If we say to you “you alright?” It just means “hi” we don’t actually want to know if you are alright or not
    The correct conversation generally goes
    “You alright?”
    “Yes thanks you?”
    “Not to bad thanks”
You then go about your day and you never stop while having the whole conversation 😂

I've gone to London (from Canada) for Christmas for about 7 years now and Londoners give themselves a very bad rap when it comes to manners and friendliness. I have never felt snubbed or found anyone to be rude. I think it depends on what people consider to be rude. If you ask someone a question and they're in a hurry, they're not being rude if they can't help you. I've had "I'm sorry, I'm running late." a few times they've said "Head in that direction and ask people along the way." I'll also say, the people I notice standing and texting have been the locals. Probably some tourists, too but a lot of the locals. I know it's not me because I have vertigo so I can't look at my phone whilst walking so I put it away.) Regarding stretching across the walkway, this is clearly not applicable to one parent with four or five kids. Everyone I have met there have been so lovely and THEY really appreciate that I really appreciate the city and are always ready with "...have you seen..."

Good advice, all very accurate. Stand on the right on escalators, don't jump the queue, be on time, don't block the middle of a busy pavement......yes, yes, yes and yes. Follow that advice, and you'll have a great time in London. One more thing, London is so cosmopolitan, that no matter how exotic or interesting you think you or your accent are, you won't be exotic or stand out to a Londoner; that can be a bit hard on foreigners who might have hoped this would make them a focus of attention and spark a conversation about them and their plans. Having said all that, London is actually very easy going and there are lots of great things to do and see. You'll have a great time here.

The two fingers swear sign comes from the days of the English fighting the French (plus Scots, Welsh, Spanish etc). The French would capture English archers, and to prevent them from being able to use a bow and arrow ever again they'd chop off their index and middle finger. So the soldiers would stick their two fingers up to the French in battle to say "I've still got my fingers, come at me bro". Edit: Just seen this has been explained a bunch already lol

More annoying than people who stand on the wrong side of the esculators are people who seem to find that exit barriers as they leave the tube come as a complete surprise, and wait until they are just about to reach them to realize that you they need to have their ticket in their hand.....you will see the Locals will all have their tickets in their hands as they approach the barriers, while the tourists will wait until they reach them before they begin searching through their *fanny-packs* in an overdue effort to locate them, and delay the frustrated folk behind them.......on a far more sublime level, we don't like being reminded of the fact that you may be from a country that is wealthier than ours, and can afford to do things we can't, so if you come from somewhere that would consider the taxi fare from Heathrow into town an option (and this applies particularly to the Japanese) then keep that to yourself.

The fingers is very traditional. A lot of people have picked up "the finger" from TV, but when people are actually angry and they react instinctively, it's the fingers, in an aggressive upward wave. I like the story that it dates from the Hundred Years War as a sign of defiance to the French who hated English archers and supposedly liked to cut off the bow fingers, but I don't know if that's true or not. Linguistically, it's the sign for "F--- off" specifically, rather than "F you", or "you shit" or whatever. So it's got that extra bit of fight-starting intent that ".... _off!"_ has.

Don't queues/lines work the same everywhere? i.e. you join at the back. Surely getting pissed off if someone pushes in front when you've been waiting is universal?

    • @herenow6953
      @herenow6953 4 ปีที่แล้ว

EASYTIGER10 In many countries the concept of queueing doesn’t exist. Italy and China spring to mind as places I’ve been - I’m sure there are many other places where they couldn’t give even a mouse sized shit about anyone but themselves. It’s their normal. It’s amazing that they can’t see that order is more effective but there ya have it!

I think the idea of British people being very reserved mainly applies to those over 50. The younger generation are in general much more open and friendly, especially outside central London.

The origins of the v sign come from the battle of Adigingcour where the English Archers would wave the two bow draw fingers at the enemy, who if captured any of the English Archers would cut off those fingers making them inoperative. So over time, this has become a gesture of defiance.

Ok, so I live in the Southeast US and one thing that's very common here is holding the door open for people coming into or leaving a building. On a scale of 1 to 10, how bad would it be if I held the door open for someone? Like if I stopped to hold the door open, would the person behind me think: "This is it. This is how I get pickpocketed in London."? I'm concerned I'll hold the door open out of habit and it'll just lead to a really awkward situation.

I have been in London for over ten years now. It is not as unfriendly as it seems. West Minster is not overly friendly becuse it is all tourists or people just going to work. The surrounding boroughs are fine. People in a cafe or pub will chat. Just keep the topic general and away from personal questions about family, work etc.

In America in most big cities you stand on the right and leave the left free on the escalator especially going to metro. You will get sighs, annoyed excuse me, or shoved if you stand on the left.
Not all Americans love small chat. We are friendly if I'm on metro I don't want to talk to anyone just be in my own space.
