Did online rebellion help doom Disney empire’s Star Wars hotel?

  • Disney’s Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser was one of the company’s most ambitious and immersive experiences. Part hotel, part live-action roleplay, it promised guests a chance to step into a galaxy far, far away.
But less than two years after opening, the luxury experience has permanently closed its doors in Orlando, Florida.
According to The Wrap, the former hotel will be transformed into a Walt Disney Imagineering office. The division is responsible for designing Disney’s creative projects, from theme parks to cruise ships.

Anyone who has worked in a hotel, I am one, KNEW that it was going to fail. LARP doesn't work, it dosen't even work at summer camp when you can get a few enthusiastic kids on stage to make a play for your parents just before they pick you up to come home. And they wanted to do this with every visitor every, single, day? Not. Happening.
Physically and mentally, the environment was toxic for anyone who just spent the day in their car listening to their kids bouncing off the walls or running around a theme park in the sun. A hotel is supposed to be a safe space, safe from noise, safe from lights, safe from distractions. It's where your bed is at.
Having alarms go off while your on the toilet so you can assemble into some freaky stage performance is not going to be the highlight of your day.
Edit: Also, the hotel cost 2 billion to build. Not millions, billions with a B. With cost overruns and actors they didn't even make a fraction of a profit.

    • @gluecksdrache2054
      @gluecksdrache2054 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

At least they made dreams come true and the actors took experience with them for life.
And may be it was just the opposite of the trend to de-theme hotels and make them more average.
Just look at the Luxor Las Vegas (of another company) which got rid of many of the design elements and is now more like a normal hotel than a fascinating pyramid.

What was wrong with this? Let me count the ways:
    1. Absurdly expensive.
    2. Based on a franchise that has been destroyed by Disney with new characters that appeal to a fairly small sector of fans.
    3. Filled with the more recent unpopular characters rather than original popular characters.
Not only is Disney completely out of touch with the reality of people's lives, they no longer make original content that attracts a broad audience.

It's ironic that they're turning a failed "imagineering" effort into imagineering offices. I can only imagine coming to work every day knowing you're working in a building that failed so hard and your job is to make experiences that don't fail. They should've come up with a way to make this an experience for fans who are already at the park because the park is already too expensive for the joy you get out of it.

The failure of the hotel wasn't Jenny Nicholson's fault. Disney enthusiasts and followers of Disney news knew from early on that the hotel was disappointing.
Everyone universally praised the cast members who worked in the attraction, and from all accounts, they all worked extremely hard to provide a good experience for the guests.
But despite the massive amounts of money that Disney claimed to have invested in the hotel, and the outrageous costs to stay there for two nights, most non-access media reports complained about too many cost cutting measures that hurt the experience.
Visitors also didn't like the time period the experience was set in. The hotel was set in the Disney Star Wars era, rather than in the era of the original movies, which had the largest fan base, or in the prequel era, which had a large following of millennial fans. So for a lot of potential patrons, the hotel wasn't the "right" Star Wars for them.
Jenny Nicholson's exhaustively detailed report was released after the hotel had already started cutting back on "departure" dates. The extremely high cost, an experience that did not live up to most patrons expectations, Disney going cheap on too many significant elements, coupled with low repeatability (little incentive to revisit the experience after doing it once), doomed the hotel to failure.
Many Disney pundits reported disaffection with the experience before Jenny Nicholson. She just put the final nail in the coffin.
P.S. If you have never seen a video from Jenny Nicholson, go visit her channel! Her particular brand of deep dive reporting is surprisingly fun to watch and informative.
