How does this relate to undervolting? I used your guide to undervolt my new M15 R3 with great results. About a 15% drop in CPU temp. Is it a matter of either undervolting or overclocking? Or can you do both? Great videos! Edit: also, curious about the details of what to do when the system crashes. Do you have a video that includes that process?
If you overclock in MSI afterburner it is essentially undervolting or giving you more performance per watt as you are still limited to 140w but it increases the voltage curve (hope this makes sense?) Ah yes, I should have put note about that, but it depends on the crash, sometimes you just get an error so you just adjust voltage and carry on, if you ever get a hard crash just hold the power button to restart your PC
You can actually Undervolt the Gpu via Afterburner. That is the real purpose if one knows what one is doing. Sadly this video didn't cover it.. In short one is able to set a Voltage Curve for clock speeds. Ultimately you can have higher clock speeds ("overclock") while ALSO having a lower voltage curve, which means lower temps, and better performance (since the lower the voltage, the more likely it is to squeak into the lower TDP range that mobile gpu are gimped to).
You can force a certain clock across a voltage range more efficiently by manually editing the curve, this also affords more stability because you're not increasing the clock at the lower ends of the voltage range. If your laptop generally runs at 1800mhz at 1.0v you can bump up the lower points on the voltage curve to match that 1800mhz number, which will effectively force the laptop to run that clock at say .95 or .90v In my testing this is more effective and more stable than just a positive offset, because your boost/game clock may not be unstable, but that +100mhz on your base clock may be unstable.

hey first time doing this on an alienware laptop theres 2 gpus the radeon and the rtx 3070 in after burner it says gpu 1temp and gpu 2 temp how can i distinguish between the two for when i name them?
Don’t really get that in command centre I can overclock Gupta 300 on core 281 mhz 300 on memory 281mhz but can’t tough the power limit ! Why is that I see you never touched yours on Msi ……m17r4 can I improve this with msi getting confused as mine can crash on the Alienware command centre.
Are you using the undervolting from throttle stop in sequence with msi afterburner? If you run both will the settings shown in both videos be the same together? Or is there different settings I should run?
Appreciate the video, thanks for the thoughtful walkthroughs! Just got the M15 R4 (16 GB RAM, RTX 3070, 512 GB SSD, 300 Hz display) and I have followed the Throttle Stop undervolting video and all is well when adjust and test the voltage offset on my system :) But, I am having a problem with overclocking using MSI Afterburner. Every time I try to adjust the core and memory clocks then try to run something (Snowrunner, Superposition benchmark, Control, SW Battlefront II...whatever) the screen goes black and have to reboot. Made sure the GPU BIOS is fairly recent by downloading the firmware update utility (Feb 2021). I've tried your specific OC values and more conservative ones (50 core, 50 memory) but always the same result (black screen --> reboot). Any feedback/suggestion(s) greatly appreciated!
I hate to say it but you might have just got unlucky with the gfx card, some clock better than others. Try just overclocking the core and not the vram, the. If that crashes try the vram but not the core.have you tried to rolling back to the stock dell video drivers? Or the latest nvidia drivers if still on Dell drivers?
@@MashITTech ok, thanks for the reply. Overclocking the vram alone seemed to do fine but overclocking the core alone still crashed, oh well. Used latest nvidia drivers (466.27) but haven't rolled back to stock drivers, might try that later on. Thanks again!
Hi i'm new to overclocking so pardon my question. How do you balance stability and speed with temperature? It may still be stable but running hotter than i might like. Is there another setting to work with to balance the temp?
Your videos are great. Just after watching this one, I bought a new Alienware m17 r4 :) But why don't you speak about undervolting with MSI Afterburner curve. It is a great way to reduce temperatures, even CPU temperature as CPU and GPU shared some heat pipes
Hi Cedric, thanks mate. I did consider it but a lot of people find it quite confusing and it does take a bit of time to get the curve right. I do use it myself if I want a quieter machine but just overclocking essentially undervolts it anyway as you are getting higher clocks on the same power budget (140w in the case of the 3070)
Hello. thanks for the video. After I apply all the settings and overclock the MSI Afterburner do I have to keep opened the software of MSI Afterburner or can I closed it? Every time I launch a new game do it have to open the software? thank you
I believe it will hold until a reboot but I always keep it in the task bar as I like to have the system stats in the top left so I can always monitor my laptops temps 👍
Brilliant! I asked as it seems quite similar in features. Was wondering if it would work any more efficiently than the msi as it was in house software.
Hey i just got my m17 r4 i9 3080 was wondering what should be the first things to do have not used a gaming laptop before how can i check everything is fine like cpu gpu test and screen and other things are working fine ?
When I get a new machine I always check it over visually, look for dead pixels and then run a couple of benchmarks to ensure it performs as expected and doesn't over heat.
Not in this case as you are still limited to the Nvidia set 140w limit, you are just using a more aggressive voltage frequency (so more performance per watt)
I have those two paramters available on the M17 R3 but apply just does nothing.. the mhz of the GPU never changes.... I was actually trying to UNDER clock it to save some heat....
What would happen if you hooked up the 330w PSU that DELL offers for the M17 r4 with 3080 (or, you can buy a la carte) , on the m15 R4? does the amount of power the 3070 can use to get higher clocks, go up?
No that’s not how it works, the systems are limited via the bios. However if you use the m17 r4 with the smaller power supply it will take less power and be quieter, I actually do this sometimes when I wanna play in bed.
Will these same settings possibly work alright on M15 R3 w/ i7-10750H and RTX 2070 Super Mobile? And would I need too remove Throttlestop at all/Alienware Command Center?
Very impresive very profesional I got miners doing overclock but you explained it like a scientific with the right tools. I'll bypass overclocking but you help me understand it. CLOCK or CORE SPEED DOWN -500, MEMORY UP +1200 that's how miners do it 3:14!
It appears the MSI afterburner download is having issues, do you know how I can use the Alienware Command Center to do any overclocking or have a video link to that? My computer - M17 R4. Thanks!
That sounds odd, they should use both 2280 slots. Look at my video where I compare the m15 r4 to m17 r4. I open them both and show the m.2 slots, it should answer your question :)
Beware that some people are reporting that Even though they have overclock off in the Alienware command center it's still on. So if this is the case and you overclock it further with afterburner you can damage your Rig beware. If you turn the overclock off in the command center make sure you restart the computer before using afterburner
I wanna get this laptop so bad but I'm worried its gonna be a toaster with highend games even with fans running fast, also hesitant to get the 3080 for it, while I'd appreciate it to have the newest tech for longer I think compared to the 3070 it might overheat even more
I think you might be right, the 3080 might be pushing it thermally. I think the i7 and 3070 is probably the best config personally. Also my tweaks help with the temps a lot so spend a few minutes tweaking your machine if you get it :)
Hello know your very busy, but if you can help it would be great. My model is the i9 and 3080 16gb vram, i have used your overclocked numbers and have gained great temps on the cpu, but slight increase to the gpu performance and wonder if I’m doing anything wrong? P.s my gpu overclock does not show on the awcc.
The overclock probably won't show in AWCC but as long as you can see it in MSI afterburner you should be good. What overclock did you apply within MSI afterburner?
100 core clock should be making a difference, run time spy at stock then with the overclock applied. The gpu score should be a few hundred points higher
@@visveswaranr7587 I can't imagine it does atleast on that specific screen, right? The screen refresh rate cannot be exceeded as it is designed for 60 fps. Now if you were to plug it into a display that exceeded that 60 fps threshold then sure.

Hi there, i got my m17 R4 Alienware with 3080 16Gb, 32 Gb RAM and UHD screen and the best result i got from the Time Spy benchmark (the same shown on the end of this video) is 9619pts… and that result is achieved after undervolting done exactly like in your other video ( -110, -110and -55) and overclocking in Alienware Command Center (+125mhz and +250mhz on GPU) so how come you get over 11k points in the same test?? Can i squezze a bit more from mine?
Yes, something is wrong there, you should be getting a much higher score in time spy, especially with a 3080. I would expect to see 12k+ score. Have you monitored your temps whilst running the test? Also test it again with profile set to max fan to see if that improves the score? And lastly, you are not running in quiet mode are you?
@@MashITTech i dont think it was in quiet mode but i’m going to double check it in the evening and let you know. How do you think such undervolting and overclocking in the same time affects lifespan of CPU and GPU? Is it alright to just use it on every day basis?
@@MashITTech Alright, so now I don’t know anything more than before 🤣 I did run a test without undervolting and with overclocking off in ACC but in full speed thermal mode and… i had the best result so far - 10,6k. 1000 more than ever before, but still less than you with 3070. So I thought it might be, like you said, matter of fan speed. But afterwards i did another test with undervolting -116, -116, -58 and overclocking on in ACC +135mhz and +270mhz on GPU and it said the result is invalid because of my NVIDIA driver… so i did another few tests with different configurations (OC on, undervolting off or the other way around, all off/on) and all the results were invalid, and all of them ended around 9,5k points…. Do you have any idea what might be the issue here? How come I can’t get near even 11k dont mention 12+ with better GPU? Time Spy says world record with exactly the same configuration as mine is over 13k and i get maximally 10,5…. Im using Thermaltake Massive 20RGB Notebook cooler. So the airflow should be alright. What else i can do to get at least around 11,5k points? PS. Ofc i have the newest Nvidia driver. At least that is what GeForce Experience says.
ok, a little update. I did all tests again. And from what i see the results in regular Time Spy (just DirectX 12) are pretty random. Sometimes undervolting and overclocking gives something extra, the other times in opposit, the results are worse and all the time no matter what around 10k points. So i have no clue how it works and why. But as I mentioned before i have 4k screen with this laptop and you can find the Time Spy Extreme test for 4k gaming. And here finally things starts make sense. With no OC and UV i got 5666 pts and finally that was average score for my hardware (in the regular one i'm 2000 points behind average score) so slowly i was adding OC and UV and the scores were better and better all the time (5748, 5753 and the last one 5917 which was rated excellent) while the best score in the world is 6,3k so i got 93% of it not 75-78% like before with the regular Time Spy. However still i have no clue whats wrong with the regular test and why my results are so bad there. Any ideas?
Hey david, you seem like a expert in Alienware, for the area51 r2, is there a way to lower the setting to have max performance while using one adapter? (Got mines coming in, thanks to watching your channel, just wondering)
Hi Elizer, nice specs, very similar to mine! The good news is if you just use the 330w PSU you will loose at most 5% (but you won't be able to overclock the CPU on one adapter). I have the same spec with 10700 and 99% of the time I just use the 330w and the difference is so minimal I don't notice a difference! When I get a second I will try with just a 240w plugged in to see how it behaves
Have Read so many comments about Intel Windows Laptop vs M1 MacBook, but I don't watch the video itself. Well......... I really feel a bit sad with Intel's some Flaw and Problem even on newer gen. and Some people said "M1 is the best" I remembered 1 word "Nothing's Perfect". Don't let the negativity get to you, it is the same with everyone also on the AMD Ryzen hype train at the moment. I have an m1 macbook and it is a great ultrabook, I love it for its battery life and how quiet it is. But try and swap it for my Alienware area 51m r2 and I would swing my 4kg beast of a laptop at you :)
Pity that this didn't touch on the real meat of "overclocking" via Afterburner, namely UNDERVOLTING via a custom voltage curve. Not only will this produce (much) higher overclock potential, it will also lower the voltage curve, and thus the Temps at any given clock threshold, as well as squeezing out more performance with a lower TDP, which is crucial for these mobile gpu's with constrained and gimped TDP relative to their desktop counterpart. The video isn't useless, but it's nowhere as useful as it could have been.
Hi Slick, I didn't want to get it too complex for people starting out. And although I use the frequency curve and it can be great if you want to lower the heat and clocks, just overclocking essentially does the same thing. Because these card have a maximum TGP of 140w when overclocking you cannot get the card to go over 140w, instead you are increasing the frequency curve upwards so you are getting higher frequency per voltage step (so essentially the same as doing it manually without the granularity). Hope this makes sense?

Don’t really get that in command centre I can overclock Gupta 300 on core 281 mhz 300 on memory 281mhz but can’t tough the power limit ! Why is that I see you never touched yours on Msi ……m17r4 can I improve this with msi getting confused as mine can crash on the Alienware command centre.
Are you using the undervolting from throttle stop in sequence with msi afterburner? If you run both will the settings shown in both videos be the same together? Or is there different settings I should run?
I use them both combined for the best results. I will detail it in the final video of the tweaking series (should be out tomorrow)
Does MSI support FPS faster then 240 FPS? My current rate in War Thunder is around 250-290 FPS
Appreciate the video, thanks for the thoughtful walkthroughs! Just got the M15 R4 (16 GB RAM, RTX 3070, 512 GB SSD, 300 Hz display) and I have followed the Throttle Stop undervolting video and all is well when adjust and test the voltage offset on my system :)
But, I am having a problem with overclocking using MSI Afterburner.
Just got exact same laptop. Same thing happens when I go too far on the OC. I guess you got a bad OC lottery chip on the GPU?
Hi i'm new to overclocking so pardon my question. How do you balance stability and speed with temperature? It may still be stable but running hotter than i might like. Is there another setting to work with to balance the temp?
Should I check "apply settings at start up"? Considering everything is okie dokie?
Yes definitely 👍
How does the msi afterburner compare to the alien fusion advanced gpu tab? I’ve only just noticed it in the Alienware centre.
I am pretty sure the advanced fusion tab was a bit lacking but I will double check when I am back in the office tomorrow and get back to you 👍
Brilliant! I asked as it seems quite similar in features. Was wondering if it would work any more efficiently than the msi as it was in house software.
@@MashITTech Hi mate, just checking whether you had a chance to consider this? Love your vids by the way 👌🏻
Does the value apply to Alienware x15 too?
It sure does
Really really informative 👌
Thaks mate, good to see you!
@@MashITTech thanks so much
Hey does overclocking reduce longevity of the laptops???
Not in this case as you are still limited to the Nvidia set 140w limit, you are just using a more aggressive voltage frequency (so more performance per watt)
Just ordered my M17 R4 with 3080 and mechanical keyboard after watching all your videos. Can't wait for it too arrive! ☺️☺️
Nice! let me know how it goes :) I am still waiting for my m17 with mech keyboard to arrive! ordered it on the day of launch
@@MashITTech not sure when it will arrive though... One week and still hasn't even entered production 😞
I have those two paramters available on the M17 R3 but apply just does nothing.. the mhz of the GPU never changes.... I was actually trying to UNDER clock it to save some heat....
That’s really odd. I have used this on the r3’s we reviewed
Great response Ali :)
Can you/should undervolt the gpu?
Please could you do a review on ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6 (14" Intel)
Is it the same process for the same m15 but with an RTX3080?
Yes exactly the same 👍
Will these same settings possibly work alright on M15 R3 w/ i7-10750H and RTX 2070 Super Mobile? And would I need too remove Throttlestop at all/Alienware Command Center?
Yep it will also work on r3 and all the tools work fine together 👍
Very impresive very profesional I got miners doing overclock but you explained it like a scientific with the right tools. I'll bypass overclocking but you help me understand it. CLOCK or CORE SPEED DOWN -500, MEMORY UP +1200 that's how miners do it 3:14!
Yep, crank that memory up! I did a fair bit of mining earlier in the year. What are you mining atm?
It appears the MSI afterburner download is having issues, do you know how I can use the Alienware Command Center to do any overclocking or have a video link to that? My computer - M17 R4. Thanks!
Let me see if I can knock something up
@@MashITTech Awesome, thank you so much! :)
Quick question - if I want to hook up an external monitor to this laptop, which option is best, USB, mini DP or Hdmi?
tried the conservative over clock of 100mhz to the core and 200 memory and I get glitches when running time spy ???? m17 r4 3080 model
Oh that is a shame, try dialling it back a little. Unfortunately not all cards are great overclockers.
@@MashITTech i always get the best lock🤣well thanks again for the reply and full subscribed!
Can I just use Alienware command center? it looks like it goes up to 300 hrtz , which I dont think even is possible
Yes you sure can, I just love afterburner for the overlay and other features. And yes, you will never get 300hz! Probably 100-150
I got it clocked on aloenware , 165/300 Graphic score was 11700. I prob could go higher
wow you have got a good chip! well done mate 😀👍
@@MashITTech thanks lol
Got my m17 r4 today it has raid 0 but came with a small m. 2 ssd and 2 2280. Do I need the small one?
That sounds odd, they should use both 2280 slots. Look at my video where I compare the m15 r4 to m17 r4. I open them both and show the m.2 slots, it should answer your question :)
What you think about asus rog strix g17 ryzen 9 5900hx rtx3060 16 gb ram 1 tb memory 144hz screen

@@MashITTech OK that’s good news.
@@MashITTech In the review be nice if you could add the cons and pros for the highest resolution display.
I sure will
@@MashITTech How did you get hold of one as they have over 6 weeks waiting period.
Beware that some people are reporting that Even though they have overclock off in the Alienware command center it's still on. So if this is the case and you overclock it further with afterburner you can damage your Rig beware.
If you turn the overclock off in the command center make sure you restart the computer before using afterburner
does overclocking harm my laptop in the long run?
No because you are still using the same power budget, you are just making the gpu more efficient per watt
The AMD m17 2022 wont let me do anything
I wanna get this laptop so bad but I'm worried its gonna be a toaster with highend games even with fans running fast, also hesitant to get the 3080 for it, while I'd appreciate it to have the newest tech for longer I think compared to the 3070 it might overheat even more
I think you might be right, the 3080 might be pushing it thermally. I think the i7 and 3070 is probably the best config personally. Also my tweaks help with the temps a lot so spend a few minutes tweaking your machine if you get it :)
@@MashITTech thanks a lot for ur advice
Hello know your very busy, but if you can help it would be great.
My model is the i9 and 3080 16gb vram, i have used your overclocked numbers and have gained great temps on the cpu, but slight increase to the gpu performance and wonder if I’m doing anything wrong? P.s my gpu overclock does not show on the awcc.
The overclock probably won't show in AWCC but as long as you can see it in MSI afterburner you should be good. What overclock did you apply within MSI afterburner?
100 on the core clock and 200 on the memory and thank you for the fast reply!!!!
100 core clock should be making a difference, run time spy at stock then with the overclock applied. The gpu score should be a few hundred points higher
@@MashITTech thanks for the help! Sorted it
Dude, is this 1ms response 4k LED display ? Does it go more than 60fps in 4k ?
No, I have the 300hz 1080p
@@MashITTech so my question now is does it go more than 60fps in 4k OLED display? Like if we reduce the graphics?
@@visveswaranr7587 I can't imagine it does atleast on that specific screen, right? The screen refresh rate cannot be exceeded as it is designed for 60 fps. Now if you were to plug it into a display that exceeded that 60 fps threshold then sure.
That’s correct Adnan, you may get more than 60fps in a game but you will be limited to 60hz because of the monitor 👍
@@MashITTech, hey, I’m sorta retarded when it comes to PC gaming etc lol. I want to upgrade cuz I have a 860gtx since 2014 lmao. I want to buy the oled 4K, tracking it’s 60hz. But if you connect it to an external monitor (240hz) are you still getting 60hz? Or can it go up?
Is it alright to just use it on every day basis?
the undervolting will improve lifespan and gpu overclock won't have much effect as you are still capped at 165w TGP limit 👍
Any ideas?

Hi Elizer, nice specs, very similar to mine! The good news is if you just use the 330w PSU you will loose at most 5% (but you won't be able to overclock the CPU on one adapter).
I have the same spec with 10700 and 99% of the time I just use the 330w and the difference is so minimal I don't notice a difference!
When I get a second I will try with just a 240w plugged in to see how it behaves
Have Read so many comments about Intel Windows Laptop vs M1 MacBook, but I don't watch the video itself. Well.........
I really feel a bit sad with Intel's some Flaw and Problem even on newer gen. and Some people said "M1 is the best"
I remembered 1 word "Nothing's Perfect". Probably People in Comment Section forget this word and just made comments that incredibly hurt my heart

Hope this makes sense?
can this damage my laptop in summer ?
Was able to score a 8207 on the 3d mark port royal benchmark with my m17 r4 this morning. It's effectively a desktop rtx 3070 with after a decent overclock
