Good to know about 75A. I have a Diamond SD330. Good point about Auto tuning controller. I was recently thinking of getting a Tunematic Auto but decided that it costs too much so went with Tunematic Lite as well. I figured, if the positions are memorized, I can just fine tune from there. I too agree that on a Diamond K400C mount, any Tarheel except for the Baby Tarheel would put too much torsional load on the mount during highway driving.
EDIT: I had just started tuning my Diamond SD330 and also bought a Little Tarheel PRO which is now made in North Carolina. I have not use either one of them on the road, but have been putting into memory on my TuneMatic Lite the bands for the SD330. I was surprised to see less than 1.5 SWR for 10 and 20m. I've got around 1.19 on 40m, but 80m I could not get below 7 which likely need a tuner if I want to transmit on 80m. But overall, these screwdriver antennas are pretty awesome.

I liked the video. I’m glad you reviewed the 75A in particular because I’ve been wanting one of those for a while.

I sold that antenna, felt it was too big to travel with. I got the Little Tarheel and I'm loving it. I usually do 20 meters most of the time, for 40 meters is much harder to get. 10 meter is also, ideal for the Little Tarheel. But, the 75A was well constructed and if you have the ability to mount it, I think you will find it very nice. Hams are always telling me how nice and clear I am doing mobile with the Tarheel.

i got a Scorpion 680A last March, its massive. It is still sitting on my garage. I just can't bring myself to mount that huge thing to my trailer hitch. I had been running the ATAS which worked fin e once I got everything grounded well. It's a liitle flimsy compared to the other scewdrivers IMHO but it is light enough to run on the K400 mount which is what I used. I got a 75A a few weeks ago to try out. I ordered a heavy-duty mount from Breedlove antenna mounts in NC. I plan on installing it on the rear upper side panel of my Toyota Sequoia when I have time.

I tried the ATAS and it didn't work for me. They say grounding is important, but I wasn't able to figure it out. I use a Diamond K400 mount for my other antennas and they work perfectly. As for my 75A, I like it, but I just mount it when I do a POTA activation. I'm thinking of getting a Little Tarheel 2, seems like that might be best for size and performance. I'm sure you will like the 75A, I know I do and many people compliment me for the audio quality on my 12 year old FT857D radio.

I had a ATAS-120A many years ago. They make quite a bit of wind noise on the highway. Also, if used with K400C mount, it will start rotating it after a trip or even during a trip; I had to constantly adjust it. Eventually, it will move more easily which was really annoying. Now about grounding. It needs to have very good grounding, otherwise, it will just go up and and never find that dip. I now have both Diamond SD330 and Little Tarheel PRO. I love them both. Diamond is little heavier and bigger. But they are very similar IMO. If you can spend the extra dollar, go with Tarheel.

Do you run two antennas for your 857d?

During contests like Field Day, yes.

Not a bad idea to remove the antanna. You can get a breedlove mount that is quick release of your tarheel.

That’s funny that you said that. I was doing a POTA activation today and I asked the mobile operator with Antenna he was using and he told me he was using a little Tarheel 2 HP. And the funny thing is mentioned that mount. I definitely will try to look for it. I do like my diamond mount.

@@frankwc0o I used the Dimond mount with the breedlove quick release on my previous car. I now use it on my wrangler but not the diamond mout.

@@frankwc0o He must have been talking about a Little Tarheel II HP. That's a fantastic antenna for 40-6 meters, rated at 125 W CW and (I think) 250 W SSB. There's a new model from Tarheel Designs called the Little Pro HP that is rated at 200 W continuous (FM, RTTY) and 800 W on the other modes, otherwise the same size as the Little Tarheel II. I have one of each--again, fantastic. You can run either one of them on the K400 mount, but you can also by a triple magnet mount with 5-inch magnets and a 3/8-24 stud base from Gigaparts for $40 that is a much better solution in my opinion. Have fun.

@@radiok2ua Hello. There is a 75A from Tarheel. www.tarheelantennas.com/model_75a. You are right about the magmount, I was using that, but I feel having a mount on the hatchback, gave me better results and I didn't have to bring down the magnet all the time, for the wire was never pinched by the door. I do have a little Tarheel II,

@@frankwc0o Yes, I'm familiar with the 75A. I also have a 40A-HP, which is a 1500-W 40-10 meter model. It needs a more substantial mount, obviously. I have used the Little Tarheel HP on the K400 on the tailgate of my Pilot for a couple of seasons full-time and it is fine, but I don't like the ground contact and the risk of damaging the paint and deforming the panel is too great if I hit a low branch. Last year I had to replace the tailgate because of rust that had started behind the license plate so I didn't put it back on in that spot and found the Gigaparts triple magnet (much better than other brands out there--has a large plate mounted right on top of the magnets, no extra space). Works well. Would also work in your stationary scenario with a much larger antenna--any of the Tarheels including the new Tarheel Designs 1000 HP Pro. I have one of these mounted on the receiver mount on the Pilot, replacing the 200A-HP that I used previously for 80-10 meters.
