    Just start turning them around and teach them to go down them backwards. That’s how we’ve done our two. They learned fast.

      This comment is so true! I taught my grandkids to go up and down all the steps we have so they could play upstairs in their room. They learned very quickly and no matter what I make sure they go down the steps on their bellies. They are never allowed to try to go down the steps standing, holding onto the railing. 🙂

    I spray my kids stuffed toys with Lysol to sanitize. You have to make sure to let it dry all the way before you give it back to them, though.

    House keeper here! To sanitize the toys that have batteries but are also stuffed ... there’s a few chemicals that are not harmful to animals and babies that you can spray on your furniture , plush toys , bed , etc. one I have used a lot since COVID is OdoBan it’s affordable and it serves sooo many different purposes like cleaning, disinfecting, odor eliminator, laundry, and it also works on glass and mirrors!!

      I agree - if it's the most economical and the easiest to do, it doesn't matter what it looks like. It would be kind of fun to have it multi-coloured actually - like a colorful little ring around the playroom, haha. I must add, that it's a good thing you live in California because there won't be a lot of pool noodles in any of our stores until May probably.
      Merry Christmas to all who read this. From my home and family to you and yours, I hope your Christmas is beautiful and that 2021 is a good year for us all!

    Pool noodles, big enough to be easy to see. Removable when you have company, or when kids are in bed. Just slice them lengthwise and slip it on... so cheap too.

      Yup, agreed. You may have to use some double sided tape, but the good news is it's tile instead of wood or laminate, so you can scrub any residue from the tape, if necessary.

    For sanitizing the toys, I work at a daycare and we spray EVERYTHING with bleach water, including our soft toys! We use about a cap full of bleach in a big spray bottle and its diluted enough that it wont affect the color or anything but it still gives you that peace of mind about getting rid of germs

    Put the stuffed animals in sealed plastic bag. And leave in the garage for a few days. That’s how I did my kids stuffed animals when they got head lice. To prevent them from being reinfected. So I am sure it will work for germs too.

    My in-laws have the same step in their house! We sat there with our girls and showed them to climb up and down repeatedly. Normal crawl up, backwards down. We showed them how to go slow and be aware of the drop. It took maybe a week until they understood and haven’t had any issues at all since.

    Maybe have Justin build a ramp that you can remove when the kids are old enough! Then no corners and you can stain it or paint it to look good there!

  • @MarisaAndChew
    @MarisaAndChew 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Please don't listen to everyone on the Lysol spray or disinfecting spays!!! They are very clear on the instructions that it needs to be washed off of food prep areas. I know the toy isn't a food prep area BUT it is going in and out of mouths and in the tiny hands of ppl who are putting their hands in their eyes and mouths! If it was me... I would just pop out the batteries and put stuffies in the dryer on high heat for an hour. That heat should kill a lot of germs and the tumble will help remove any allergens or other debris from them. You could also spay them until damp and then hang them out in the sun and let the sun and nature do it's thing! It works great for cloth diapers!

  • @jessika6482
    @jessika6482 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Justin could convert that step into a temporary ramp. Build it with wood, set in in place with brackets or heavy duty velcro, and finish it using the same tile that’s on the rest of the house. When the kids are old enough, or before moving out, remove it.

    I know a lot of them suggested pool noodles but be careful if you do. Some are soft enough for babies to take a bite out and you might not notice a tiny piece or chunk ending up in their mouth to choke on. They will teethe on anything. Love watching all three of your little cuties growing and learning. Sure brightens up some lonely isolated days. Thanks for sharing! God bless.

    I am not sure I'd do this with a stuffy that has some feature that requires batteries, but I often put my daughter's stuffed animals (if they weren't visibly dirty) in a garbage bag and *put them in the deep freeze* for a day or two. People often forget that extreme cold kills germs as well as heat and soap. Spraying them with Lysol or a watered down bleach solution 1:10 with water (bleach being the 1 part, water is 10 parts) is fine too. I never liked them getting wet though. I just kept thinking about all the stuffing inside being wet and getting musty, etc. and it grosses me out. Using the freezer, the toys don't get wet, soggy, musty, etc. Sometimes, I'd just kind of spot wash them with hot soapy water being careful not to get them sopping wet because let me tell you, stuffies do not fair well in the dryer. Just ask my daughter's favorite dog stuffed animal back in the day, who came out of the dryer with a perm.
    My personal preference is the freezer or the bleach/water 1:10 spray bottle. You could use any cleaner that kills bacteria and germs, such as Lysol liquid, Mr. Clean, etc. Simply be sure to make a weak solution. Gauge it by the instructions on the packaging and then make it about 1/2 as strong. Most cleaners recommend more than a person needs to clean and kill germs effectively because there is no harm of it when it's on floors and counters, but you really only need about a tbsp per 2 cups of water. More important is to use as hot a water as both you and the toy can tolerate!

    Lysol disinfectant spray for toys with batteries. Make sure it’s completely dry before they play with it again. Also, I heard a trick for keeping the water out of toys with the small hole in them is used hit glue to seal it. That way there is no way for any bacteria or mold to get in there which can cause problems for your children. Maybe get a gate for that area that way they can crawl in both rooms safely that way you aren’t so worried(:
    The boys are growing so dang fast! 🥰🥰

    Home Depot has foam edging that you could look into... (www.homedepot.com/p/Safety-1st-Espresso-Foam-Edge-Bumpers-4-Pack-HS165/203754474) it should be small enough that it wouldnt get tripped over... I've seen pool noodles along edges like that, but I can see it being tripped over very easily.
    Also, I know you've shopped at Buy Buy Baby - and they have some options too... though these say for table, you could use some of these anywhere... (www.buybuybaby.com/store/category/health-safety/babyproofing/edge-corner-guards/32235/)

    How about blocking that area with your couch, until the boys are a little more agile! I realise they could still go around it but it might give you just a little more time to keep up with them. The other option is to put up gating, like blocking a fireplace.

    I was a preschool teacher, just like you, and we sanitized all the toys everyday with diluted bleach per state regulations. 2 tablespoons bleach to 1 quart water in a spray bottle remade every day because the solution loses strength with time. Then let sit for 30 minutes. We used this on all types of toys. Just a thought. As for the stair edge, they sell edge protectors on Amazon. I like the clear one personally. I think it’s great you’re letting the boys learn how to go up and down the step on their own. I usually put the safety gate up a step or two to allow for learning and up 3 or 4 steps as the children get more adept.

    You need to look into Nugget or Blocksy for your boys! You could lay the mat pieces on that edge, but I would just let them continue going up and down it.. you have boys you can’t protect them from every bump or bruise, as a mom of 5 boys you’d have to wrap them in bubble wrap the rest of their lives if you want to stop the bumps or bruises lol

  • @apriltownsend8463
    @apriltownsend8463 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Get some weather stripping of some sort that at least kind of matches the color of the floor so it doesn't look too weird or buy some of the edging pieces that you'd babyproof the corners with and use it and put pillows on the floor so if they do fall. I would say cut up a pool noodle but I don't know if they'd be out right now. You can use Lysol spray on the soft toys when Emma is down for a nap (just don't SOAK them in it LOL) and let them air dry in a place where she doesn't see them for a few days until they dry and the smell calms down. Since it IS really strong I would do it outside like you just did these though unless you have a little time where their naps overlap so they're all out of the room for a bit.

    with toys that can’t go through the laundry, we will either spray with force of nature (it is an all natural cleaner that uses something our immune systems already create to fight illness and bacteria. it’s just created and used as a cleaner! which makes it safe to use around animals and kids!) like you would fabreze and then quarantine for a few days (because it’s not an aerosol so it needs to dry) or *just* quarantine for an extended period of time without spraying them first.

    My suggestion for the step would be one of those strip thingies made of rubber you can use to windproof windows and doors...I have no idea what they are called, but you can get them in very long sizes so that you can trim them into the size you need. Then you can stick them on the door's or window's edges (they're self sticking). I don't know if you know what I mean since it doesn't get very cold where you live and you probably don't need them on your windows. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    First I want to say I think your introduction is the best! Out of all the TH-cam intro videos I've seen yours is my absolute favorite. Your boys are so cute. And Emma is a little doll. Oh my goodness she is so cute. For toys that cant be washed I usually use lysol spray and let it air out for a few hours. I have 2 girls. One is 16 and special needs. And my youngest just turned 3 in August. Love your channel and your beautiful family.

    Cover it with a stair bumper (kind of the same stuff for a fire place.). My son fell on one of those type steps and had to get stitches. You can also use thick weather type stripping.

    Teach the boys safe entry like when they are in the pool. They will pick it up super fast. Place them on their buttons, then turn their body to the right/left, place one hand down then the other and let them do down backwards.

    Safety 1st makes a foam bumper kit that is pretty flush to the floor. It comes in one long strip you cut to size.

    Soft toys I washed with antibacterial inwash sanitiser.
    And toys with mechanical. I wet clothed wiped over them with same antibacterial in wash diluted. And sprayed with Glen 20.im in Australia not sure if called different were ubare

    What we did with our sharp edges on our steps is put a edge protector there it comes in Rubber and you can put that on the edge just like you would do to the counters also we put memory foam carpeting so if they did fall or mess if not so bad

    They have a plastic strip for protection of corners for walls, that’ll help, they are thin

    You can usually run a dry mode with your dish washer and its really hot so it sanitizes toys or run them though without soap and for toys that have batteries what ever cleaner you usually sanitizes with or personally I use Lysol wipes then put them up to dry and wipe them down with a hot wet rag

    Wow they are all so cute!! Personally I’d have to gate things up or use play pens...they are super strong and so mobile but such bubba’s still, I don’t know how you even keep track of them 😂😂 I am worrier and see danger everywhere though so I’m sure a pool noodle works good too 😂🤦‍♀️

    I wonder if weatherstripping would work? It comes in different thicknesses.

    For the sunken playroom I wouldn't spend too much money on it, because the boys will learn how to turn around and go down it. For the meantime, I'd buy a plush rug runner and put it in under the step.
    Teach the boys to go backwards down the stair and if they were to go head first, the plush rug would be there and they wouldn't get hurt.
    Maybe use electrical tape to cover the concrete edge. Or...if Justin has the time, he could build a transition strip to go over it.

    Home Depot has the bull nose step edging, there should be some that's sloped. Your sister-in-law may be able to help you find something that works best.

    Hey Rachelle!! Cut a pool noodle to fit the edge and just use some tape to hold it alternatively you can use bubble wrap for extra padding! Hope that helps! 1/3 cup vodka and the rest with water in a spray bottle will sanitize toys just let them dry before giving it to the kids.

    It’s not ideal but I would put some type of a rubber mat along that area that got just past the sharp edge as well as where you step down in case they fall from the top and secure to the floor for a temporary fix

    I have a little step at my house too when my first born was 9 months and walking I was so scared he was going to go off the step and fall on the hardwood floor. We got the soft puzzle play mats and so that it was soft for him to climb up and down the step and he could see the different color and know it’s a step.

    Lap a real big rug over the whole area kinda like you would do a staircase. That way falls won't be to hard and no sharp edges.

    What about a rubber threshold ramp? Amazon has them. It would sit flush against the step and create an incline instead of a step

    Maybe you can put a baby gate and live a little section to make like a slide/ramp so they can slide instead of fell. AAAND they can still have access to go up and down. I don't know if this makes sense to you lol.

    To prevent the twins hurting themselves on the step , you cld get some sort of soft flooring or rug to cover and go over the long step, and stuck down (?)
