Adhesion railway means that the locomotive is moving only by means of friction between the wheels and the tracks, no cogwheels or cables attached, which is often a feature with railways in mountainous areas.
Thank you for not only the delightful train ride to Scotlands highest village, but also for the hidden gem of the Polish relief map of Poland. My grandparents and parents arrived in Britain after the war thanks to both the Polish and British army. 🙂
A cracking little video and the relief map of Scotland was sonething i had never heard of. A lovely gesture from the Polish people who suffered so much during WW2 . All the best to you both
Yes, it's hard to believe that a village in Staffordshire, a county not known for its mountains, is the highest in the UK. Flash is just off the Leek to Buxton road. An excellent drive or cycle.
What a wonderful surprise to wake up to on a cloudy, chilly day in Canada ... a Tuesday treat from Steve and Alicja! Thank you for brightening a gloomy morning.
Video presentation, format, length, topic, and ending credit's are spot on Steve. You took us right there with you. Thank you and Alicja. Train conductor, what a gentleman, eh?
What a cute narrow gauge railway! The relief map is so cool. I usually don’t get to comment so early, but I’m up especially late. Thanks for the adventure!
Thanks Steve for going to the top of Scotland and looks windy and it is nice to Alicia with you today and here in Basingstoke hants it is windy as well thanks
Adhesion railways are those that rely on just a friction of the wheels on the rails just like you get on any mainline railway in the UK at least as opposed to things like a cog or a rack railway which you get in mountainous regions.
Another great video Steve. Just to say well done and thanks for the adventures - they’re all really entertaining and interesting. It’s also great to see you supporting and commenting on other travel You Tuber’s videos - nice touch. Cheers.
@@steve-marsh I don't mind a wee bonus video hahaha, working from home and always have TH-cam open on my private laptop which is sitting right next to my work equipment. 😬
Another cracking job Steve! As you mentioned I too first saw this in Tom Scott's video about the time when this line served the unusual purpose of being a bus replacement railway
Julia and I went to the Polish Map of Scotland about 2 weeks ago. We're thinking of holding our wedding there. You guys will get an invite! 😁 Awesome video, as always.
Great video as always guys. Remote place to live especially in the winter. I guess you would have to by a hardy soul to put up with Hoolies. Thanks again, take care.
Did this back in September while on a cold and wet weekend down in Wanlockhead and we were the only folk on the train so I'm pleased to see it looking busy here! The volunteers all do such a fantastic job, and the guy who shuts you in the carriage on the way out is an absolute gem - held up our departure for ages as he was nattering away telling us stories 😂
What a lovely little symphony in teal you two make, the colours complementing you both so well, especially the reflections off the sunglasses. A really delightful small gauge railway, which I never knew existed too, and that fantastic 3D map of Scotland, to honour the people who helped the Polish. Another gem.
Thanks for another great TH-cam video. I have driven though Wanlockhead a good few years ago on a very short holiday in Dumfries & Galloway. This is an area I really must give proper time to have a proper explore. It’s such an overlooked area of Scotland.
Have you been to Snaefell Mountain Railway? Views to England Scotland Ireland and Wales on a clear day. Teashop / cafe at both ends. And more vintage engineering and seaside at the Laxey village end. Do take a warm coat up the mountain though. But you know that....
@@steve-marsh ps engineering includes 2 more vintage railways in Laxey, an old mine and a massive water wheel. Boat / plane Fares are a bit dear especially round TT and grand prix week. Try Sail and Rail if not bringing van. Public transport is good here But lots of places more accessible with a vehicle of course.. Oh Laxey campsite is really nice Small affordable decent. And a tram stop v close. Biggest downside is that Laxey is very hilly so not great for creaky people / disabled access.
01:57: If the train driver can resist that face, I'm a ring-tailed Lemur. What a fantastic tip for our next visit with the lovely folks of The Borders.
As others have said, an adhesion railway is where the engine and carriage wheels run on the tracks as a normal railway does. Snowdon Mountain Railways is a rack & pinion. Nice to have a bonus video in the week.
Such a cool wee train, you wouldn't want to be going far on those wooden seats though😂Awesome map of Scotland👍You would think by now Alicja would know there are no flat parts in Scotland😉Cool video Steve👍
Very interesting! Wanlockhead, which is south of Glasgow, is higher than the highlands which I thought would be the....highest. Keep the excellent content coming!
Hello Steve …. Another place I’ve visited…. again, back in the day…😊 But I’m visiting Scotland at least once a year from now on making some new memories. Great video guys, regards to you both 😉😘
Now that's two places I've been meaning to visit for years! Thanks for sharing them - I'll have a better idea of what I'm looking for now, when I get lost in Eddleston! I think adhesion railways are ordinary ones - that is to say, the wheels of the vehicles simply run along rails and they're not fixed to them in any way, such as is the case with the Snowdon Mountain Railway.
Aww man, taking me back to my school days! My high school used to use the outdoor centre at Wanlochead (or Wanlocheid as we used to call it lol) Great wee mid-week surprise! thanks so much xxx
Great little surprise video Steve, it looked very remote and very chilly, but it is Scotland, I hope Noddy and Big Ears didn’t mind you borrowing their cute train, yet again only you could find the highest village in Scotland, what next I wonder! Interesting story relating to the Polish map of Scotland, we learn something new every time we are out and about with the two of you thank you 🙏 again 🤗
what a wonderful, atmospheric and "random" video! an unexpected treat for a Tuesday full of Zoom calls! charming train and village (from a distance). enjoyed the map of Scotland and the sentiment behind it. Plus a definition: an adhesion railway relies on adhesion traction to move the train. Adhesion traction is the friction between the drive wheels and the steel rail. More random videos, please! Cheers!
As soon as you put the caption on screen about Tom Scott doing a video on the railway, I knew exactly which railway it was and for what reason it existed.
Thanks for the video. Brought back childhood memories going to Leadhills for picnics with my relatives from Sanquhar where the oldest post office in uk is located
I’m so excited that I’ll be back visiting Scotland on Monday. Actually staying near Montrose for one night as we work our way north. The notes at the end of the videos have been helpful. Thanks!
Well, inspired by this video my wife and I visited the railway on Sunday morning. Nice return trip, then lunch at the Wanlockhead Inn. Then on the way home we stopped for a look at the Polish Map. Quite a feat, and what a deep ravine you have to cross over to get to it from the hotel!
Wanlockhead actually has it's own rock festival in the summer! 3 days of music, folks camped in the old bowling green with campervans behind that. It is all original bands as well. They put up a large tent at the side of the pub and the bands play (mostly) in there. It can be fun when it lashes down with rain. Being sideways on from the hill at the back of it, the water coming of the hill can sometimes run through the tent like a small river whilst you are in watching the bands. One year some of the kids who were with their parents (it is a family friendly event) started building a dam with small stones inside the tent😂. It is bloody hilly and blowy all the time from my experiences.
Hunslet is a busy suburb of Leeds, originally famous for building steam- and then diesel locomotives, so "Hunslet" was the manufacturer's label, not the name of the loco/train.
What a cute train. Great to see you both mid week. My cousin from Edinburgh is still here and she enjoyed watching too. She’s been there but not on the train 🚂 Nice video
What a cute little choo choo train...that Polish map of Scotland was a kind gesture indeed. I was waiting for the southern part of Scotland to be presented so thank you. Have a lovely day Alicja and Steve 😎😎time for my Tim's ☕

Now that all makes sense! Thank you!

A mid week video? Such a treat! 😊

It's a great wee railway! I've visited a few times over the years. They are planning to extend it to closer to Wanlockhead.
Oh great to hear!
Ah, so very nice. Thank you, Steve ! Locking forward to the next one.

Thanks for the info William!
Thanks William for saving me from having to write that.
I had no doubt someone had beaten me to it, hence my perusal through the comments.
I had no idea there were so many different types of railways. Thank you.
Fascinating ❤
Going through the Ledhills towards the old mine museum is amazing as well, the hills just appear to grow straight out of the ground at the roadside.
Really want to get back here!
