I did that once during my first year of getting my driver’s license. I did a lot of the forward-backward and moved inch by inch just to fit into a tiny spot on the street. @@murray821 Well, a smaller car would fit into a smaller space, but the same principle would still apply 😅. In my country, a small scratch caused by undesired incident will end up with serious quarrel and/or sue. In France, it seems that drivers do not complain if their car get hit as a result of this parking action, because they have understood each other or became accustomed to doing this parking.
Bumpers are there for bumping. If someone need a decoration instead of a bumper he should stay away from cities or crowded places Its just a tool for transportation and a small and little scratch at bumpers doesnt make any real difference for its use. I know a lot will disagree, but i think its better not to be attached too much to an item. At least not when we talk about little scratches.
Reminds me of parallel parking in Colombia. Add the mountains, parking at a slope, using a stick-shift car. Now that I live in the US, I don't know how I ever drove in Colombia lol, and somehow here in the US people have the biggest gaps in front of them, on plain field, no mountains (where I live), and automatic cars with rear cameras and still struggle.
There was a time when a car’s bumpers were used for this purpose of parking. They had Metal bumpers, the modern type plastic painted bumpers are not great when touching other cars 🚗 🚗 during reversing.
I lived in Paris and worked as a sales rep for 20 years. This very parking technique and satisfying result was my daily routine. Having said that, not all Parisian drivers possess the necessary skill. As to bumping, French people also do not like it. You do it when the other car’s driver is not present and you do your best to bump as gently as possible with the intent to leave no scratch on both bumpers (yours and his).
What makes me feel impressed is the fact that the driver could calculate perfectly that his/her car would fit in the spot. I'm good at manouvering but I suck when it comes to calculate with a simple glance whether my car would fit or not , that's why I give up many times spots where my co-driver says that the car could fit.

This is the same level of parking as mum’s doing the school drop off in London. You don’t have the luxury of “finding a bigger/another space “. Traffic is putting pressure on you, and your child could be late for school. My French friends do often nudge or shunt other cars though…the Brits don’t. But excellent parking. Americans don’t have the level of driving instructions like the Europeans. Not even half the lessons and the stands a learner needs to qualify is very low by comparison My cousin is a racing car champion in USA and he’s been trying to change this in America, to reduce road deaths. Andy Pilgrim if you want to check him out. He’s British and moved to USA in his 20’s.
My first time trying parallel parking, it tooks me 10 minutes and I had a space about 1 meter in front and behind my car to the next car parked. This guy pull it off in just 2 minutes with very little space between the cars, so awesome.
Driving instructors in Paris will make you parallel park for hours on end, and they won't let you take your practical test until you can do it perfectly 😅
I used to do this all the time in Manhattan in the early 1990s. The problem was, if you left your car for a couple of days, the cars that had been in front of and behind you would have been replaced with two different cars which now were literally touching your bumpers. You would have to rock each car up on its suspension in order to escape your space.
@@pmrdc117 Yes it's a long car in France because of our roads but compare to yours and your roads it's nothing, i just do a comparison between France and USA if you're an american
Yes, only the rich and dumb drive 5 meters cars in Paris. They are also usually alone behind the steering wheel... It should be forbidden in any big city.
I was in France a few years back and watched a similar parking incident. This driver was less concerned with bumping, and simply pushed the car behind out of the way. The next car along ended up being shoved out into a junction. Madness, but fun to watch while sitting in the sun outside a cafe.
Yeah it s very Common to push cars in paris but you don’t bump them it’s ok and there is protection on both cars like we french think it was made to puch cars gently
I don't think nowadays you can shove a car like that (move its wheels) without denting the plastic bumpers. On the other hand you can usually squish them a little and have them come back...
But key word is that the video title is _French_ parking and not _Parisian_ parking. In Paris people leave their cars in neutral so people can push the cars out of the way when parking on the street. They just reverse until they hear a loud sound and they’re parked. Pull this stunt in any other part of France and people will get really angry.
This video is 10 years old lol. Wonder how much more insane it is now. But I bet it's just his eye being able to judge the distance to millimeter...or that's probably part of it. Probably that it's Paris and no available reasonable parking so he just forced it in. Kimdof like Stallone on cobra. Would've been great someone ripping someone's shirt and telling them to go clean themselves up. It is Paris after all
He literally couldn’t though you can see him constantly bumping into the other cars. I’m sure there’s not any noticeable damage maybe a scuff mark but still
I was in Paris years ago and saw this many times. It seemed that when the cars were parked on level ground they were left in neutral gear and without parking brake. That way they could be gently pushed by the cars entering or exiting the parking spot. The parked cars could not go far because there was always a car parked close either in front or rear.
Тоже слышал, что в Европе оставляют машины на нейтральной передаче, чтобы специально их толкали в случае чего Я был в шоке, что всем плевать на повреждения машины!
No you do put the parking brake to prevent the car from rolling on its own, you just don't want to crank it too hard so the car will still move if pushed hard enough.
We do something similar in my country when there's no free parking space an a car would block someone else. The car is left with the parking brake disengaged, but others will push the car by hand if needed, which prevents causing damage.
@@Quint_69 Damn, you are one annoying dude, you replied all of them with the same sentence. I agree with you, this was not as professional as they say, but get a life man.
I did this for 8 years, but in Germany, having been searching for a parking spot for at least 30 minutes every time... In many european cities, this is the only way to find a space where you won't get fined or towed. It was my daily routine.
I’m so impressed that driver knows exactly, EXACTLY how big their car is down to the centimeter and how far forward or back they can go. I’ll be a few feet away from a car and feel like I’m as close as I can get.
Good drivers have developed their spatial sense enough to know where the edges of their car are. It may look like voodoo but it's really no different from being able to touch your toes with your eyes closed.
@BL Dontmatter ofc they'll all have their parking brake engaged. With clutch you lower the torque transmitted to the wheels so when u touch another car it's like a human hand pressing on the body of the car, you can't do that with an automatic cause even if u gently press the gas pedal lots of torque are put onto the wheels which will damage the car paint. Plus clutch pedals are very long and you can be very precise by using both pedals at the same time.
I can confirm that the French do not argue about minor damage on cars. A then brand-new Citroen C6 cut my lane and I noticed too late and hit it. A Gitanes-smoking man in an expensive suit got out, totally relaxed, we looked at the scratches and dents and he said "Euh, c est rien monsieur, la voiture est encore en marche", shrugged, and got back in.
"Uh, it is nothing sir, the car is still running" What a great story. I wish we could be more relaxed like that. Too many people here are in such a hurry to try and make a buck on something like that. Quick to file a claim or sue.
I used to live in a narrow lane in Edinburgh and my parking skills back then were on this level.😂 I once got a round of applause from a bunch of men watching me get into a tight spot in Spain. They tried to stop me saying there wasn’t enough room. I got out, had a look, rolled my eyes and parked. 😊
You can find this kind of parking anywhere in southern European cities. It's really insane. Can you imagine trying to fit through European streets and parking spots with an unnecessarily large American truck?
I am sure the driver also took into consideration the space the front and rear cars had in relation to his position, during his quick calculation. The front car had ample space in front to leave while the rear car had enough space on the back to get out without trouble. Great job.
That's why I bought 100% insurance coverage to a rened car on my trip to France. Otherwise I would have paid 1200 Euro for scatches done by such a parking "professionals".
@@username8644 I'm from Paris and having a scratch on the bumpers isn't normal at all lol, but it happens that we touch each other bumpers but it usually leaves no scratches, and it is only in Paris that there is a lack of space, everywhere else in France you have all the space you need
How do you judge the distance in front and behind? I've just gotten into driving and feel like I'm always further than I think or I hit the back? Any tips?
As a French person, what amazes me the most are the comments of people who seem to think this is amazing.. This was kind of normal, and he didn't even have to take traffic into account. Usually you have to hurry because other drivers are stressing you out.
Many other videos only show how to get out of that space, not how to park. What I want to see is how to park, not how to exit from that tight space. Thanks for posting this, because this shows the parking process from the beginning. I see the initial step is quite similar to the one used for normal space parking. The difference is in the remaining steps which rely on driver's skill.
The initial step is still I think the most important - notice the silver guy had to drive out of the space and make a seccond attempt? - because if you get the car in at a wrong angle, you will have to make a billion corrections, and if you reverse into the space at just the right angle, the rest is relatively straightforward - just back up steering closer to the pavement, then turn the wheel and do the same thing driving forwards, et cetera; not easy if you don’t want to hit or wreck (God forbid if you have a towbar) other cars but the manoeuvres themselves are pretty simple. The burning question is: did he have rear parking sensors? 🤔
Something else to take in account is the radius turn (I'm not sure if that is the correct name)... Research by yourself, sorry but my first language isn't English...
@@backseatcovers The key is to get you rear wheels into the right position, ie, between the curb and the line on the street. With very little back and forth space, you cannot really move your rear wheels, you can only rotate the car around roughly your rear differential (or where it would be if the rear wheels were ‘powered’).
Having driven in France I can confirm this is to be expected. I wouldn't say all drivers do it, but you do have to be prepared for it to happen. Some nudge gently, others not so!
You went to Brittany, North or any other places that aren't Paris or Marseille ? because you're the kind of ppl writting comments that seems "fake" to people living in this country
This is masterclass in parking. Very likely French drivers disable their parking sensors because they would constantly go off. In my younger days I spent some time in Nice and people told me not to set the handbrake and leave the car in second gear. This way, if it got bumped a bit too much it would move.
@@samaraisnt neutral does not make sense. If you don't have the parking brake on and the car in neutral it might roll away. First gear is still a lot of resistance to overcome.
My son lives in Seville. Parking in the city is very limited. If you find a roadside space you just “bump” your way in - hitting the bumpers of both the car in front and the one behind - until you’re parallel with the curb. Here in England, I’d have a heart attack if somebody parked next to my car by hitting its bumper repeatedly, but in Seville it’s just normal parking procedure.
As a French living in Edinburgh, I had to park like that once on a first date, it wasn't as tight, but it was still very tight. Let me tell you if you want to impress a man, that's one way 😂
I've been a tourist in paris many many times and park my rental car like this many many times. Sometimes I even impressed myself on how the hell i did manage to fit an espace in a space for a kangoo. Turns out all you need are patience and full steering lock manoeuvres.

How to parallel park in France: Go to any parking space regardless of how big your car or how small the space is and waste some time adjusting your car in the proper position and don’t bother if you are going to hit something.
Many of these drivers have cameras now or at least the beeping sound that indicates the distance between them and objects. They still parallel park extremely well.

Leaving a car in neutral with the parking brake off is common in Thailand in parking lots where if there is room, people will park at right angles directly in front of you So blocking not only you but the cars to the left and right of you as well. It's accepted practice. Even pickup trucks park like that - you just have to push them out of the way. Not always easy because there could be several bumper to bumper, meaning you have to move them all, and not just a few inches or cm, but enough to make a space for your car to pull out.

I drive a 2009 ford focus cc with a dent that I caused myself and I would get physically violent with anyone who touched my bumper while parking 😂
Pero si en sevilla hay aparcamientos de sobra que me estás contando
Bumpers are for bumping anyway. I'm glad India has enough space to not care but if anyone hits my bumper it's kinda whatever

You forgot selfishness too, you need lots of that to damage 2 other cars just so you can get into a space too small for your vehicle.
@@justsayin644 Or you know to touch other cars at near stop, or your car as cameras allowing you to stop millimeters from their bumpers.
@@gengis737 but clearly thats not what they are doing i can see with my own eyes they are stopping because they have hit the car behind or in front
I remember reading a book by my favourite travel author Bill Bryson and he described French drivers as 'parking as though they had spilled a beaker of sulphuric acid in their lap' 😂
What does it mean?

How to parallel park in France:
Go to any parking space regardless of how big your car or how small the space is and waste some time adjusting your car in the proper position and don’t bother if you are going to hit something.
The problem is, it's already difficult enough to find a parking spot in Paris, but if your car is too big you will not park anywhere above ground.
@@jazz96765 so weird how i found parking in the Mandel street(coming of the trocadero) two weekends in a row not even 50m from the square
Я тоже так вечерочком развлекаюсь😂смотрю как народ паркуется с балкончика.
Many of these drivers have cameras now or at least the beeping sound that indicates the distance between them and objects. They still parallel park extremely well.
From the Uk, I drove in Paris once or twice, two things made me as happy as going up La Tour with my daughter, driving round the L’arc de Triomphe twice, and parking on a street like that, it made my trip, I felt fully Parisian. The Parisians must get through a lot of tyres!

Five years driving here and I still avoid the Arc de Triomphe!! I must get my courage up and do it one of these days...
@@birchlover3377 Is the rumour I've heard true, that no French car insurance companies pay out for accidents at L'arc? I was surprised by the lack of horns and driver patience.
@@the_grand_tourer I haven't heard that, only that driving instructors are banned from taking driving students there. I'll have to ask about insurance.

When i was in Paris 30 years ago the handbrakes were left off apart from the end cars and they just got gently shunted out of the way by the new arrival. Things have moved on. That was seriously impressive.
No, we still do that :)
My Argentinean friend says the same in his country. Except for the "gently" part.
I actual just did a similar one in Caen, France, when travelled there back in October! We rented a car to go around Normandy and to the south, and it was a fight to get parking spaces in Caen and one night I found ine near our AirBnb and it was tight squeeze for parallel park and plus the pressure of traffic from both ways! I was proud of myself after that!

Unbelievable skills.. while in many countries people don’t even could drive with civic sense, parking with patience and precisely is an art!
Is it considered precise ifthe driver is literally colliding with the vehicles in front of and behind him in order to park? That's the opposite of precise. Imagine a child coloring outside of the lines and calling it precise

I used to waste more than an hour every morning looking for a parking spot before work
I lived in Brussels for a while and I was impressed how close to each other they parked. But this one is really amazing
I’m impressed. The driver may not be a safe driver but he’s surely a prefect parker.
