    Happy Birthday Joel! 🎉
    Mary I’s dress sounds beautiful and sumptuous. What a sight! I would have loved to hear what Elizabeth was wearing too.
    The celebrations for Mary I must have been a sight to behold and hear!!
    They definitely sound like they had rose tinted glasses on when describing Henry VIII’s reign!
    I do feel sorry for Queen Jane and her end.
    I wonder how long the people were happy with Queen Mary I replacing Queen Jane with all the religious issues that took place under Mary’s reign.
    Thank you again for another wonderful video and I can’t wait for the livestream tomorrow

    Happy Birthday Joel! What a triumph for Mary and Elizabeth, after enduring the insult their father perpetrated against them, to ride through London with the people cheering!

    Ah to be able to witness to that triumph for Mary after everything she got what was hers by birthright. Though I do love Anne, I have always felt that Mary had the right to be ahead of Elizabeth in the line of succession and that Anne's marriage to Henry had split up a legally binding marriage. Guess it's a good thing this isn't 16th century England or I wouldn't have a head for saying that. 🙆

    I absolutely love hearing about the processions thru the streets of London and how the people rejoiced at these occasions and actually got to be a part of the action and actually could enjoy the day along with the monarch. I just love that. I could only imagine how wonderful it must have been to see Mary coming your way in all her glory. I can only imagine how beautiful she must have looked, and honestly she deserved her time in the limelight because she had so many times been pushed away from it. Mary must have been so overwhelmed with happiness and joy that her people rejoiced for her becoming queen. One of the moments when it would have been nice to be a fly on the wall. Sigh... I'm just so happy that we have Claire to tell us about these amazing events in such detail. Honestly this is the most in depth and best channel for Tudor history. Love my daily does of Tudor! Thank you so much Claire!!

    Thanks so much Claire, appreciate it. Detailed accounts of events such as this are incredibly fascinating and such a treasure to still have.
    Wow Mary's gown sounds exquisite, she obviously looked the part, every inch a Queen like her beloved late mother.
    Mary was clearly loved and welcomed as the true rightful heir. People who were still secretly loyal to the Catholic faith and those loyal to the memory of her mother must have rejoiced at Mary's accession.
    This detailed account of events is bittersweet for me to hear because this day was a happy one for Mary, she had finally triumphed in the face of adversity. She had righted all the wrong done to her. So promising were these early days! It's just sad when you think of how Mary's reign turned out in the end. On this day she was loved and cheered but throughout history she has since being unfairly vilified

    I seem to recall hearing from you that Mary's wedding gown also was purple velvet? I wonder whether she recycled such a special dress?! I do wish the chronicler had described Mary's reaction to all of this, and also that of Elizabeth. Was Elizabeth enjoying her sister's wonderful day and sharing the spotlight whenever possible, or trying to stay in the background?

    An amazing costume. Hope the weather was good for Mary wearing all the velvet, satin and gems. It was probably heavy as well. And all the people waiting and watching, standing at attention, singing. I'm uncomfortable just listening! How quickly the people forgot Henry. Hope springs eternal...

    • @pbohearn
      @pbohearn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes quite the event! Mary seems to have have gotten the accession pageantry down.
      It seems like she planned public events for maximum effect to show great support for her monarchy.And the clothes! I remember another event where you described her dressed to the nines it seems like she certainly had a luxurious taste. Do you think she got that from her mother or her father? Her portraits don’t suggest a beautiful woman. I don’t hear anybody really describing her other than her clothes. What’s your sense of that? Also what do you make of her asking or telling Elizabeth to join her on this procession. it seems like a really good political move on her part. I wonder how Elizabeth felt about it and whether she wanted to go or really didn’t feel like she had a choice or maybe that she felt like she needed to show support. It was interesting that they described Mary‘s dress in detail but not anything mentioned about Elizabeth. And I don’t think they were very close they didn’t spend that much time together over the last several years prior to Mary becoming queen. I can kind of see them on this procession and smiling and pretending like they’re talking to each other and they really barely can stand each other LOL

    • @Shane-Flanagan
      @Shane-Flanagan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pbohearn It was all about pageantry with the monarchy so Mary was no different. I think she inherited her luxurious taste from both parents. Henry always splashed the cash and aimed to impress and outdo others while Catherine of Aragon was known for expensive tastes. As she aged and her looks faded she tended to make up for that with lavish gowns and over do it with jewels.
      Mary and Elizabeth had a good relationship as children, Mary had to care for an infant Elizabeth for a few years at Hatfield so I'm sure they had some sort of bond. By the time Mary's accession they hadn't seen much of each other and their relationship must have been strained. I'd say yes they were all smiles for the people but I don't think they hated each other. Family meant something to Mary

    • @Shane-Flanagan
      @Shane-Flanagan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why were you uncomfortable listening? I doubt people forgot Henry, how could they? People knew better to keep their mouths shut and endure.
      Also it was Summertime, August is usually a good month so chances are the weather was good. The weather always seemed good in the old days. Yes such a decorative gown must have been been hot, heavy and uncomfortable but that's the price you pay when wanting to look good

    Happy Birthday, Joe! Today (3 Aug) is my wife's birthday too. It's Aug 2 in the US as I watch.
    Perhaps the people giving the effusive praise were ancestors of people who are now part of the Monster Raving Loony Party. Mary seems so serious she might not recognize snark and sarcasm.

    It’s lucky for us that Wriothesley describes clothes in such beautiful detail. I’ve noticed his descriptions of clothes in some other videos as well. I know it’s a stereotype, but often you don’t see male chroniclers considering things like clothes important enough to record, but it’s fascinating for us in the future.

      7 hours after your post, it's 12:18am on 3 August in New Mexico, USA. I enjoy hearing the time differential between different points on the globe, as I have since the first time I spoke to my old pen pal from New Zealand on the phone (she is 18 hours ahead of me, and it's fun thinking about her present being a day and a half into my future) You are not quite as far ahead, though it's a pleasant reminder of how extensive the world is.

    Do you think Wyatt's rebellion was intended to make Lady Jane Grey queen again or to make Elizabeth queen? Relation between Lady Jane Grey, Lady Katherine Grey, Lady Mary Grey , Mary I, Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots is very interesting.

    • @Shane-Flanagan
      @Shane-Flanagan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wyatt's Rebellion was done with the hope of putting Elizabeth on the throne. One of those involved in the rebellion was Jane's father so he had obviously given up on his daughter and his participation in the rebellion sealed her fate

    I’m curious about Mary’s phantom pregnancies. Being that the child would have been heir to the throne and monarchs were scrutinized about their physical condition, what did the doctors and those who attended to Mary think about her pregnancies. Did they too think she was pregnant? Was she showing as a six month pregnant woman would? What is in the primary sources about these odd medical conditions? Thanks so much.
