GENERALIZED DYSTONIA, SURGICAL TREATMENT

Dystonias are a group of neurological diseases in which sustained muscle contractions are seen, producing abnormal postures among affected individuals. These disorders are disabling, and compromise will be according to the number of muscles involved by the disease. There are several types of dystonic patterns, from small isolated muscles affected to generalized involvement of the body (see video). Treatment will be related to the clinical features observed, it includes medications, physical therapy, botulinum toxin injections and surgery, among others. This video shows a severe generalized dystonia that completely resolves after surgical treatment: a left palidotomy plus deep brain stimulation on the right pallidum. Benefit from this type of therapy will remain over the years, this subject remains in excellent clinical condition even 5 years after surgical treatment was performed.
