Getting By - Syndicated Opening Titles

  • Edits of the opening title sequences to Miller/Boyett's Getting By, which show how they would have been shortened for syndication, had the series lasted long enough. Getting By ran on ABC's TGIF lineup (at 9/8c) from March until May of 1993. It then returned in September 1993 on a new network, NBC, where it originally aired on Tuesdays after Saved By the Bell: The College Years; it only lasted one more full season before ending in June 1994. Since two different intros were used for each of its two seasons, a few different arrangements are toyed with.
    First, we have a 27-second version of the first season intro, which in its longest form, was only over 40 seconds (especially short for a Miller/Boyett series during its network run). Second, we have the first season intro with the complete second season theme, which could have been used for the first season episodes in syndication--other shows that have changed their themes within the first four years of their runs often plaster over early themes and visuals with those of the current or later elements (i.e., Family Matters substituting "What A Wonderful World" for "As Days Go By" on its 1989 episodes in syndication). Often, this is because the distributor feels that the later opening better identifies the show's marketability, and so there won't be any confusion of what show they're watching. Finally, we have an edited version of the second season intro with its proper theme.

    It wasn't. In 1992, Miller/Boyett wanted to give Telma Hopkins her own series, with Hopkins wanting to portray a new character, away from the Family Matters universe. At the same time, the two were developing an ABC project titled A New Day, in which a white family adopted a black son. Cindy Williams was slated to star in this. After Tom and Bob had trouble coming up with suitable premise for Hopkins' series, they decided to merge elements of both projects together, resulting in Getting By.

      So what was the case with Miller Boyett wanting to remove her from family matters? Was it because urkel had taken over and she didn’t get much screen time anymore?

    • @VaultMasterDBT
      @VaultMasterDBT  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jwilliams7554 I don't know if Telma had an issue with having decreased screen time because of Urkel, although she did seem to be on less by 1991/92. As I remember reading, she had expressed a desire to be the lead in her own show. So, Miller and Boyett started thinking of ideas for her.

    • @jwilliams7554
      @jwilliams7554 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@VaultMasterDBT I believe she saw what was happening with urkel and had the business mindset to make a deal for another show she would star in before it was too late. By season four, I don’t think she had any storyline, and we never saw Rachel’s place anymore. As someone with experience in show business, she wanted to think ahead while she was still on Family Matters, IMO. My thing was that Getting By aired on the exact same night and network as Family Matters while Telma was still on the show! I’m thinking that must have been some contract deal she made with Miller Boyett and ABC!! But that’s probably why her name was removed from the opening credits during the latter part of the fourth season. But she was still in the show in the season finale episode
      One Friday night, Telma hosted TGIF trivia as her new character Delores, not as aunt Rachel, even though we were more familiar with the latter character. It was quite a confusing time and I always wondered what sparked that move. But too bad Getting By didn’t last long anyway.

    This show looked like it could of went on for a long run if it aired at a different time. This show probably should of aired when after Family Matters went off air. Why Thelma Hopkins didn't return to Family Matters as a regular cast after Getting By got cancelled? And this show should of took in Jaimee Foxworth showing sympathy for her after Family Matters letting her go. Imagine Jamiee portray Dolores niece living with Dolores due to dysfunctional parents and probably that would of drew more viewers attention.

    With three of their successful ABC comedies built on the concept of blended families (Full House, Family Matters and Step By Step), Miller and Boyett were looking to develop a new sitcom for the network in 1992 which would continue this theme. Bickley and Warren, who had created Family Matters and Step By Step, had begun penning a new series concept shortly after the early success of Step. What the producers came up with was the story of a white family that adopted a black son, which looked to be an original 1990s variation of Diff'rent Strokes and Webster.
    The project was titled A New Day, and had Miller and Boyett's former Laverne & Shirley star Cindy Williams cast as the mother. Plans were moving forward on the series for a fall 1992 debut, until a change in direction occurred. Telma Hopkins, who had been co-starring for the past three years as Rachel Crawford on Family Matters, made the decision to leave the series after its third season for her own show. Miller/Boyett were willing to provide Hopkins with her own show, in which the actress would play an entirely new character. In the process of coming up with a concept for Hopkins' series, producers in the end experimented with the idea of adding her into A New Day with Williams, to see how the casting would work. The women clicked as equal leads, and from there the producers decided to revamp the project. The show's premiere was moved up by several months as Miller/Boyett and company tinkered with the format, resulting in the final product known as Getting By. In October 1992, the series was announced on ABC's schedule with its new title and format as a 1992-1993 midseason replacement.
    Merlin Santana and Deon Richmond portrayed preteen rivals for the affections of Keshia Knight Pulliam's character Rudy Huxtable on The Cosby Show. Their interaction on that series was so impressive that they were cast as brothers on Getting By. The two also made two guest appearances on Hangin' with Mr. Cooper in 1995 and 1996, as well as the 2003 movie The Blues, which turned out to be Santana's last film appearance before his death.
    Getting By scored well in the ratings on ABC's TGIF lineup in the spring of 1993, airing at 9/8c (replacing Dinosaurs, which had moved to Sundays). The success was owed in part to its lead-in, Step by Step, the star power of Williams and Hopkins, and Santana as its breakout star. It was also scheduled before a new sitcom airing in the 9:30 TGIF block, Where I Live, which, like Getting By, was marked by a largely black cast. In early May 1993, a few weeks before network upfronts, ABC confirmed that Getting By would be renewed, but would move to Saturday nights in September along with Where I Live. Miller/Boyett and Bickley-Warren were dissatisfied with ABC's plan, as they were certain their show's ratings would severely drop on Saturday nights (ABC had previously damaged the ratings of Miller/Boyett's Perfect Strangers when they moved it to Saturdays for a time in 1992). ABC was not willing to keep the show on TGIF, since they were adding Hangin' With Mr. Cooper and the new Michael Jacobs series Boy Meets World to the Friday lineup. In retaliation, Miller and Boyett pulled Getting By from ABC, promptly getting NBC to pick it up for the fall.
    When its 2nd season premiered on NBC in September, Getting By aired Tuesday nights following the new series Saved by the Bell: The College Years. Disappointing ratings for the College Years (a sequel to NBC's original Saved by the Bell) had an effect on Getting By, whose ratings were now falling from its 1st season ranking on ABC. By mid-season, NBC ended up defeating the purpose of the producers having moved the show from ABC in the first place. Getting By relocated to Saturday nights at 8/7c that January. After only a month of Saturday airings, NBC put the series on hiatus in late February. It did not return until May, where it continued airing in the same Saturday slot, but, concurrent with NBC's fall 1994 network upfronts, the series' return came with the news that Getting By had been cancelled. Four new episodes left over from earlier in the season aired, until the last original episode, "My Brilliant Career", aired on June 18, 1994.

      I always believed had this show stayed on ABC, it would have left Saturday Night and moved to Wednesdays when Thea was canceled in February to rebound the ratings. The ratings would have rebound and it would have stayed on Wednesdays based on programming decisions for a good two to three more seasons. Shows with women leads were doing well for ABC such as Roseanne, Grace Under Fire, Phenom (a popular show but canceled after one season and was in the Top 30. Word had it that ABC suits simply just didn't like the show nor understood it. Addams Family while never a hit but had enough ratings to justify a 3rd season in 1966 had a ABC suit call the show stupid and redundant which killed it off).

It premiered as a mid-season/post mid-season replacement, which had become rare for Miller/Boyett shows (Valerie and Perfect Strangers were the last to have such premieres, both in March 1986), since they normally had September premieres. Many other TGIF 9:30 shows notoriously floundered, and it wasn't until the fall of 1993 that the lineup had a solid 9:30 sitcom in Mr. Cooper. What ABC should have done was renew the show and emphasize Santana.

    I remember this show well, it first aired on friday night after step by step @8:30cst/9:30est. I thought it was a pretty good show. All the characters were likeable, all whith good lines. As the show went on, the funniest one was Merlin Santana's character Marcus. He had gotten quite popular with the audiance to eventually by there scream & cheers as he first entered the screen per episode. I thought the show would last, but ABC cancelled it @ not quite a full season, then NBC had it breifly.

    Your options are either to convert them to recordable DVD, or to buy software with a device that directly copies the VHS feed to your computer. If you want to save money, converting to DVD would probably be the less expensive option.

    Sounds to me the ABC version had more of a pop sound while the NBC version had more of a rap version. Sounded like the switch to the Peacock Network put them on the edge.

      It's not. Step By Step and Getting By were in production at the same time on different sets. The color scheme in the kitchen on Getting By was reminiscent of the "Rachel's Place" set on Family Matters.

      +alison k Lobby networks like Antenna TV / Cozi TV / RTV / MeTV to give these short lived shows a weekend time slot to give them a run through again. Look them up and contact them. These subchannel networks are the only potential to getting them back on the air.
