10:57 Believe it or not, there were 5 digit phone numbers in some parts of the US at one point. A lot of smaller cities had 4 or 5 digit phone numbers before the number format for North America was standardized. In some places it was even possible to dial a phone number using only the last 4 or 5 digits as late as the early 2000s. This only worked with certain types of phone switches (step by step/Strowger) and depended on the numbering plan for a calling area, but it was possible.
Our mall's 'high end' AV store ran a laserdisc copy of Top Gun on constant loop for something like 5 years, split to every TV/audio system in the store (this was pre-DVD).

Smooth jazz has potential to make good music videos, they just need the right people. And the "kings of the weather channel" are a great band and it sort of offends me that they didn't get an actual full on animation studio to make something bigger than what we saw here.
My first computer was an NEC. Seeing that old logo of theirs again brought a nostalgic smile to my face!

As for the cut from The Rippingtons, that music was used on The Weather Channel for the Fall Foliage forecasts w/ Jim Cantore in the early 90s, every Wednesday afternoon in the fall season.
At least they didn't replace Raul Julian with an Irish guy that performs c-sections with his bare hands so that he can do some shady real estate scheme and somehow makes it more boring than how I'm describing it.

***** I'm more familiar with the Mystery Science Theater 3000 treatment, but I also saw it uncut. All the elements of this NEC video are there; nondescript office building, black background room with nothing but a desk, and cheap computer graphics.

It's 3 am, I'm halfway through my night shift job, and I'm in tears laughing at the Rippingtons video.
The one guy in the 'room of voiceovers' was definitely the commercial guy that says "Sorry, no CODs"

I'm happy to watch the video under the best "A" conditions possible with a decent DAC into a decent hi-fi, but you're wrong if you think I'm not going to watch this on my crappy laptop screen.
So I found one of the 1996 Video Essentials Laserdiscs today while thrifting. 66 cents later it was mine, and when I got home I fired it up. I've got quite a few tweaks to do to my CRT TV (the one I use for all analog media including of course LaserDisc) but I'm amazed at how well I had already set everything - including the actual image position and the like, all the good old service mode stuff that you need a manual to do.
TV still has a few issues that I think are just part of its design and age, but damnit if I still won't use that disc on my next off day to perfect the color on that set, as well as use the audio test portion to double check my audio setup.
My.. analog video setup is a little insane :|

I was a junior in High School when I bought my first one. I think I did alright.

Hearts of Space featured it in a 1990 compilation called "Universe 1", which I think that's what you meant to refer to in the closing credits. It's also on "OMNI Volume 7: Close Encounter". I know that since I happen to have the CD's in my collection.

I actually picked up that same Pioneer Laser Optics II disc a couple of weeks ago. If anything, it kind of gave me ideas of what other discs I may want to seek out in the future.

I'm watching this on my calibrated 1080p Sony 46" HDTV and Pioneer 5.1 home theater. I actually have several of these DVDs, but no LDs.
There are some extensive PAL test images on the Encore Entertainment "Jason and the Argonauts" laserdisc box set (all CAV)

at 21:47 my Sony DVD changer has this and so does my PC. only difference on pc is that it looks for up to 7.1 set of speakers instead of the traditional 5.1.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't some Disney and Lucasfilm DVDs contain a THX calibration test in the DVD menu (or do those not count)?
My 2-Disc Monsters Inc. DVD has a THX calibration test.
can you show how to actualy properly adjust an old Television (I never needed to do that as all of my televisions have autoadjusting in them or I just don't notice unadjusted picture)
Use the AVS 709 Calibration dvd it will guide you step by step on how to do it.
