  • A how to and demo of a winching method to get get your vehicle out of the mud, a log out of the road or anything else you need to move.
    A rope and two poles are all you need. You can also do it more urban way and replace the wood with pipes or rebars i.e.
    This method is also called Mors Kochanski`s flip-flop winch.
    Please watch and feel free to comment, like and subscribe.
    Enjoy!

    For people that don't understand, this is amazing. Could of used this idea when my winch failed and my 4 ton come-a-long got left at home.
    This can be the difference between life and death for many 4 whiling single party adventurers out there. I was stuck for 2 days and almost froze to death.
    I love learning new things, thanks you very much for the time and video.

      I`m glad to share, I have used this to move a big log from a road as well as it can be used to winch a car. Using thinner stronger poles, ie. steel bars, you can pull even heavier loads, as long as the rope holds.
      Thank you for watching

    I have read that throwing a "rug" or anything similar over the tight rope is what you do to keep the rope from whipping back if it fails. Anyone who says to just buy a come along has not been all alone and seen Plan A go to Plan D and so on. My question is about using a chain instead, would that be an option.

  • @miciahk
    @miciahk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would have tied the rope through the wheels of the pull wheel on the vehicle like I have done several times before and been out within 10 minutes......... Less energy expended also. I have been in some hell of a bad bogs and gotten out of the worst one by doing it my way. The rope did not get entangled or anything. Plus, you have the choice to winch yourself forward or in reverse.

    • @NorwegianBushcraft
      @NorwegianBushcraft  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can try a ground anchor. Put a solid pole way into the ground and tie it of as close to the ground as possible.
      If you dont have a pole, you can try to dig your spare tire down in the ground, or if you in a rocky area, jam soemthing between some rocks or in a crack in a rock side. Or tie it to another vechicle if possible.
      I`ve used a snow anchor ones, it was a big log, digged it down in the snow 90 degrees on the rope and covered it with snow.
      If you dont have anything at all to tie a rope to, then try other technuiqes.
      Thanks for watching

    • @gregkendall3559
      @gregkendall3559 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@philiphinton1350 I miss typed. What I meant is that towballs are not supposed to be used for recovery operations as they tend to break off when used this way and become deadly projectiles that often kill or mame people. I have seen video of a guy killed by a flying towball that broke lose and hit a bystander in the head and killed him.

    Great video! Thank you for making it. I am sure that there are tons of other things you could have done for fun instead of showing us this technique. This may never be used by thousands of people, but it may save one person's life someday because they watched this.
    Regarding those few people who say things like, "good drivers never get stuck", it goes to show how poor of a driver they really are. "Good drivers", as they say, are always prepared for what could happen wherever they drive. You can't always perfectly tell ground conditions, like saturation, liquefaction, etc., from the drivers seat. Also, you could be a passenger in a car that gets stuck, and this could get you out.
    I would rather be a knowledgeable driver who knows how to take care of things, than a loudmouth TH-cam wannabe whose solution is "just don't get stuck." Thanks for the great video!

    • @NorwegianBushcraft
      @NorwegianBushcraft  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, yes it work great. I dont care to much about comments like that. If you do any kind of 4x4 driving, you will probably get stuck one day. But this technique can be used for so many tasks. Moving a big tree in the road, put some tension on something and much more.

    People don't recommend using tow ball to winch yourself out. If you stand near a heavily tense elastic rope, even much less so -- you get the ball flying directly into your head.

      +Frank Fullum Yes so I have heard. I also remember to have seen it on an old military poster of improvized stuff for helping you in the field. That was from the 1950 or 1960`s. I guess this method has been around for a very long time, but that Mors Kochanski introduced it into bushcraft. I might be wrong.

    No no no do not winch on your ball hitch! it can break off and fly at someone at hundreds of mph! Though for this particular example I suppose the rope would snap first

    • @NorwegianBushcraft
      @NorwegianBushcraft  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Pedro Amargosa I would belive the rope snaps first yes. I have never experiences a ball hitch break myself, never heard of it eiter. But it can happend. I used the ball to show that simple knot that will easily loosen after heavy loading.

      This may hold true for Class 3 (5k pound/2.3 kg) and under type hitched of the US style, but mainly applies to using in a snatching manner of recovery. European ball mounts are made more different with the ball forged with the neck, but still one will want to remain vigilant if using the hitch ball in a winch recovery as something unforeseen weakening the structure like fractures will likely give away if the rope does not give out first. If anything make sure to bring along a hitch receiver shackle mount to tie the rope to for a 'stronger' connection.

    Nice video nice to see that old trick work great, when I got stuck real bad my dad told me not a problem, he start doing the same thing and I was thinking well this is gone be a waste of time, but it work, I was stuck even more than you are in the video, with brain power you can do almost everything, I was surprise to see your method that is the same as my dad teach me, and it work on snow machine and 4 wellers too, thanks for the good memories, sometime the simple thing make a big difference, I was going to sub to your channel, but I already did some time ago, good work :) But never forget to bring an axe or something that cut wood, or you will pass a long time with a knife, that is why I always have rope or straps, it should be in every truck or car when going like this, it take almost no money and you have a way to get out when stuck, for me I include a comealong ( sorry the name in english is probably not the same but I try :) I learn long time ago never jsut have one way, more is better and you wont pass 12 hours and freeze before you get out, people now have cell phone, they think they will be able to get help if need it, but in case your cell dont work or have signal your up for a cold night, so again thanks and for the ones that did not know, always good to have the max infos in any situation, things can turn ugly fast, take care :)

      Hi Danny!
      Glad to bring you some memories back. I remember I saw this method in a old army folder from the 60`s. And later seen it again as "Mors Kochanski`s flip-flop winch". It works great, and I have used it to move bigger logs and trees. In this video I was not really stuck, it was a big hole there to drive into, and when disconnecting the 4WD, I could not get up, perfect for the demo. I will say that a car in a ditch might be the heaviest load suited for this method, but as you say for a ATV or snowmobile it is great. Or any other thing that would need to be moved around.
      Thanks for watching

      Thanks for your reply, yes old memories, I think the old way is always winning on the new ways, now people use portable winch with a chainsaw, works great but if the machine stop working you got not to much options, this method just use brain power, and never fail, unless your 4 feet in the mud, other tricks work great too, but my dad always told me that never trust any mechanical things, and now I know why he said that, mechanical things are more subject to break, like a winch or any others, I learn it but never use it till my winch gives up on me, it was late and dark, this is when I think of my dad told me and trust me now I know why, for this I still use tools or witch but always have method like yours just in case, and I got in trouble 1 time, that al it take, I did this method ( it was a snowmobile ) stuck in slush, we try couple of thing but not working or break, so I use what I was told, and it work, pretty sure you know when a snowmobile is stuck in slush, it seem to weight a ton, the same with a 4X4, took more time but never fail, and one of the most important one was my friend breaking the ice with is snbomobile, he was in a bad position, so we try to rescue him but for some reason it just wont work, so we try this method, he was very cold and had to go to the hospital, but this trick save is life, so my opinion is always have a plan b and c just in case, and never trust any mechanical that can broke at any time, sure it's good to have, but never rely only on it, just little bit of thinking and we save is life and the dog too, but for the dog we had to get to him to make sure he hold to the rope, the dog was so drain from the cold that it could not even move anymore, so I put the rope around me and go until the ice break, I got to the dog and bring it back too, sorry if not to clear my english is not that great, so it can save life that is why I make this video importand, and to tell you the truth, I never think I would saw this trick here, so again thanks and for me the old way never fail, simple to learn and easy to do, what can you ask more ???, the only thing I have to say is for the 4X4, it took 2 persons to do, it was so deep and heavy that my weight was not enough, I forgot to say this method works great when you cut trees, goes where you want when other things around, so we put weight on it and the tree drop where it was supose to be, I hope that some people take this video seriously, it really can save your but or somebody else one day, you never know what mother nature trow at you :)

  • @dwightstewart7181
    @dwightstewart7181 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    First, get a real 4x4 vehicle. Second, install decent off-road or all-terrain tires. Third, install a real electric winch. Problem solved, and a lot easier. We tend to call this proper preparation.
    Okay, if all else fails, tie a rope through the wheel spokes, centered over the tire, and allow the slowly spinning tire to wind the rope in over the tire. This should allow you to easily move two or three feet to get out of the hole you're in. Hell, just throwing a rope (rubber floor mat, etc) under the slowly spinning tire to provide traction will more-often-than-not work.

    If you have a stump in the background, tie a double loop at each end, equally wrap and tie rope to stump, then to both car tires. Make wrapped loop on each tire, so that when tire spins it wraps up rope on tire tread groove, and equally pulls vehicle towards stump.
    If you have a stump, and a double headed pulley, you can make a compound pulley and lever. Attached rope to pulley head and wrap-tie around stump. Use excess tope and thread through other pulley head and wrap-tie to hitch. Bring rope back to and through pulley head. With end of rope, make a trucker's hitch or loop. Carve out a sizeable-strong, 3-4 inch diameter pole with a carved point. Put carved pole stick through locking loop, and jam into ground. Make a notch on the pole at the stump to vehicle rope height. Place the roop loop at the notch and tighten the loop. Lean back, pulling the pole toward you, pulling rope loop through pulley toward vehicle. Wrap stick with excess rope. Continue jamming the stick into the same ground, leaning the stick backwards, levering the rope out of the pulley toward the vehicle.
    With a stump, a double headed pulley, rope, and vehilcle. Wrap-tie around stump. Thread rope into and around one pulley head. Thread rope again through pulley head and into (and out of) the next pulleyhead. Rope around hitch allowing free play. Thread back through and out back to vehicle tire. Make locking loop around tire, and attach into tire groove. Drive the tires in reverse, wrapping the rope around the tire and pulling the vehicle backwards. Other more complex pulley and leverage can be also done.

    actually, what you are doing looks incredibly dangerous if that's a dynamic climbing rope. if it breaks it will whip back like a bungy cord and could take your head off.

    • @NorwegianBushcraft
      @NorwegianBushcraft  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, i`ve snapped a climbing rope before and it doesnt break all in ones, it will whip a little bit, but less than a steel wire from a winch. All winching is dangerous, and as said in the video a static rope is better. This was the only rope I had at the time capable to pull this load. Its a discarded climbing rope, it doesnt have any big falls, but its to old to be used for climbing. I have used it for rapelling, but not any more after this video :)
      A comealong is a very nice to have item, but then you will need to have it with you, as you would do if you plan to something like this or expect the posibility that you have to. This method I show in the video are a method for moving logs, roots, rocks, stretching a rope or pulling a car without any other equipment than a rope.
      Personally I would prefer a comealong if I know I have to pull something.
      Thanks for watching and commenting. Good thing to mention the come-a-long.

    Notice you had enough rope to make a "swifffer".. Double the line back to your truck. take a stick 2feet long and twist until you get unstuck.. We used to use this method on Rigging & holding tones of cargo in cargoship holds. Very simple, cheep and effective. Your doing basically the same method with longer poles and more time consuming. Just saying

    • @NorwegianBushcraft
      @NorwegianBushcraft  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you able to pull this heavy load with that method? I would think that it will be very hard to twist after a wilde, and your not able to pull it very far?
      With this method you can pull until the whole stick is filled with rope.
      I would like to hear more about that method.
