the beginning. Im a 15 year old girl who is very protective over my 8 and 4 year old niece and nephew, who have grown up without a father and in a bad place with their mother. They live here now and I’m always watching over them and trying my best to be the stable parent they need. I related to barley because of this. As my own mother doesn’t have much of an emotional connection to me (she’s still a great mum tho) my older brother has really been there for me since my teen years. In that way I relate to Ian. I love that the movie shows the importance of the family members who are there and care for you, not just the ones by blood. I’m glad my niece and nephew can watch this and hopefully understand it more as they grow, knowing the true meaning

    I loved this movie so much. I cried a few times throughout because Ian and Barley's dynamic reminds me so much of my older brother and I. Even before we saw the movie, my friends kept pointing out how much like Ian I am. My older brother is a stocky guy who loves nerdy fantasy stuff , drives a beat up old van, and is always extremely supportive of me. I used to be embarrassed of being around him until I hit my teens years and realized just how great he is. Like how Barley was for Ian, my brother was like a father figure to me. Our dad isn't dead or anything, but he is emotionally distant and I was never really close with him. This movie will always hold a special place in my heart and I hope that I can convince my brother to check it out

    saw this movie at 5:30 on a monday night with a couple of friends. there were 10 people in the theater and no one within five rows of us. we were laughing out of our seats at some points and sobbing at others. we talked (quietly) about predictions or how much we loved a scene because no one was close enough to mind our talk. I highly recommend the experience. it brought the movie to a whole nother level for me. also the animation on it was incredible. I mean it's pixar so obviously it was great but the incredibly detailed and realistic backgrounds meshed perfectly with the more stylized characters and they did the wet hair so well also when the cop mentioned her girlfriend my friends and I just looked at each other and went "YES PIXAR!" it was kinda great also the maggie simpson short was iconic

    What I love about the Gelatinous Cube is that it's almost word for word a monster from D&D, the description is pretty much the same, the only difference is the D&D drowns people instead of disintegration them. As a D&D nerd I was so happy to see a direct reference to D&D, even among a movie that's so clearly inspired by D&D / table top RPGs in general

    Ian is my favorite Pixar character mainly because I haven’t connected to a character so well till I saw Ian.
    Edit: while no I’m not in the same situation as he is with his family but I still can put myself in his shoes cus my parents divorced when I was one & when my brother recently came into the picture so I know what it’s like to grow up without a father figure just the fact that he’s terrified of growing up is something I’m going through

      I also see a lot of myself in Ian despite being 8 years older than him. When I was 16, I was afraid of driving and I was often the shy and introverted yet sweet kid in school much like he was (and still kinda that as an adult). I also lost my grandfather to an illness when I was 6 so I related to Ian and Barley’s situation of having vague memories of their dad much like I do having vague memories of my grandfather and wishing that I got to know him more and spend more time with him before he passed away.

(Creative meaning without technology the way things used to be.)

    My favorite components:
    1. The mom has healthily moved on and while the boys aren't too fond of Colt, he isn't jealous and just wants their happiness.
    2. Barley's unconditional pride and love for Ian
    3. Barley holding back tears as Ian walked across without the rope
    4. Barley teaching Ian that he is strong enough
    5. Guinevere
    6. The entire ending. All of it. From coming out of the manhole to the end.
    7. Barley's love and value of history and how it pays off.
    8. Tom and Chris
    9. Cake
    10. AlOfT ELeVAr

    Fitting this into the Pixar Theory, I believe this world is an alternate universe from the other Pixar films, but is the source of magic for the world of those other films. For example, Brave's witch draws her magic from Onward's magic rich environment; The Incredibles's supers somehow can syphon it into their dna. And so on.

    After watching it seemingly a million times, I think that it’s important that they started with a Phoenix gem so that Ian KNEW without a doubt that the magic would work, and encourage him on the quest! He already doubts everything Barely tells him magic wise even having half of his deceased father with him, so imagine if he wasn’t convinced the spell would work at all! He may have never gone on a quest for a gem without evidence that the spell would work.

    I was really wanting to see the scene and the boys meet their father again. I wanted that sense of closure and was screaming at the scene when Tom's character got caught in the rubble. But after his father faded away, I loved the ending. It showed how the memories of his dad were heard from everyone else and that major source was his brother. It was a beautiful moment of family filling in the gaps. This fantasy of his dad still lives on and wasn't ruined because he heard it from his brother still.
    And that ending was amazing.

    about the location of the pheonix gem: i agree, with the "full circle" idea, but i think even storywise it still can add up. because that gem, and the fountain, as we learn in the beginning, are very very very old! so they were there probably long before the school and major parts of the city as well. so technichally the "intended" quest, from when magic still was a major thing, would´ve started at the tavern. then you´d follow the ravens, get the clovershaped stone (which you need), the river, and then get to the fountain.. so while i think, yes, it´s majorly about the figurative idea, their quest supposedly is hundreds of years old, so it does still work quite well..

    I saw myself in Ian's life a little.
    My father is a very loved person in our town.
    He has a lot of friends and everybody esmitates him. Same with my brother.
    But I am a little shy person if we look them... like I am lonley in the high school but nobody bullies me. I love/like my classmates but they don't think of me like a close friend only as a classmate. Or I just haven't got any selfconfidence. I tried to ask them sometimes for programms like Ian but they said kindly no but they never invited me back.... And i am angry to myself for being this selfcritic.

    This movie is easily up there with me for my favorite right under ratatouille ( that will always be my favorite Pixar movie due to it inspiring me for my career path of being a chef )
    I can’t find much to fault with onward if anything I had to pick would be us or Ian not getting to see his dad after all the work towards that end goal. But I understand the movie is more about the journey and Ian learning he had all the dad roles filled in with his brother. But at least let us see his brother talk too his dad ... I mean he did deserve it more so why couldn’t we experience that moment with him?
    Another thing I liked was even when you thought the whole “ you think I’m a failure “ bit was over and not addressed enough they tag a bit more into it just so you feel like it had a real resolution.
    All in all an amazing movie! Although I wish Ian used his dads jacket for more of the movie it seemed like a relevant plot device at first.

    The whole journey was still necessary. They wouldn’t have had the puzzle piece they needed to open up the stone hiding place Of the Phoenix stone. Also, the manticore had *a* map. She didn’t make the map. So, a mapmaker doesn’t necessarily know where you started from

    I loved Onward!
    I really empathized with the boys wanting to see their father again, I have a few members of my family that I would have given anything to see just one more time, so that really resonated with me.
    The realism of a young Barley being too afraid of the tubes and machines attached to his dad to go in the room to see him, and as a result never having that closure, and never being able to forget about it- while simultaneously keeping that memory from Ian because all he would want were the positive ones, was really emotional for me, as well.
    I think the cyclic nature of the story was great, too. The boys leave home, seeking adventure, learning and growing as people and giving Ian the chance to realize that really, Barley has been there for him the whole time, only to realize that the answer to their quest is home- and family, and togetherness. For Ian, it makes a lot of narrative sense, he comes to realize that he doesn’t need his dad because he’s had the rest of his family there the whole time. For barley, I think it comes back to the ancient artifacts he’s tried to protect- and the importance of the past. It’s a validation that everything he’s done hasn’t been for nothing
