    What I want from a starting pitcher is 3 things. Good control, staying healthy, and 4 types of pitches so they can consistently get through the line up 3 times a game. Tall pitchers have to work a lot harder to meet 2 of those standards; control and staying healthy. I think control isn't as valued in the league as it should be. Stroman shows why it should be valued higher with his groundball rate and hard hit ball rate.

    • @anthonylombardo1261
      @anthonylombardo1261 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@rustyshackelford4224there’s a lot to infer here with a statement like this, which is appropriate, and you need a good background of the type of players he’s listing and mentioning. You’d have to apply your own knowledge but I understand it… anyway stroman does force the batter to make more contact on pitches he’s not expecting, because he has better control than average, which means batters should expect any 1 of stromans pitches can be thrown as a strike, nothing is strictly to fool you. So you gotta make contact anyway you can to avoid a strikeout looking. There’s some more to it but that’s the main point I’m tired of typing.

But a superstar is at least a top 5 at their position or a top 15-20 pitcher. I would not put Stroman in the top 15 pitchers in baseball, even this year having a career outlier year. It probably doesn't apply to everyone and I'm no expert on pitching mechanics, but the 6'5"+ guys sound like they get away with worse mechanics because they just have so much leverage in that length. It's difficult to overcome that kind of advantage in a position like that though

    I just can't wrap my head around you labeling Stroman a "Superstar"...

  • @somerandomguy5977
    @somerandomguy5977 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No way an average pitcher is 6'2. When Spencer Strider got called up a bunch of people were saying he's too short to be a starter and he's 6'0. Personally, I believe that if you're a starter and you throw 99-100mph your arm will fall off. Nobody said that of course about Strider, they just talked about his height. No starter throwing that hard lasts other than Nolan Ryan. They don't. Anyways just saying I really doubt that. Btw, Marcus Stroman is a bad and angry person who is known as a clubhouse cancer. I like that he proves that judging pitchers by height is way dumb. But he's a dick. I personally believe judging any baseball player by height is stupid, and we all know scouts do this assuming big and tall players either have pop/can throw hard and that shorter players just can't. Which is dumb. Strength affects strength, not height. Baseball can be so dumb sometimes.

    • @ALittleMessi
      @ALittleMessi ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you doubting the claim by the video, or the stat in general? Because a quick search will lead you to find multiple sources collating data on MLB pitchers to find the average to be 6'2 1/2" with a range from 5'7" to 6'11". Even across every position in the game the greatest distribution of players is 6'2, with 6-6'4" being about one standard deviation. Pitchers are slightly the tallest average of any position as well.

    • @somerandomguy5977
      @somerandomguy5977 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of them doesn't make any sense. Cause 2 inches bekow average shouldn't make you short. So idk, somebody's wrong. It's all dumb anyways. The reason why there are more short lefty pitchers is cause short righties don't even get a chance. It's dumb. Baseball scouts focus way too much on height anyway. Only position where being tall really is a big advantage is first base, otherwise who cares about size as long as they play well.

  • @letigidou8660
    @letigidou8660 ปีที่แล้ว

    MLB pitchers have become watered down almost as bad as basketball players. It's an immense talent pool loss as almost anybody below 6'2'' is fighting an uphill battle. It's a sad symptom of modern sports. The bigger and bigger athletes become the more it exposes these sports as being poorly designed. This would never go with pro leagues but reality is that we would need weight or height classes. Combat sports have long dealt with that problem and as a result many smaller athletes were able to display their talent and become superstars.
    Tennis has also suffered from this as tall guys can have better reach and a better angle over the net. And even hockey, which is not nearly as affected by height has still seen a huge increase in player size. Typical hockey player has become about 6'2'' 220. That's just ridiculous. Smaller guys can still succeed cause it's a violent sport where courage matters a bit more but still, the 5'10'' star players are becoming rare.

That type of body can’t withstand the aggressive pitching motion. Glasnow, DeGrom, Chris sale all lanky pitchers who are always injured or have received tommy John surgery. In my opinion there is a reason tommy John surgery is so prevalent now. And that’s bc teams keep picking those types of pitcher. But like, Stros not that good.... had one good season and mediocre to not great seasons since. This year is a test year with the new pitch clock so we'll have to see how he performs next year and after.

    I hate when those videos just tell me the pounds and inches. I always have to fucking pause the video to translate those figures to a measurement that actually makes sense. Could you just add a simple conversion in the video for the audience in the rest of the world?

    Great story, very good pitcher, but he's not a superstar. He's not even a star.

      Yes superstar might not be true but it’s even more baffling to say he’s not a star

    • @WhatIsNumberOne
      @WhatIsNumberOne ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zachhirschler I guess we have different ideas of stars. 2 all-star game appearances (1 because the team had to have an all-star), 1 top 10 CYA finish (#8), no league lead in any meaningful categories. To me he's a good player, but that doesn't make him a star. This year he is pitching like a star, but for me that's not enough to be labeled a star.
