  • I could have been a sailor, could have been
    a cook
A real live lover, could have been a book
I could have been a signpost, could have been
    a clock
As simple as a kettle, steady as a rock
    I could be
    Here and now
I would be. I should be
    But how?
    I could have been
    One of these things first
    I could have been
    One of these things first.
I could have been your pillar, could have been
    your door
I could have stayed beside you, could have stayed
    for more
I could have been your statue
    Could have been your friend
A whole long lilfetime could have been the end
I could be yours so true
I would be. I should be through and through.
    I could have been
    One of these things first
    I could have been
    One of these things first.
I could have beena whistle, could have been
    a flute
A real live giver, could have been a boot
I could have been a signpost, could have been
    a clock
As simple as a kettle steady as a rock
    I could even be here
I would be. I should be so near
    I could have been
    One of these things first
    I could have been
    One of these things first.

The first time I heard this song I pulled the car over and sat listening to the radio, blown away, that was 45 years ago and I am still in love with this song and this man's voice. RIP Nick

Nick Drake's music reminds me of Autumn. When on those rare days you see an orange Harvest moon and the air turns crisp and you pack away your summer clothes remembering the days when you walked on the beach staring out to the sea. But now the fires of a cold night have returned and you comfort yourself with your favorite blankets that are hiding on the shelves. Sipping a glass of wine and totally confident that all your dreams will come true.

I searched for this song all day because it was stuck in my head and finally stumbled upon it not knowing his name or the name of the song just remembering hearing it from some random movie... And all that kept playing in my head was a montage scene with the tune of this song with the sun shining through someone’s life passing by. Felt like it was brought to me by God.

Heard this watching Seven Pounds(movie) and had to find out all about it. It haunts me for my regrets of what I should have been and who. What a shame so many of our best singers and songwriters and poets and artists are lost to depression and such terrible sadness that either intentionally or by accident take their own lives. I feel cheated that I never knew of him or his music for 47 years after his death. As I wipe away the tears I hope he found peace.

@@notdoneyet7785 I know. I ask myself the same question. It has truth in it (the quote) but it doesn't matter why in the end of the day. But some days are beautiful, you know. We're ungrateful. It's good that God created us the way we are. We just need to find the way, and, since I'm Christian I am able to look at it from different perspective. If it wasn't for Zach Braff, I could have been that signpost that never heard Nick Drake's simplistic yet complicated sounds.
I could have been aloof, I could've turned the channel,
I could have been indifferent, I could've rolled over and napped.
It could have been "the one song to change your life."
It could have been as I "looked forward to a good cry, Feels pretty good"

I could have been a sailor, could have been a cook
A real live lover, could have been a book.
I could have been a signpost, could have been a clock
As simple as a kettle, steady as a rock.
    I could be
    Here and now
I would be, I should be
    But how?
    I could have been
    One of these things first
    I could have been
    One of these things first.
I could have been your pillar, could have been your door
I could have stayed beside you, could have stayed for more.
Could have been your statue, could have been your friend,
A whole long lifetime could have been the end.
I could be yours so true
I would be, I should be through and through
    I could have been
    One of these things first
    I could have been
    One of these things first.
I could have been a whistle, could have been a flute
A real live giver, could have been a boot.
I could have been a signpost, could have been a clock
As simple as a kettle, steady as a rock.
    I could be even here
I would be, I should be so near
    I could have been
    One of these things first
    I could have been
    One of these things first.

Thanks for sharing the lyrics. Great song that I discovered in the film Seven Pounds with Will Smith. I'll use this song with my students. A great source of studying and relaxing.l😜

I've always wondered why this song made me feel a deep melancholy, and only after I had gotten much older did I realize that pining for life choices not taken implies regret for those taken instead. How old was he when he wrote this?

I originally heard this in the movie 'Crush' and did crazy things to find out who it was. Didn't know he was gone. Leading the singers in rock and roll heaven I hope.

+Jean Hopkins I've been to visit his grave in Tanworth in Arden, just North of Stratford upon Avon a number of times. Its quite an experience.....Many troubled soul's have left messages there, thanking him for the music that brought them back into the light. I think that he would have liked that.

+paul ward I visited his grave too in Tanworth which is a tiny quintessential English village. An emotional experience. While I was sitting there, whatever angle the sun was at, suddenly a narrow beam shone directly on and lit up the words on his tombstone: "now we rise and we are everywhere".

+plica06 Absolutely! It is such a beautiful quiet place to sit on a warm Summer's day. A few of us are taking a Motorcycle ride out there soon and will be paying our respects to him and also the Legendary Motorcycle Champion Mike Hailwood who is also buried there.

What a nice uplifting song! Heard it first time now and also like all the photos I've never seen of Nick. This time the other studio musicians, for me, didn't sound to interfering and loud. It all blended together better for me with this song, yet only my amateur POV. Thanks 5cinqSaisons for creating this video! Someone told me my guitar and singing reminded him of "Nick Drake" and never heard of him. He's way over my head with talent! What great gifts he has given! I might have someone record me with their cell phone at an open mic if I can, my song, "Johanna" if others might look me up. Problem is in the over-all, no way to draw people to listen to it once I get it made.
