Based upon your strong recommendation, I just ordered the Kindle edition of That Which Stands Outside. I found your comment about how the author expands the cast of characters gradually interesting. I just finished reading James McBride's The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store last week. Whilst reading the novel, I found it amazing how McBride so skillfully managed the addition of new characters within the story line - and how long the character list became - and yet how I never felt overwhelmed or confused by so many characters as they were added in such a relaxed, organic way. Anyway, thanks for the review. Looking forward to reading this one.

Funny. I’d never heard of this writer until I recently picked up an old copy of a book called stitch which he wrote back in the very early 90s. I thought it was really awesome with the kind of dark and dreary world building I never seem to find in new horror and got my hands on his first novel called Toady which is on my TBR pile. I’ll have to get a hold of this one. It will be interesting to see how his writing has shaped over the last 35 years haha
