Question: why would you realistically need a quick button to change which manual lens is on the camera? Changing lens is not something that happens in the blink of an eye. Having the lens identifier in "My Menu" is plenty good enough...
It is essential to caution viewers not to attempt mounting non AI lenses on the DSLRs. It will also be very helpful knowing how to manage a manual zoom lens in setting the focal length. Everyone seems to talk around that subject.
Thank you my friend! I am about to purchase a Nikon D700. I have several lenses which I used on my legendary F3HP. I selected the Nikon D700 to bring these lenses back to life. This video is exactly what I have been searching for. You have answered many questions I have had and some I didn't know to ask. Thank you for taking the time to provide such a well engineered informative video, I really appreciate your efforts. I am thinking, it must feel good to know that you have helped so many people by providing your knowledge for free. Please continue your great work. Thanks again, Richard
great video Konstantin , but you forgot one IMPORTANT limitation, some bodies CAN'T use the 8 & 6 mm fish-eye lenses, the back element protrudes into the space too far (damage the mirror system), or some tele-converters/tele - lenses as well, for same reason, So you NEED to tell the camera assistant when you buy a dslr if you have intention to use any of this "special equipment" so you can get a body, with which they are compatible!! Most likely the Df body, which is specially designed with this compatibility in mind; or the z series, with an FTZ adaptor, which Will be safe with this equipment ( the space is just large enough as I understand) .
Intereting video....for yrs I used a nikon D50....so I have several lenses. One of which is a 50 mm, 1.8. I also have now a Nikon D3400. I didn't do all that you showed but I can attach the lens first by pushing a little button ON the lens, turning the aperature ring to 22, the lens fits THEN pushing that little level the opposit direction to have access to the aperature ring. Interestingly I don't seem to be able t shoot in A mode, only manual .
Hi, thanks for the very informative video. I didn't quite understand your point at the end about other Nikon models e.g. 3000 series. Would it be possible to use a manual lens on a Nikon D3300? I think I've read that it's possible.
Hi Daniel, you can certainly put a manual focus lens onto the D3300 but you won't be able to tell the camera what the lens is, so it will be all manual and a matter of checking your exposure after taking your photo and adjusting accordingly. Hope that helps!
This was an excellent review. I've done this before and the procedures work. I've adapted my old (radioactive) Minolta lenses to the camera, but I'm having difficulties setting it up. Excellent presentation as ever.
I used those custom settings to put white balance on the function button of my D3x because the white balance settings on the tiny rear supplementary LED screen on the camera back were virtually impossible for me to see. PS. I'm a fan of the live streams.
Thanks for the video , it took me some time to set this up after I got a D7000 , but once set up and a button assigned it is in regular use as I rarely use autofocus lenses for subjects other than wildlife
Great video, everything went just as shown on my camera. If you have the Function Button set up as described and are in No. 1 or other numbers and want to go back to an Auto Focus lens do you have to reset anything back to the previous settings (auto focus lens). Does the camera reset to the previous settings if you power off and on?
one other IMPORTANT issue, as far as manual lens use is : there are some times the camera shows an ERR on the iris number, one simple fix, add non -CPU data, SET the lens data correctly, use A or M mode only! If the lens iris KNOB is off it's lock position, or the lens is not a 'D' series, ie: totally old school manual lens: set the menu setting for aperture control ( pencil, F5( controls, customise command dials) , Aperture setting) to OFF {gives iris control over from the sub-command dial to the lens ring}-if normal auto lens is used afterwards, REVERSE the F5 mode to ON, otherwise sub-command dial is non-functional :-), also consider adding this Aperture setting to the my menu list as well, great time saver.
Hi James, Depending on what camera you're using, through a DSLR viewfinder you'll get the usual solid spot in the bottom left-hand corner of an optical viewfinder. For mirrorless cameras and their focusing aids, check out our video here: th-cam.com/video/C1GRnvIKEHQ/w-d-xo.html
Lovely video mate. It's already helped me. My friend has a D7000 and although I created a 24mm lens the camera doesn't seem to meter when I manually chance aperture using the ring on the lens. So It will simply meter for the max aperture was. Is that expected?
Thanks for the video, but... What can I do with a NikonD3400 camera? Do you have another configuration for this camera (that doesn´t have the non-CPU lens data menu)? Thanks
I have a d7500 and a vintage lens, and as you stared the d7500 does not have non CPU settings but is there a adopter which can be used to make this lens work with my camera.
Hi Kon: How accurate/precise do we have to be with the information entered? E.g., if I forgot to change from 35mm to 50mm, what would happen? What if the menu doesn't have the exact focal length? E.g., Lomography Daguerreotype lens is 62mm , do I use 58 or 70? How about aperture, if a lens is F1.9, do I use 1.8 or 2.0? (I understand the focal length is important in the Z series for the IBIS). Thank you.
Hi David! There won't be much difference in terms of exposure if the aperture and focal distance values are fairly close. E.g. f/1.8, f/2.0, f/2.8 apertures or 28, 35, 50mm focal distance. Also Nikon advises to choose the closest value greater than the actual focal length of the lens if the correct focal length is not listed. However if the lens is set to a very different number in NON CPU setting, for example F/16 or very different focal distance (e.g. 200mm) there will be a difference in terms of exposure readings. Here is an example of a small test I did: D850 in aperture priority mode, 85mm f/2 AI lens with the aperture ring is set wide open at f/2, ISO 1600. Camera is set on a tripod, reading the same scene. These values are set and will not change during the test. Test 1: 1. NON CPU is set to 85mm f/2: exposure reading of the scene: 1/500 sec 2. NON CPU is set to 85mm f/16: exposure reading of the scene: 1/250 sec 3. NON CPU is set to 28mm f/2: exposure reading of the scene: 1/640 sec 4. NON CPU is set to 28mm f/16: exposure reading of the scene: 1/250 sec Test 2: 1. NON CPU is set to 85mm f/2: exposure reading of the scene: 1/500 sec 2. NON CPU is set to 85mm f/1.8: exposure reading of the scene: 1/500 sec 3. NON CPU is set to 85mm f/1.4: exposure reading of the scene: 1/800 sec 4. NON CPU is set to 85mm f/2.8: exposure reading of the scene: 1/500 sec 5. NON CPU is set to 85mm f/4: exposure reading of the scene: 1/500 sec TL;DR: If it's close enough you should be ok, even if it is out of whack it is not the end of the world and recoverable. The main reason you want to keep it clean is to have nice EXIF data to refer to at later stage. Hope this data helps. Kind regards, Konstantin Kochkin
I did everything as you suggested and still the shooting button won’t click. I have a nikon D7200 and Revuenon lens 135mm f/2.8 (just bought them second handed). I’m wondering if it’s something wrong with the lens. Please suggest. I’d appreciate your reply.
Our pleasure! Please note that lens data are not adjusted when non-CPU lenses are zoomed in or out. The data for different focal lengths can be entered as separate lens numbers, or the data for the lens can be edited to reflect the new values for lens focal length and maximum aperture each time zoom is adjusted. So not convenient, but possible. Kind regards, Konstantin Kochkin Technical Advisor

I have two 50mm ai lenses (f2 and f1.4) and I've tried them on my D7000. I went into the camera's menu and added each lens successfully using the Non CPU option. I noticed that the lens does not close down the diaphragm/aperture when I take the picture. This means that I'm only able to shoot at wide open apertures (f2 and f1.4). I do see that camera's on screen aperture correctly corresponds to the aperture on the lens but this is of no use if the lens aperture doesn't close to the chosen aperture. Did I do something wrong in my setup or is this a limitation in using ai lenses on dslrs?
