Nice job on the hat there 👍 I have seen how they make the cowboy hats and I wonder if it can be made the same way in 1/6th scale? All you really need is a positive and a negative shape of the mold and to steam the leather before pressing it into the mold. When I did the asian farmer hat for my custom 1/6 Mortal Kombat Raiden figure I used yarn. I took a string of it and I cut it into pieces at about 2 inches long, that I then seperated all the tiny strains that made up the string of yarn. I then made a shape of the hat in cardboard and started gluing the tiny strains of yarn onto the cardboard hat using wooden glue. I layed the strains in a crossing pattern around on the cardboard hat to make sure it wouldn’t fall apart. I just kept on covering the cardboard layer by layer untill I couldn’t see the cardboard anymore. Once that was done I just painted the hat orange and I was done. The yarn gave it that straw hat look too. I supposed that you could even use fabrics and wooden glue as well. Just create a shape to form the fabrics around, wet the fabrics so that it can hold a shape, and just paint it with wooden glue or textile glue and try to make the fabrics hold the shape untill the glue is set. Then you can carefully trim the edges off. Making the hat out of one piece of fabric will make it look alot better since you won’t be getting any seams.
When I think about it… Ask your husband if he can 3D print a mold for you. Just find a model of a hat and create a second piece that will make up the other half of the mold. I bet you could make tons of hat like it was nothing then 👍

You did all of that with that Asian hat? Wow. That had to take forever. I'm going to have to re-look at it again. I never thought about using glue to hold a shape. That's a brilliant idea. I will also ask my husband if there are molds out there for hats. It would definitely look better to have that option and take much less work. I can't get over your hat. I'm going to look at it again!!! 🤗🤗❤️🤗🤗 You have a great day today!!!

@@UndergroundActionFigures Search for videos on TH-cam on how they make cowboy hats. It looks like a simple process to me. If you use wooden glue and yarn it should be relatively easy, I think. It was actually a simple process making that straw hat. What really took a little time was seperating the yarn into individual stings, but if you twist the yarn the opposite way first so that you can see the individual strings better then it gets easier. I tried making it like they do the real straw hats at first, but that was so difficult. Just criss-crossing the strains of yarn and keep brushing on glue was easier and it sort of looked the same. You just start off my brushing the wooden glue onto a shape first and start laying on the yarn. Let it dry a little before you add another layer and you just continue untill you are happy with how it looks. If it starts to look too thick, then just let it dry completely and then you can sand it down a little. If you start seeing the template shape through the yarn, them you just patch it up.

The headsculpt looks a little old for Pony Express rider based on the history you shared. Just a thought.

Yes, you are right. It would have been nice to have had a younger head to showcase for this rider, especially since the youngest rider on record was 11.
However, I also noted in the video that I would surmise that some riders were probably older than the targeted population.
That would be a logical assumption given that some territories to travel through would require a certain knowledge base of the terrain and familiarity with regional customs would be my guess.
Of course, any rider would need to meet the weight requirements--that goes without saying.
After doing a touch more research, I did substantiate my assumption just now. The Pony Express Museum noted that riders' ages ranged from 11, the youngest on record, all the way to the mid-forties.
My head sculpt would work, given how rough life was back then. A number of sources I consulted noted that life was harder back then and people often looked older than we do now due to a variety of factors: nutrition, health care problems, backbreaking work, and other variables.
The Pony Express Museum noted that the average age was 20; thus, even though the target population they wanted was young, orphaned men, the reality is that it was likely the weight that determined the outcome of employment and whether or not the owners felt as if a particular rider would be a good one. The average age of 20 suggests a broader range of ages existed in the total number of riders.
Thus, I had guessed right in the end. Still, I would have preferred a younger head sculpt. I do have one on the way that I may use for this rider unless I find a better use for it. Thank you for chiming in. It forced me to look further into the history. I love doing that!!! 🤗🤗🤗
