One thing you should also consider with champs like Skarner is the CC score in order to properly assess how useful you were. Your CC enabled your team to do much more damage whilst Kayn probably had very low CC score.
how do i macro as skarner? i feel like i'm usually pretty good at beating my opponent in farm, but i also feel like skarner is pretty bad at ganking. I usually do better counter ganking than regular ganking, but maybe that's because of my low elo.

Skarner is more useless ahead than most champs when they're behind. Riot needs to show the scorpion some respect and get his rework out.
